Non-Polymerous

You would think that a daylily that is non-Polymerous would
just be a regular flower, but there is one form that pops up every few years as a one-off. That is the 2 petal/2 sepal flower. Daylilies will often throw out there a Polymerous type, and some do it almost all the time. My favorite Polymerous type is one called ‘Moose Man’. It is most often 4 and sometimes 5 petals.

Others will just pop up for a one time show and then go back to being normal like (Marked by Lydia x Clairvoyant Lady).

Others will give a Polymerous type 20-30% of the time, which isn’t enough to register it as Polymerous. An example of this is my ‘Pico do Vale Verde’.

But the one that is the rarest of the lot is the 2×2. It is sterile, so the traits have not be reproduced on any level that I have seen. Even photos of it in other gardens are impossible to find. But I had one today! It is [(Better Lucky than Good x Hippie Crash Pad) x Michigan Nikki]. Here it is in the normal form:

It rained and had fog all morning, so I picked it and took it to my house to photograph.

Also open today was ‘Buster Ruster’.

Thanks for showing us your Polymerous Daylilies, Wylie! I did a search for the term "Polymerous" &, curiously the only images that came up were of Daylilies!

The explanation of the word means something like "numerous" or "many" & it seems is mostly used to refer to more petals than normal. We are able to see that in some of your photos, which by the way, are lovely! 👍😀

That the word polymerous means numerous is what makes the 2/2 so unusual since there isn't a daylily term for fewer.
