The challenge of UPDRAFTS ...

In winter, the garden birds convene in the birch tree.

… the more you look, the more birds you can see …

……………………………………………………………………..

Sometimes, the best landing-place is at the very top …

……………………………………………………………………..

The sparrows prefer to cluster on the climbing roses …

……………………………………………………………………..

On sunny days, the birch gleams … stunning silver …

……………………………………………………………………..

… but on chilly mornings the tree reflects glints of gold …

……………………………………………………………………..

After bath-time, the starlings perch aloft, for preening …

……………………………………………………………………..

… their chest feathers glisten, like sparkling diamonds …

……………………………………………………………………..

My friend the robin can be heard before he’s seen.

……………………………………………………………………..

… but he’s up there, beak open as usual for maximum volume !

……………………………………………………………………..

However, when he’s down in the conifer, the robin produces different sounds … territorial warning clucks …

……………………………………………………………………..

During the current blustery weather, the smaller birds choose to hide in trees which have multiple branches …

……………………………………………………………………..

The wind blows Conker’s long hair all over the place … his ears get cold !

…………………………………………………………………….

Knitted bonnet to the rescue …

…………………………………………………………………….

The robin isn’t sure about Conker’s new head-gear …
… so, for once, he keeps his beak closed …
… reserving judgement … saving his opinion for later …

…………………………………………………………………….

A sudden gale, and Truffle’s ears are sent sky high …
… almost ready for lift off !

……………………………………………………………………..

Another blue hat resolves the crisis …
… keeping Truffle’s feet firmly on the ground !

……………………………………………………………………..

No such woollen garments for the robin …
… look at his wind-blown ‘mohican’ hair-do !

……………………………………………………………………..

A few lucky creatures are warm and cosy, away from the storms …

Stay safe everyone !

Hi Linda .. blue hats .. the only way to keep your feet on the ground ;o)

15 Jan, 2015

I think Robin needs a blue hat - although he does seem to be laughing at Truffle and Conker in that wind-blown photo! Lovely photos and blog as usual, TT, really cheering - just what I needed, bless you :)

15 Jan, 2015

You know how I love your tree and robin pics and the best one to day is the robin with the mohican - have you ever seen such a joyful looking bird? You really do get some amazing shots. The one of Conker with his ears on end is marvellous too! A lovely blog.

Jane if you look at Terra's page (click on her avatar) you'll see more beautiful photos of her lovely boys

Great pics Terra. The birds have had to battle the wind this week. How do they do it!

16 Jan, 2015

Thanks Hywel, Fran, Stera, Jane, Neena, Pam, Sandra ...

The tree branches were swaying about, making photography quite difficult ... in fact sometimes the wind was almost blowing me off my feet too !

16 Jan, 2015

A super blog as usual TT great pictures with clever captions. I love the blue bonnets. Did you make them yourself? It's been very windy here too, but managed to get out into the garden yesterday and enjoy the sunny spells.

16 Jan, 2015

Thank you Waddy ...
I'm glad you were able to get out in your garden ...

yes.. I did knit the bonnets ... I hadn't done knitting since I was quite young ... a gap of about 3 decades ! But I seem to be remembering how to do it ...

I made up the design of the bonnets as I went along ... Lol.

16 Jan, 2015

Oh aren't you clever? Any knitting I do ends up looking dreadful, I stick to dolly clothes these days they don't seem to mind lol!

16 Jan, 2015

Thanks ... when I started knitting the hats, I thought my dogs wouldn't mind if not a perfect design ... Lol.

I'm now trying to knit a dog coat, but I've had to enlarge the pattern instructions .. and make lots of pencil notes ... so that I can see it clearly !

16 Jan, 2015

Very nature photos, sky is clear and brilliant pictures of Conker , Truffles n' Crocus very happy and i really appreciate seeing them, esp. the hat you have made its very beautiful, Terra :-)))

16 Jan, 2015

16 Jan, 2015

Hi Paul ...
thanks .. the robin was very obliging, singing loudly to let me know where to point the camera !
Conker and Truffle love to dress up ... they elbow each other out of the way to be the first to try on any garment !

