Strolling on New Years Day 2022
20 comments
The Christmas decorations are packed away for another year, the glitter and sparkle no longer glistens on the carpets and floors, must be time for the first walk of the year!
There were many folk doing the same, alongside the river Arun in Littlehampton, which flows out to the English Channel and was particularly high water this morning.
We had bought take-out coffees, using our new coffee mugs, thoughtful gifts from our daughter, then parked up to drink them in the car before taking a gentle stroll in the unseasonably warm weather.
Here is what we viewed . . . come along for a seaside walk.
The river flows out to sea with the sand dune beach of West Beach on one side, the shingle and sand beach to the East. West Beach is accessed by road, with a ferry crossing across the river in the Summer months, saving the drive if you have parked on the East side.
The water level was very high.
Much of the riverbank has been developed over the years with apartments, in place of the boat building yards. A shame in one respect, but probably a good sign of re-generation for Littlehampton.
On our walk back to the car we saw these motor scooter
riders (born again Mods?!!) who had driven from Brighton along the coast road to Littlehampton. OH had a chat with one of the riders, shared his memories with him!
The buildings in the background are part of Harbour Park, the amusements park owned by Gary Smart, member of the well known Smarts Circus family with the water slide to the right. Just the indoor venue open today.
I hope you enjoyed the first walk of 2022 with us. All that remains to say is …

Looks breezy, but so unseasonally warm along the South Coast. Happy New Year.

Thank you all for your comments - it was so mild that I didn't bother with gloves or a scarf - amazing for 1st January! Forecast is for cooler temps. at the end of the week.

Lovely seaside scenes here Shirley. Lots of people out and about enjoying it.
I put the decorations away today too and had a real sort out which took quite a while. The tree has been really lovely this year and hardly dropped a needle and I did feel sad to see it disappear!!! This is unusual for me as I am always more than ready to get back to normal!!

Thanks for the walk Shirley! I love looking at the sea.
We go down to our sea front most days, but usually to our regular cafe for home made soup.
But New Years Eve, we had such a job to get parked as everyone was out walking! It seemed busier than a summers day!
Happy New Year to you both!

Loved reading your blog, Shirley. Nothing beats a New Year's day walk in the fresh air...lots of fresh sea air too!
Hope you felt energised afterwards! 😊

Julia, many years ago we walked across to St. Michaels Mount and climbed to the top. Pretty sure I couldn't do it these days . . . :o(
Chris, there was definitely less to put back up in the loft as I gave some decs.to our daughter before Christmas! She had 'inherited' the model village buildings as I just couldn't be doing with setting it all out this year!
Rose, I think many folk were determined to get out in the fresh air, mainly because it wasn't bitterly cold or raining heavily! This morning I spent almost an hour in the garden, removed old Hellebore leaves and cut down some spent Sedum stems as they were flopping over. My gardening withdrawal symptoms are all gone now ... :o))
Thanks for looking in Kate ... it was a brilliant start to the new year!

Thank you for sharing your seaside walk with us. Much appreciated. I have quite a lot of memories of Littlehampton. You are quick in taking down your Christmas decks, not Jan 6th yet,
but I guess you want rid of them :-). Have you taken the cards down also?
Happy New Year to you both.

How lucky you are, Shirley, to have close access to the sea! I've enjoyed the stroll. OH was taken back by your photos of the riders. He had a Lambretta Ld 150 (1958 vintage) when he was a teenager, so it made him quite nostalgic! Thanks for posting.

Josie, I never leave the Christmas tree and decs. out for the twelve days of Christmas! Cards are in a box for me to re-read and possibly answer to . . . :o)
Anget, I was actually in two minds as to whether to include the scooter photos, so I'm pleased I did and brought back some memories for your OH.

Nice to see then sea! Too far here to nip down to the beach! It was quite a mild day here as well.

The scooters brought back memories for me too …I had a Lanbretta in 1958 as a teenager. I failed the driving test but still went for burn-ups - I loved driving fast! (Don’t worry, there wasn’t much traffic in those days :))
