Never really taken to growing tulips, but, last autumn decided to give them a try, thought you might like to see how they did, this may just inspire you to have a go too!!

Hope you enjoyed our selection, as you can see they come either pale and interesting, bright and beautiful, dark and mysterious to just simply gorgeous, so then, something to suit all tastes………

Lovelyselection there ... I'm becoming a Tulip fan too, since I was given 'Negrita' and 'Shirley' varieties. One 'Negrita' (purple) one snapped on the stem, I put the bloom in a glass of water and can't believe how BIG it'sopened up! : o )

Lovely specimens there Dotty, looks like you'll be continuing with them. Will they all re-grow next year? I could be wrong but I think some don't, hope all of yours do. Did you see the frosted ones on GW last Friday?, I like the red and yellow goblet type but have to say the frosted ones were quite special. Max bygraves, Arr that takes me back lol

Is it best to remove tulip bulbs when they have died back? Do i have to wait for them to die back completely or can I remove bulb and cut to base of leaf once the flower head has fallen away? So many questions.....

25 Apr, 2010

Lovely blog, Dd and amazing photos too.

25 Apr, 2010

lol dotty was just having a quick catch up before film lol, its getting harder to keep up now we are all in the garden working ;o))
Dan you need to let them feed on the leaves before cutting back a few weeks and also feed them along with daffs when flowers are gone so you get good flowering next year, its up to you if you take them up or leave them in, im not sure which to do myself yet, richard takes his up and puts in paper bags, then hangs them up like washing out of the way which i though was a good idea, keeps them dry to ;o))

Gee I have been called worse...lol OddB San has answered your question, we get ours up and store them in the shed, we also grow several in pots as well, as a back up, I shall still buy more this Autumn,(just in case we lose some) a little tip to all if you have squirrel problems plant them with hot chilli pepper....it works. Heron I did see the ones on GW, and they are on the wish list, glad someone remembers good old Max lol
Thanks all for your comments.

26 Apr, 2010

Thanks San, Derek & Dotty.

I shall be leaving some in and most up in bags I guess but may put them in sun as well on some days during summer!!

26 Apr, 2010

I call that 'going overboard' - and I'm very glad you did - they're beautiful. I've got quite a few in pots this year and dithering about whether to plant them or not. I remember the Marchioness of Salisbury saying you should plant them at least nine inches deep for them to reliably survive. Anybody else heard this?

26 Apr, 2010

OHs job he says they should be planted two and a half times the size of the bulb.....thanks TT Grindle and Wagger.

26 Apr, 2010

I saw the frosted Tulips on GW this afternoon. I thought they were lovely, too! I'd love to have some of these on my balcony! LOL!

27 Apr, 2010

this is the first garden where I can plant lots of bulbs and I am 'slowly' increasing the ones I grow.
there are some beauties here dd2. and some that I am growing too. :o)

27 Apr, 2010

Thanks Seaburngirl, have just noticed there are some more to come, so will tag them on later.

27 Apr, 2010

wagger- at nine inches deep hte bulbs will no get baked in sumer- no good i thinkin- dd2 seem to hav rite thinkin- if you wory bout frost, dig htem up in autum- i do, it work well for me :)

28 Apr, 2010

Thanks for that Derek. (They certainly haven't been 'baked' the past two summers, lol.)

28 Apr, 2010

You really must stop doing this DD2, between you and Louise with her Irises, I`m in a spin, where can I find enough room for Tulips and Irises. They really are eye openers.

28 Apr, 2010

Sorry Stroller.......it is awful isnt it, we get hooked and that is that just no hope.lol

28 Apr, 2010

They are nice in bud. You have quite a lot of lovely ones. I always put them somewhere shady to try and make them last a bit longer

30 Apr, 2010

What are the ones called that are second from the bottom - Gorgeous tulips, any tips for a first time grower?

7 May, 2010

Hi Annelise do you mean the black ones? 1-19 which number?

7 May, 2010

Hi DD No 18 also 1 & 8.

When did you plant the bulbs - Oct? Did you plant yours two and a half times the size of your bulbs. I thought you could leave the bulbs in all year round and thought that's easy enough, but just read about people digging them up?

8 May, 2010

Hi Annelise no 1 is Negrita.......8 is Shirley....and 18 Turkestanica. They were planted by OH at that depth, and we do take most of them up and store them in a shed (a bit of a pain) you can leave them in but then you have to remember where they are lol and not plant on top of them.......we planted them in October, unfortunately all those were early flowering (the cold has kept them flowering longer this year) we have a few parrot ones to come out, those we leave in the border.