Lovely clear photos TT I'm sure Truffle & Conker were more than pleased with your knitted hats to keep them nice & warm :o)

16 Jan, 2015

Thanks Amy ...
that hats kept Truffle and Conker warm ...
... and presumably prevented Truffle from becoming airborne ;o)

16 Jan, 2015

Great blog and photo's Terra, I think we were all in need of bonnets this past week , I've never had so many twigs and small branches spread over my bottom lawn, so my Willow tree is back on my most "disliked and must remove list" lol..
Love the pics of Conker and Truffle, they look so snug in their hats and you have some great shots of your robin, my road has a roundabout on it and there are a couple of the silver birch trees growing on it, I always think they look amazing in the winter months, especially if like yours its against a blue sky...

16 Jan, 2015

Hi Sue ..
many thanks ... seems to me that Brynner would benefit from a nice knitted bonnet ? Which colour for him ? Pale orange ? ... or purple ? ;o)

The recent wild winds brought down small branches and twigs from most trees, didn't they ... I don't mind that ... as long as the fences don't blow over !

16 Jan, 2015

Lncs, much sympathy over your willow.
We had a large one several houses back and I used to say it needed a hairnet. Very odd here, we had a tornado passed very close to us the day before yesterday (terrifying!) and yet no branches or twigs on the ground - very odd. (6 houses in town lost their entire roofs!)

16 Jan, 2015

Maybe a tornado whips up any twigs etc and deposits them many miles away !

16 Jan, 2015

A very enjoyable blog.

If only I could get a hat that suits me!

17 Jan, 2015

Thank you Chris ...
... light blue /turquoise are my favourite colours ..
I'm sure you look stunning in a good selection of hats :o)

17 Jan, 2015

Cracking blog TT........we have silver birch in our garden and I must admit the birds love it, a very useful tree to have, and grows very fast here......the boys look most fetching lol

17 Jan, 2015

Lovely pics Terra, I don't know what it is about Truffles face, but he always makes me giggle when wearing headgear. Conker just looks sweet in his hats. Love the robin's mohican too:-)

17 Jan, 2015

Hi Ba ...
Truffle thinks he looks VERY important, whatever garment he wears .. and yes, Conker has more of the cute look ... they both love dressing up !

Yes, even the robin was getting blown about. I was lucky to get that pic.

Thanks Dotty ...
This birch is in next door's garden. Has grown rather too large, but has compensations in that it provides good perching places for many birds.

I'm pleased with the blue colour of the wool ... suits the dogs well. Thank you. :o)

18 Jan, 2015

Very nice photos of the birds & the captions you make up for them are always so funny, I really love them! I sometimes wish I could dream up such great captions for my photos! I'll have to send them to you & ask you to do the captions for me before posting them in a blog! LOL!

I love to see how Conker & Truffles are dressed up! :-)) Fortunately I have a grey woollen hat to keep my bald head from getting cold & the few hairs I have left from being blown away! LOL!

Although the weather during our 10 day stay in Spain was pretty cold it wasn't nearly as windy as when we arrived back at Luton airport last Tuesday night. The bus we were going to catch was 20 minutes late & we had to stand out in the freezing cold wind for half an hour! We couldn't go back inside the airport for fear of missing it & having to wait at least another two hours for the next!

18 Jan, 2015

Lol Terra, I think it is his air of importance that does it for me, you've hit the nail on the head:-))

18 Jan, 2015

Thanks Balcony ...
yes, that would be fun making a blog, story and captions from another member's photos !

Yes, this is a chilly week ... you must have been cold at Luton airport. Today, if you go outside, you'll definitely need your grey woollen hat !

19 Jan, 2015

Lovely set of photos. Thanks for sharing TT. What a couple of characters Conker and Truffles are. Love their hats......

19 Jan, 2015

Hi Linda .. I'm pleased you like the blog :o)

19 Jan, 2015

Love the way your two dogs are so obliging they really do look like they are modelling bless them!

19 Jan, 2015

Wouldn't dream of going out without it, TT! LOL! :-))

19 Jan, 2015

Hello Teds ... my dogs absolutely LOVE photo shoots !

You'll need that hat today, Balcony ... freezing here !

19 Jan, 2015

Oh I do love your blogs Terra ! Our neighbour has a silver birch which is next to our fence and we also get a large selection of birds too, including the robin !

19 Jan, 2015

Hello Rose ..
I'm pleased there are plenty of birds for you to see in your neighbour's silver birch... it is a winter pleasure .. isn't it !
