18 Jan, 2011
Never seen 'witches butter' before- very strange! Could just eat those scones! :-)
18 Jan, 2011
Thank you. I've just pm'd the recipe to you, Yorkshire, they are yummy! I posted a photo of witches butter some days ago and Amy found some too, Red aly. It is very bright and easy to spot in the woods. Too late to offer you a scone, the family came to visit yesterday and they have all gone :)
18 Jan, 2011
life sounds wonerful, even on a wet horrible day. :-)
18 Jan, 2011
Good on you Gee, you are obviously well prepared for your meanderings, don`t remember ever seeing that witches butter anywhere, is it poisonous?. There is a lot of water around your area and I bet your walking boots were getting a wee bit heavy..
Molly is having a well deserved rest and I hope you did too, the scones do luck rather tasty and the little warmer in the glass...
Lovely blog and pics even with all the water....
18 Jan, 2011
I think the fungi is edible, Lincslass, but I wouldn't want to try it. It is also, apparently, known as Yellow Brain fungi! The warmer in the glass was sloe gin :)
18 Jan, 2011
Nice one Gee........You certainly seem to be waterlogged where you are.......The scones look so scrummy too.....
18 Jan, 2011
lovely blog, and a good idea ~ walking ~ but i dont fancy that mud ~ looks like the type of mud we had to run through on cross country runs at school
those scones look very tasty but the sloe gin is looking even better!
18 Jan, 2011
My mother had a red anorack hanging behind a door just like yours. It was there for many years and she wouldn't get rid of it lol
I threw it away a few months ago when emptying the house.
I'm glad you both had a lovely walk and something nice after you got home :o)
There's nothing like walking in the rain. I love it !
18 Jan, 2011
You earned those scones, Gee, with all that walking in the mud ... I hope Millie had some bonios too :o)
18 Jan, 2011
did millie have some nice dry boots to wear?
18 Jan, 2011
... and a wide-brimmed hat ? ;o)
18 Jan, 2011
OK, I'm convinced. Next time you go walking, knock on my front door - I definitely need the exercise! Mind you, I think wellies and a wet suit might be a good idea.
That was a great blog, I feel rather tired now!!! :-)
18 Jan, 2011
I enjoyed that Gee. The only good thing about the frosty weather is that the dogs keep clean. I need some waterproof boots for gardening, are yours walking boots.
18 Jan, 2011
i have seen some wellie boots decorated in jelly beans and im very tempted to get them but i already have walking boots ~ can anyone think of a good excuse ~ why i need wellies as well as walking boots?
18 Jan, 2011
made me giggle Gee, great as usual, more like the swamps of florida than the uk in the woods lol, must take you ages getting ready then cleaning up once back, im tired thinking about it , great pics :o)
18 Jan, 2011
Mine are walking boots, Dawn, bought up in the Lake District and I love them. I am not a lover of wellie boots as I once broke my ankle while wearing them - ouch!!
I'd have to walk a long way to knock on your door, MW :)
18 Jan, 2011
Lovely blog Gee, The scones looked scrummy but I see they are now all gone. :o( Never mind, I enjoyed your muddy walk very much as it reminded me of my own...lol! :o)
18 Jan, 2011
Thanks Gee. Ouch, no wonder you wear boots rather than wellies. Wellies are a bit restrictive for gardening, I should know, I'm always wearing them.
Sticki: your excuse to have both is cos you need wellies when the water is above your ankles, lol
18 Jan, 2011
hmmm it was quite high today cos i had to hose down the paving which was full of mud
walking boots take a long time to do up and to undo?
18 Jan, 2011
What a good day that turned out to be Gee :-)
18 Jan, 2011
Great blog Milly and the scones both look lovely. :0)
19 Jan, 2011
Sticki - "can anyone think of a good excuse ~ why i need wellies as well as walking boots?"
a bit like Dawnsaunt's answer - cos the mud's six inches deep.
19 Jan, 2011
Walking boots are good for muddy conditions because the mud sticks in all the little grooves and you grow taller as you walk :)
19 Jan, 2011
i think im being convinced i need those boots! i shall try them on tomorrow!!! ~ and send you a picture!!!
