GOING UP THE WALL

Not me – not this time, anyway! No – this was another of those lovely surprises that happen in gardens sometimes. You know – when you find that a flower has opened for the first time, or a plant sends up a shoot – that kind of thing that is so exciting to a gardener.
It all starts here – my Clematis cirrhosa ‘Lansdowne Gem’. Here are the nice sturdy stems down at the base of the trellised arch that leads from the front garden to the side.
Here it is, doing what it should – climbing over the top of the arch.
There are lovely deep maroon flowers hanging down at this time of year, for anyone who passes underneath to admire.
The flowers are blooming right to the other side of the arch. Lovely!
But what’s it doing now? It appears to have decided to climb off the arch at the other side!
And clamber up the Clematis montana stems up the house wall…
Further up, clinging to the climbing rose as it goes…
Buds still to open right up at the guttering – where a single brave rose is still in flower!
And until I looked upwards as I went towards the arch, I had no idea that this beautiful Clematis had taken off up the house wall – what a lovely, lovely surprise.

How wonderful isn`t it just heart lifting when you see something that you`ve planted take off like this. Good one Barbara.

Lovely colour Spritz :0))

Thanks - I'm surprised that a C. cirrhosa has turned out to be so vigorous - so it can clamber to its heart's content! :-))

That is absolutely stunning, Spritz - nature is truly amazing. I am rather worried about my clematis montana. I planted it late spring (no flowers when I bought it) and it romped away along the fence. Now, after the snow and heavy frosts, it's looking very sorry for itself and all the lower part is bare. Will it revive in the spring?

its lovely barbara and amazing how its grown all the way up like that :o)

I would want to encourage it to climb even more! How wonderful for you!

Gee - Yes, I'm sure it will be fine - after all, they do lose their leaves, but they are hardy. Don't worry!
Thanks, Cat and Sandra -
I'm thrilled to bits at finding all those flowers today - usually I'm looking down at the flowers on Vinca 'Jenny Pym' which is at the base of the arch. Now I shall have to look up and down at the same time! LOL.

What a great clematis Spritz. There certainly are some good ones and this is obviously one of them!
4 Jan, 2010
Well, Sbg - I have been walking Henry every day bar the first two, so I've been out in the fresh air twice today! It was soooooo cold today, though - it stayed at 0 degrees all day! I've been well-wrapped up, as you can imagine.
Yes, Paul - it's my favourite out of the three C. cirrhosas I have!

A very lovely blog Spritz and a nice surprise for you as well. One question though! How do you look up and down at the same time? I tried it and now my eyes hurt! ! !
4 Jan, 2010
I'm glad you enyoyed seeing it, Simbad. This one is the least common - 'Freckles' and 'Wisley Cream' seem to be more freely available. Good luck with your search. :-))
4 Jan, 2010
It was indeed, Toto! :-)))
Ian - have you been at the juice again? Tsk, tsk.
It's easy - one eye up - the other down - why do you think we've got two eyes? LOL.

5 Jan, 2010
Another winter beauty that wouldn't survive in my garden - I'm envious, Spritz.
5 Jan, 2010
Why not, Wagger? Have you tried a C. cirrhosa before?
5 Jan, 2010
This is not the first year we've had -13degrees, Spritz. Is it snowing there yet? It is here so it's warmed up a bit now.
5 Jan, 2010
It is a lovely clematis purple is one of my favourite colours.
5 Jan, 2010
It's more of a deep maroon, Mavis - but just as beautiful as purple!
Yes, Wagger - it started at about 7 o'clock, but it's stopped again now. Lots forecast for tonight, though!
I'm sending you a PM....
5 Jan, 2010
I wouldn't be without this clematis, it's such a lovely sight when everything else is sleeping :)))))
6 Jan, 2010
I agree 100%, Grindle! Have you got lots of the white stuff this morning?
6 Jan, 2010
I love all the range of the purple maroon lilacs etc hence one of my reasons for perennial geranims being one of my favourite plants.I had a really nice Campanula called Rubriflora which is a dark maroon it didnt survive so I am keeping an eye out for it ,also I want to grow some love lies bleeding again.

sorry Spritz missed this, yes we're stuck in the village, we've had no buses, the train couldn't run, and the couple of shops we have were running out of the necessities, we are going to try and get to Tavistock this morning to get some shopping before it comes back again at the weekend :(((((
8 Jan, 2010
Our lovely farmer put a plough on his tractor and cleared the lane - so we got our shopping done yesterday. :-)) Good luck with yours!
8 Jan, 2010
well the bus is running again at the moment, OH won't take the car, our road is still thick, and by the look of it, we don't have much chance on getting back to normal just yet, plenty more snow forcast for the next couple of days, but I did manage to get my parafin for the greenhouse, (that was most important LOL)
9 Jan, 2010
We have to get our priorities right, don't we! Yes, I'm afraid we've all got more to come on Sunday some time - not sure when. Nasty! :-(((
9 Jan, 2010
It look lovely spritz
is your garden in the yellow book?
10 Jan, 2010
Thank you - yes, last year was the first time it opened for the NGS. You can blame Grenville and Alan for that - they came down to visit and gave me a 'nudge' or three! :-)))))
10 Jan, 2010
Was it succesful and did you get alot of people?
I can imagine that being a little stressful until the visitors arrived!
10 Jan, 2010
Oh yes - I worked SOOOOO hard getting it looking good! We had over 150 people over the two aftenoons, so that was wonderful. Lots of compliments - and we got a visitors' book in between when we realised that the NGS one wasn't for comments.
Now - if you're bored, I wrote a blog, so did David, and Louise! All back in June last year. So you'll get a sense of the garden through different eyes.
In all, I met 7 GOYers...how good was that!

Lovely Barbara. It's a very rich colour. Are you going to let it roam or cut it back ?
