ITS THE TURN OF THE FRONT GARDEN

Seeing as we all have very little to do at present – no gardens to open for visitors, no veg or flowers to water, no plants to rescue from sudden downpours, no weeding..de dah de dah…I thought I would bore you with the progress on our front garden.
You may remember (or not!) the picture I took after our tree was planted..
Well, there was an untidy area under the cracked wall, an anemone japonica next to the rose, which had got so big the year before and mass of bluebells and an achillea that was about to take over the border next to the drive. Add the fact that there was little of merit in the centre oval apart from the tree. So out it all came!
The first picture shows the freshly dug bit of border. We are going to cover the unsightly wall with some trellis and grow a climbing rose and a clematis there with some ground cover at the base.
The second picture shows the absent anemone and in its place a hellebore, a gift from BJS.
The third picture shows our old statue from the Gazebo (we replaced her with an unbroken version) with 3 ferns at her feet, the dryopteris Brilliance and a couple of Athyrium Blanford Beauty and Regal Red. When they grow we hope she will look like she is walking through ferns..
We replanted the drive border with some Heucheras (one is quite tiny, hope it survives, and the daylily Bali Hai, a gift from Simbad last year and due to flower at any time now. Also a white lavender, an astrantia and a fuchsia, Delta’s Sarah (my favourite).
Finally we revamped the oval, with a choisya (it didnt winter too well but hope it will recover), four bearded iris, some sibiricas, daylilies (again thanks to Simbad for two of them), and 3 peonies. My Molly the Witch, looking none too well at present as it went a bit brown when we planted her (from BJS), Mme Emile Debatene and Itoh Peony Callie’s Memory. There are also some geraniums and Anemone levelleii. The anemone is not in the best place (it likes shade) but Im hoping it will do okay there.
I just hope it all turns out well. On the house wall we have the rose Masquerade and two new clematis in pots and the drab and dingy looking hydrangea which was uprooted in favour of the tree, looks a lot happier in its pot. We also underplanted our Rubens clematis in the brick planter.
This garden isnt a masterpiece in planting but it is a GOY garden, the gifts from BJS and Simbad, the Brilliance fern that Spritz posted, the anemone, geraniums and heucheras were all plants I admired from pictures you all put on GOY, a garden of memories for which I thank you one and all.
Ive added a couple more pictures to show the progress since.
New inner circle of Rose & Thistle terracotta edging tiles
And this shows the new outer edge of the path with a warm buff rope edging which tones well with the terracotta edging. We have tried to continue Bampy’s thoughts on a ripple in a pond.

Looking good tet, what tree is that?

Acer Brilliantisimum Lou. Peach coloured leaves in spring very pretty! Followed by unremarkable yet attractive dangling flowers as the leaves turn a pale lemony green. The leaves darken in summer but no autumn colour really, just a general fading back to pale gold. But it is pretty spectacular in spring. Its slow growing and a neat shape. Eventually reaches about 25/30ft..but unless I get to 95, I doubt I shall see it lol!

Lol Tet! I thought it was that Acer. A friend had it in his garden and it was truly lovely with the sun shining through those leaves. Sad to say he cut it down when it got too big:(

Thats really lovely, and especially as it is full of plants from GOYers. :^)

A great makeover and I think that wall will look great with a trellis so that you can get a clem and roses going.

That's made a huge difference, still deciding was to do with my front garden might wait until next year for that one. Like where you have placed your lovely statue:)

I like it very much, its looking lovely.

Looking very good Tet.

Hi Tet - nice to meet you..Just wandering through your front garden pics, how refreshing they look...A neighbour told me once, that everyones garden is made up of -'A little bit of mine and a little bit of yours' - :o)
I do like the way the grey edging compliments the planting, and the garden certainly draws the eye..

We will see how long it lasts Crissue (nice to meet you too). My neighbours warned me I could lose the pots and statue to midnight callers..well, the pots are old and the statue has a broken neck, and I cant worry about what might happen..never get any pleasure if you worry.

Thanks for your kind comments by the way, yes I think we all have plants with memories attached to them..went to my friend's the other day and she has finished planting up her courtyard (more annuals than perennials), but she went around saying, thats Ben's, you gave me that, Lena gave me that etc...so we all do it!