19 Jan, 2011
Lovely blog Gee. Scones and drink look good too. I think I must look a bit like you, Gee, when I walk out on a wet day. Red jacket, woolly hat, nearly the same stick and my old Nike walking shoes that must have covered many miles. No dog or socks over trousers. Damp down your way.....runny damp. I can do the water rushing down the culvert, but not those treacherous muddy tracks. No wonder Millie might like to lounge indoors!!

Really enjoyed your blog and photos, but at moment i'm eating for fun, got a new under counter fridge and freezer coming tomorrow, i bought them new years eve, and if i waited 20days they would deliver free and take my old ones away, so i asked my friend who lives next door but one to me if she would be able to put some of my frozen food in her freezer, which she is doing, but i thought i'd try and use as much as i can as didnot wont to over load her with my stuff, well been eating alsorts this last 3wks, but the food did'nt seem to go any less but she as just taken three big farmfood bags now to but in her freezer, but i'm sure i've put weight on, so now i can slow down and although i dont like salads in winter, thats what i'm on for a couple of wks.
19 Jan, 2011
You're right with your description of 'treacherous muddy tracks', Dorjac. I met a friend while I walked Millie this morning and she had fallen down on her knees - she was more concerned about her new trousers than her legs though:)
I love the idea of eating for fun, Clarice, but I don't envy you eating salads just now. I love them in the summer but they just don't taste the same during the winter months. Sounds like you got a good deal with your fridge and freezer though :)
19 Jan, 2011
there is a nice way of making carrots into salad ~ grate several carrots, dry-fry some sunflower seeds until gold and begin to pop then mix the 2 together with some mayonnaise!
19 Jan, 2011
Sounds good, Sticki, apart from the mayonnaise - it makes me ill :(
19 Jan, 2011
oh sorry ~ salad cream or creme fraiche or yoghurt instead?
19 Jan, 2011
Not keen on any dressings, Sticki, so I'll just have it plain. I think pine nuts would be yummy too :)
19 Jan, 2011
they would! i love those
19 Jan, 2011
Enjoyed your walk Gee, despite all the mud, good job Milly has long legs, remember everytime I took Polly out in the mud she had to have a bath! Nice to get back to those yummy looking scones and that warming drink?
19 Jan, 2011
Our culverted river has stopped rushing down to the Thames in a rather angry impatient way. For places subject to waterlogging and flooding, boarded walks covered in wire are good. They are expensive fixtures. Walking on semi liquid mud is dodgy. Going off piste is dodgy too. You could leave a shoe or boot stuck.....I have visited Rainham marshes (RSPB) in the wet and the boarded parts are a boon. Mr and Mrs Duck were tails up in the still fast running Rom yesterday delving near a culverted stream outlet. Must be paddling like mad to stay put. You are very determined Gee to have your walks!
20 Jan, 2011
youve just described my perfect day Gee, home cooking, togging-up for wet weather walks with excellent company & back to home comforts, priceless.
20 Jan, 2011
Much calmer here today too, Dorjac, no rushing water in the woods - it's just sitting there! Since I adopted Millie walking is a must, Dorjac, and I am enjoying it very much. I carry my camera and can't wait for all the new growth/life in spring :)
Thanks, Bampy, I am very lucky to have the woods nearby and Millie is priceless :)
20 Jan, 2011
All the latest research shows we are supposed to be 'in the green' as often as possible Gee. Children are short of vitamin D from being too cooped up indoors. Going about alone in the woods and without a dog is dodgy. I had a whole series of friends for walking in Havering, Bedfords, and Southweald Country parks. Now I'm last woman standing. GJ and I used to do a lot of walking too. You spend a lot of time on a muddy walk planning your next step!!!
21 Jan, 2011
yummy the scones looked lovely and the walk was nice too. mind you if i had eaten them scones i would need lots of walks they look a bit more-ish :)
22 Jan, 2011
How did I miss this? smashing blog, well photographed and funny too and scones to boot.......as I said before smashing.
12 Feb, 2011
your scones look very nice gee...... glad you and millie managed to get a walk even though the woods were rather muddy.... my lawn is very waterlogged at the moment....
