Little 'Un

Many of you will know that I share my home with three tortoises. Little ’Un came to me about 4 years ago when he was found wandering along a road miles from any habitation. In spite of intensive enquiries no one came forward to claim him so he stayed with me and, with Jubilee and Josie, became known as the Terrible Trio.

He was lively, always into something, so you can imagine my shock when I found that he had died during last night.

I cannot explain his death, he was not having any breathing problems and wasn’t off his food. With hindsight I realise he was not as active as usual over the last few days but that is the only thing I can pinpoint as slightly unusual.

I have buried Little ’Un at the end of my back garden, where he dashed around freely and joyously over the last 3 summers. He may have been small but he was a big character and all the family will miss him.

Sorry to hear you have lost your baby, glad you had three summers of enjoyment though.
All our cats are buried in our garden, so they live on in our hearts.

Very sorry to read this, Gee. Will you make enquiries as to what may have caused his demise? I always thought Tortoises hibernated over Winter?

I am so sorry, Gee, I lost one of my redfoot tortoises last night as well. She had no symptoms. They are not as active during the winter as they are in the summer & nobody really eats that much - they are used to being outdoors and they hate being inside, but that's everybody, not just her. I don't know what happened.

Are your tortoises Greek tortoises or another so-called Mediterranean species? If so....I would worry about herpes virus infection - very common in those species & almost always fatal. I have Hermann's tortoises who came to me after they'd been exposed to herpes. 3 of 7 have died in spite of veterinary treatment & I have been told to expect 100% mortality.
