You lose some, you gain some!

You may remember that there was a prostrate Juniper at the top of the stream bank. It died last year, and we had to remove it.

It left an enormous space – I dug in four barrowloads of compost!

After all the hard work preparing the area, I enjoyed planning the colour scheme, getting the plants and I didn’t miss the Juniper at all!

This was what it looked like when it was all planted up.

Unfortunately, the Clematis growing from the bottom of the bank – ‘Gipsy Queen’ has not reappeared this year. You can see it in the first photo. I shall miss it badly.

Also in that photo, to the left, the pale blue flowers belong to a herbaceous Clematis called C. jouiniana. It grows huge every year, and tends to swamp all the other plants on the lower bank. It’s quite pretty, I suppose.

Maybe I should say ‘was’ quite pretty, because I decided it had to go. I managed to cut all the top growth back – it filled our trailer! Then my husband took over, and his comment was that there seemed to be a tree trunk in the space. It was the rootball of the Clematis, and when he finally removed it with his pickaxe, it was far too heavy for me to lift – just enormous!

So I had another space to fill. Looking out of the window, I could see that the patch of Salvia ‘Caradonna’ loked great, but it needed another patch of purple in the space. I found some Salvia plants, but they didn’t fill the space, so it left an area for something else. I decided to plant two Ligularia dentata ‘Desdemona’ here. If you’re familiar with this plant, you’ll know that it enjoys damp soil, so a stream bank is ideal.

Even before they come into bloom later in the season, the leaves are beautiful.

So this is where I’m up to now. The roses, Heucheras and Salvias are all in flower, and the Achillea ‘Terracotta’ plants are all budding up nicely. The additional rose I planted last autumn is in flower.

Rosa ‘Easy Does it’

And this is a view of the area now. You can see how much everything has grown! Geranium ‘Rozanne’ is just beginning to flower – but I do miss ‘Gipsy Queen’.

My husband dug two extra holes for me – I’m hoping to track down two Clematis, one, of course a new ‘Gipsy Queen’, and a new one called ‘Black Tea’. It’s supposed to flower from May, so I hope to extend the flowering season with the two Clems.

You lose some, you gain some – well, that’s the plan!

Naturally, Henry had to supervise the work.

Great blog, Spritz, a welcome relief frankly, and good to know that you yourself must be improving week by week. It all looks fab, as always. Its amazing how much space those prostrate junipers take up. I love that orange rose, stunning colour - any fragrance?
Is it possible the Gypsy Queen will pop up next year, or did you take the roots out?

lovely to read your blog Barbara and nice that you are back into the gardening, hope your not doing to much though, i love the streambank and wish it was mine, so nice to see Henry to, hope he is doing well now :o))

That is gorgeous. I do hope you manage to source your clematis. Henry is looking very keen to be the assistant!!

Oh it does look so much better without the Juniper, some lovely planting, I am sure you will find another Clem online, so pleased we did not buy Jouiniana, we were told it was a beauty....

Gorgeous, looks so different from when first planted up x

I can only echo all the compliments already written. I have known clematis to disappear for a year and then pop up again so I hope Gypsy Quen is only on holiday and will return.

looks lovely spritz! im not surprised you miss the gipsy queen its lovely, aswell as that amazing coloured rose! :-)

Spritz, you may well have answered two questions for me. We have a beautiful clematis which grows up through the roses on our trellis, but I have no idea what it is. It looks remarkably like your "Gypsy Queen", and a mystery rose growing at the back of our main border is a dead ringer for your picture "Easy does it". Thank you for that. I shall pretend I knew all along!

I'm pleased that you all approve! I was a bit fustrated that I couldn't do it myself, but OH was very patient (on the whole!) when I kept saying that the plants needed to be further over...lol...

Bamboo, I didn't go near the area where 'Gipsy Queen's' roots are, so maybe she will decide to honour us with her presence next year. I was very puzzled when she didn't. All the 'new' roses are fragrant by the way, and flower continually until autumn, too. I did my research, you see! :-)))

Gattina, my beautiful Clem. usually produces a flower or two about now, but most appear a bit later, and go on until autumn. I MUST have another one!

