Summer bulbs confusion

I received a delivery of Dahlia plants last week, ordered them last November but had forgotten there would be a bag of 200 Summer Bulbs in the parcel.

Within the bulbs pack are 40 x Allium Moly, no use to me as they proved to be a bit ‘thuggish’ in my garden years ago. I shall offer them on Freecycle site.

I am surprised to find 40 x Anemone Blanda Mixed as I thought they flowered about now through to April, therefore not a Summer bulb!

I noticed many Anemones flowering away beneath a little weeping tree in my son’s front garden a couple of days ago and really am not sure when, or even if, to plant them.

Any advice welcome please.

Thanks for looking in.

they are better off planted now and may leaf up/flower slightly later. but if you don't get planted then they will dry out too much to be viable next year.

the term bulbs is often used as a catch all for bulbs/corms/tubers etc.

They are tubers Julia, 3 packs of them and each pack had up to 4 very healthy looking tubers so I am pleased with them. Red, yellow and orange, not my usual choice of colours but a change is as good as a rest!

Thanks Sbg, I shall get the Anemones in the ground tomorrow, weather permitting.

My anemone blanda are flowering now. But look at it this way - if you don't plant them you have no chance anyway so bung them in and keep your fingers crossed.

Will do!!

You could always put them in a pot Shirley and then transplant them later incase you forget where they are!

That's true Rose ... the 40 Anemone were planted this morning ... in a chipped bark covered area that won't be dug over any time soon so they should be safe!

Well, all I can say is, I look forward to seeing your anemone in bloom! They will look just delightful en masse, Shirley.

Hmm, we shall have to wait and see!

Anemone Blanda are one of the prettiest spring flowers, and come back year after year ... and spread a little. My whites and blues have been in flower for nearly two weeks 🙂. Glad yours are in a safe place!

Sheila, I agree with you as our son has some flowering away under a small weeping tree in the front garden. He said they were there when he bought the house and calls it his little woodland!

How lovely to have your son nearby and enjoying his garden Shirley 🙂.

So true Sheila, he's only about 4 miles away from us and popped round to bring flowers and a card on Saturday. Just a shame he and little Ellora stood on the pavement to talk with us standing at the front door ... roll on end of Lockdown restrictions.

I love anenome blanda, only place they will grow is in the bed at the back of the fishpond, saying that others say they will spread but mine never do,...I've found bulbs hidden away in the past that I've forgotten about, if they are still firm I always just pop them in the ground somewhere no matter what time of the year it is, I figure they stand more chance in the garden than left in my hidey holes Shirley x

So true Lincs ... I have some dwarf Iris that have finished flowering now, so do I move them from pots and a stone trough to the garden, or store them somehow? Never grown them here before ...