I agree with everyone ... it's looking good ... the Bluebells always end up looking 'tatty' don't they? I staked up an Achillea today ... didn't realise it had such an unpleasant smell! : o (

wow, you have been busy. I do love a good 'revamp' and your final photo is gorgeous...RESULT!
9 Jun, 2011
Thanks Karen, the proof will be in the growing!
I have Achillea Moonshine and Terracotta Shirley and they dont seem so rampant as some of the others. I do like it because it has texture and blends well, but the one in the front garden was on a world takeover bid!
Thanks Cristina, Labdancer..will post what it looks like in couple of months!

Love your front garden Tet. what a difference moving and re-planting does, at one time I was afraid to do that but not now!
9 Jun, 2011
Thanks Grandmage, yes Im not either, simply cos OH does it for me lol! Trouble is when I change my mind a day later he starts getting a bit iffy! {:-)
9 Jun, 2011
I am laughing at mo. cos thats just what happens here too!!! Lol.
9 Jun, 2011
LOL! I have a feeling there are quite a few long suffering OH's attached to Goyers!

I reckon so! Bless them.

It's a lovely set-up you have created in the front garden, M. Our garden hosts many plants from GoY friends (including yourself) and my one problem is many of them were kept in pots together for a few months and the plants now confuse me with who gifted me what! lol Poor excuse but I'm hoping I can make sense of notes I made to rectify that. I need a PA and I have found a nice notebook that my sister gave me some years ago so I'll be recording plants in a more orderly fashion...that's the plan!
It is nice that you could re-site your Spring Lady...I agree with so many of the other commenters that your trellis against your front wall will look very nice with clematis and roses growing up. Another great job begun and looking great. OH's do need patience with us, don't they? lol

This is very nice Tetra. A great makeover. I think you will do well to cover the wall because if I am not mistaken it is built of ugly grey blocks which I took an instant dislike to when I saw them in the house my daughter and her husband bought as their first home together. They seem to be the no.1 choice for garden walls and do serve a purpose in keeping the boundary clear of weeds from the outside but seeing them for the first time on a dull winters day made my heart sink. I brought down loads of pyracantha plants to plant outside her wall because it was already well planted inside. There is a footpath alongside the wall and people kept telling me that it did not belong to me but I just told them I was trying to make the wildlife happy and the village more attractive because she did not need to look at it but it might brighten someones day to see a big of green instead of the grey. It is evergreen and has flowers with a nice perfume in spring followed by lovely red berries in the autumn. I was right and so are you. I like the idea of roses and clematis together. It will be lovely when it has grown. .

Great stuff! Hellebore: I'm a great advocate for them. With luck, they self seed and you can after a few seasons, have a host of them.

what a great design, this is lovely

Thanks all.
Scotsgran, our back garden has brieze blocks, we would have loved to have brick but we needed a second mortgage to do it!! So we painted the blocks a soft pale green and it works beautifully.
I have added a final two pictures to the blog to show us reaching the finish of the centre. Still the wall of course..but thats for another day!

Hi again Tet...wow what a finalé...well done...an OH too, yes they do put up with a lot of mind changing, but then we are women after all, we're entltled lol...I'm sure you're thrilled with the finish...and just to add those Garden thieves need their fingers cut off...
I have also found eight young Hellebores this year in my garden, which i'm thrilled to have, they are planted in my bits and pieces bed till they establish a bit more then i'll move them into their growing places...

I have had a peek at your new photos and yes the wall does look just right in that shade of green. It does work very well.
24 Jun, 2011
Really looking so nice in your additional photos, M. The circular pattern of your various surfaces really brings the area alive...as you say, the wall can be a later project :) You may have noticed our concrete fencing in the garden. Our garden lady recommended we have it painted a very dark chestnut brown as the concrete when painted white (as we had planned) would be sort of "in your face."
We did have it painted the dark brown and it does show off the plants without glaring out as it would have done in the white. It may not be to everyone's taste in such a dark colour but we are very pleased with the result. Just a thought as you consider your wall for a later time...lol

Didn't you do well? looks so much better great result.

What a great make-over, Tet! Isn't it just wonderful to fill your garden with such great plants from other like-minded Goyers? It really does make it extra special in every sense. hope that we can catch up with you again my friend..\0/x