Maybe it's the climate, or maybe mine isn't Gypsy Queen after all - she has been in full, ebullient and glorious flower for nearly a month now. Darn it! I shall have to think again!
I've just been out into the garden to remind myself, and maybe mine is more magenta than the true purple/blue of yours. Oh Dear! back to the drawing board!

22 Jun, 2012

Why not post a photo and a question? I expect someone will ID it for you. :-)

22 Jun, 2012

I'm afraid I don't visit the questions page any more, Spritz.

22 Jun, 2012

lovely to see the changes and developing scenery. does the stream give any trouble in heavy rain?

22 Jun, 2012

I knew you'd have done your research, Spritz, didn't question that for a second... I really like that orange rose, I just might have to get one - and given I'm not a rose lover, that's amazing to me, lol!

Its so nice to see that you are now able to work in your garden ,but please dont over do it!
I love your new rose Easy does it! [take Heed] and all the planting in the old area, is that Lysmachia in flower that I can see in the top left of the picture, I am waiting for mine to start flowering as it seems to bring the garden to life and makes a nice backdrop! well done Barbara and I do hope your clematis comes back for you ;0)

22 Jun, 2012

Thanks, all. Yes, although Lysimachia is a bit of a thug, it's controllable, and I like it there.
Well, Bamboo, I'm really pleased you like that particular rose! :-)

Fran, yes indeed. The lowest part of our garden does get flooded, but as I grow Gunnera there, I think it enjoys it!

The stream runs along the side of the lane when it goes out of the garden, and the ford gets so deep and 'angry' looking, no ordinary cars would want to cross it.

Really enjoyed your blog B as usual. I know how you feel about Gypsy Queen, but sadly that seems to be 'life with clems' doesn't it. I've only seen some of my large flowered ones once...it's so sad. Still, we keep trying because they are so beautiful! I'm off to look up 'Black Tea', never heard of that one! Love the photo of Henry and that one of the gorgeous orangey rose 'Easy does it'...beautiful!

23 Jun, 2012

Look on the Taylor's website, K. That's where I found it, and they exhibit at the RHS shows - so one will be waiting for me at Hampton Court! :-))

23 Jun, 2012

Yes, that is exactly where I would have looked had I got around to it B! :D Taylors are great!

23 Jun, 2012

I'm glad you said that, K. :-)))

I got the 'last' plants to go in the gaps yesterday - two Ligularia przewalskii (what a name!!) and two Helenium 'Sahin's Early Flowerer' to replace the ones that seem to have vanished since last year - snails again?

24 Jun, 2012

Yes, I think so. Lots of slug damage on mine this year as well...good to know that we are feeding the mollusc population so effectively...what with the clematis and the heleniums! I looked up Black Tea and it looks quite a lot like vit. Black Prince, which I have in one of my Birches. That's another stunning dark one if you ever need another one! I was just saying to OH...it is really strange because it feels so like autumn to me, yet it is not yet the end of June. There is still so much to come in my garden and yet I can't quite believe it is going to happen at all this year...feels like frosts will be happening any time now...but they 'won't' of course......will they? lol ;)

24 Jun, 2012

They'd better not, K! :-(((

I did more on the bank yesterday - the two Ligs and Heleniums are in, and I found a strand from 'Gypsy Queen' - so she isn't quite dead. :-) Maybe if I feed her it might help, do you think?

25 Jun, 2012

got to be worth a try, but it may take a couple of years before she gets going again.

25 Jun, 2012

I can quite understand why you don't miss the prostrate Juniper! The bed you have made in its place is great! Like others I love the orange rose "Take it Easy"!

Ditto for your own health as well!

25 Jun, 2012

Thanks - I'm so pleased that you all like my new-look stream bank. :-))) I admit to loving it myself. I hope that's not boasting. <blush>.

I should NOT have planted the last four plants, but I was impatient as usual. Luckily, I didn't suffer any ill effects afterwards. ;-)

26 Jun, 2012

Lovely new border - something new for you to enjoy!

27 Jun, 2012

And I do, Anne. I can see it from my bedroom window seat - so I sit up there in the morning and look down at the colours. :-)))

It'll be lovely when the Achilleas start flowering. I've got one gripe - I bought a Gaillardia which was supposed to be 'Burgundy', but it's yellow with scarlet centres.:-( I think I might have to remove it!
