Allotment -Part 9

Here we are half way through season and enjoying the “fruits of our labours”…..potatoes….lettuce…raddish….salad leaves….beetroot..cabbage…gooseberries…;peas…carrots….the climbing/runner/french beans are starting to set their pods…..the peas have been disappointing this year…..but many other allotmenteers have experienced the same problems…..now looking forward to more carrots and salad stuff…..sweetcorn….swedes…..the bean family of course….and brocolli……the caulis have not set any curds so may be discarded…..there are the sprouts later in the year of course…..and the leeks…….yum..yum.
The onions are about ready…..and the garlic….
The dahlias got off to a slow start but are growing well and hopefully there will be some blooms good enough for the local flower show in the middle of august.
Phase 2 is about to start…….the red currant bushes have been cut right back and the sprayed area raked off……We may erect a polytunnel on this area….more detail later…
Forgot to mention the tomato plants in the greenhouse….these were bought in rather than grown from seed….a bit disappointing but they were put in late…..there should be a small crop….The morello cherry has been re-located as it was obvious it was not happy where it was…..a question of planting at the wrong time of year….it is being closely watched.
All in all, I am well satisfied with my first season….so far……

Hi Stripes....the variety is "Shelta"...they have a good heart and tightly packed leaves, slightly crinkled....a bit like a savoy...and they steam up beautifully......
