VANCOUVER 2010.... another look at the UBC BOTANICAL GARDEN.

Back on 10th January 2009, I wrote a blog about the University of British Columbia Botanical Garden, Vancouver, Canada…..

…..that blog has lots of lovely flower photos and garden pics, but with the Winter Olympics approaching, here’s a follow-up to that blog, with some new photographs…

My thanks to Daniel Mosquin of UBC for his kind help with photos.

The Winter Olympics will be held in Vancouver, Canada, February 12th – 28th, 2010.

This is followed by the Paralympic Games ( Jeux Paralympiques ) March 12th – 21st, 2010

In anticipation of Canada hosting these exciting events, here’s another look at The University of British Columbia Botanical Garden.

UBC is a sprawling oceanside campus on Vancouver’s westside.

The UBC Thunderbird Arena Winter Sport Complex will be hosting the Winter Olympic Ice Hockey and Ice Sledge Hockey. Fantastic !
……………………………………………………………………

The University of British Columbia Botanical Garden was pioneered by the notable Scottish/Canadian botanist, John Davidson (1878 -1970).
He was born in Aberdeen, Scotland.

John Davidson worked at the University of Aberdeen before being appointed the first Provincial Botanist of British Columbia.

Davidson established a herbarium in Vancouver and a botanical garden near New Westminster. This was moved to the University of British Columbia in 1916, where it became the UBC Botanical Garden. It is the oldest botanical garden at a university in Canada.

Thanks, Spritz...I thought exactly the same about "time flies" as I was writing this blog.... was it really little more than 12 months ago ?

That snow pic is odd, isn't it. The Botanical Garden entrance looks like a skating rink...

So it does! I won't be going there, then. :-(((

I need to practice I bit more before I can enter for the toboggan run and there's not enough snow now. I might have to pull out :(

Great blog, TT, and lovely photos.

Hello Gee... Thanks :o)
Even if there is no snow, we need you to practise baking your unqiue wellie-shaped biscuits... Lol..
... I hear that Hywel has snow in Wales...

30 Jan, 2010

If Hywel has snow he can do the toboggan run :)

30 Jan, 2010

It seems Hywel is one of the few with snow, so able to get in some last-minute practice....
...he could end up competing in numerous snow events....
.... ski jumping, luge...and... 2 man bobcat with Blodyn... ...:o)

Laughed at your moonwalking comment on Denise's blog...
...............could you do moonwalking in wellies as your Winter Wellie Olympic sport ? Lol.

30 Jan, 2010

I am getting excited at the thought of the games starting soon...they have had to build up some of the runs with hay bales and cover them with snow for the jumps...the snow pack here and to the north in the mountains has not been quite deep enough. It should all work well, I think they have done this before..lol...anyway..it is fun to see the garden shots...thanks TT.

30 Jan, 2010

Hi Clarice...
Yes, the Olympians need the snow in Vancouver for the Winter Games, but, now, in the UK, we really are ready for some springtime weather in our gardens !... :o)

30 Jan, 2010

Beautiful pictures Terra the Acer one is my favourite, think I will be a spectator this year cheering Goy friends on, had my fill of snow for this year. lol

30 Jan, 2010

Hi Pansypotter...
Yes, the Acer is pretty, isn't it :o)
Too much snow in Britain for many of us this winter..
....roll on warmer days...

30 Jan, 2010

What beautiful flowers Terra. I was in Canada in 2008 and visited Whistler where the Winter Olympics are being held. They had started preparing for it even then and we were told also that properties there had sold for a fortune because of their prime location. I would think some of them could see the action from their balconies. I just hope they get all the snow they need.

Sandra x

30 Jan, 2010

Hi Sandra ~
How lovely that you've visited that area of Vancouver... I can imagine property being very pricey ! Yes ..snow...
they'll hope for the right amount of the right kind ! xxx

30 Jan, 2010

i could give it a try TT....LOL

31 Jan, 2010

Okay, Holly...
That's settled then..
..Good luck in your specialst winter wellie sport. ;o) x

31 Jan, 2010

31 Jan, 2010

Beautiful! Must visit Canada to, but in the summer or falll..! Don't think I could handle the cold...

1 Feb, 2010

Very interesting blog, TT. Not having much interest in sports I hadn't realised that the winter Olympics were upon us!

I remember reading a blog on this & even signing a petition to save some gardens. Was it your blog? I don't remember much about it now!

The photos you have chosen are really great - I especially liked the one of the Colchium autumnale and vitis vinifera ‘Purpurea’! A very lovely combination of colours!

The last snowy one of the entrance to the gardens, while pretty, I hope we don't see anything like it here. Yesterday there were snow showers all day though none of them settled. Even today there was a brief sleet shower this morning & an even briefer snow shower just before 1pm. If I hadn't been out in the snow shower I'd have missed it. It didn't last 2 minutes but it was composed of very, very tiny little balls of hard snow. If the shower had lasted 5 minutes all the ground would have been covered!

9 Feb, 2010

Hi Balcony...

I'm pleased you enjoyed this blog and the photos...
Yes, the Winter Olympics start this weekend....

I wrote a previous blog about the University of British Columbia Botanical Gardens last January, but Gilli followed that with a blog where she was asking for signatures to save another garden. I think that is the one you recall...

Yes, let's hope we don't get more snow this week.... we need some warmer springtime weather ! :o)

9 Feb, 2010

Thanks for clearing that up, TT! It must have been Gilli's blog then.

I hope the snow forecast overnight Thursday/Friday doesn't put in a appearance. We have had snow showers on & off all week except today. But it hasn't stayed on the ground fortunately!

11 Feb, 2010

On my latest blog, I've been reporting that the Vancouver Olympics are using trucks to bring in snow.....the weather out in that part of Canada is warmer than usual...
Shall we send them some of our snow ? ;o)

11 Feb, 2010

I saw that on the news on TV this morning! Seems incredible, doesn't it? As for our snow I reckon almost everybody in the UK would wish they could send over their trucks & cart away our snow!!! Ha ha ha :-D

11 Feb, 2010

Yes, we've had enough snow....we're ready for some warm weather and proper gardening...
..and then you can get out on the balcony with your fuchsias :o)

11 Feb, 2010

You can bet if we staged the winter olympics in Britain ,it would be the mildest on record :)) Good luck to Vancouver,I hope it hasn't all gone to Washington instead !!

11 Feb, 2010

Yes, good luck to Vancouver for a great Winter Games. :o)

11 Feb, 2010

Good luck for the winter Olympics in Vancouver! Shame that an athlete had to die the day before the opening ceremony. :-(

14 Feb, 2010

Yes, that was so sad about the athlete....
at least it was a freak accident and not terrorism...

My latest blog "Are You Ready ? " is continuing the Olympic theme...

14 Feb, 2010

I was reading that page when my granddaughter changed the page! :-D
