Some before and after shots of my garden. The older pics have been scanned so the quality isn’t brilliant.

Taken on 25.05.2001 the day after we moved in. My ex with a strimmer. The pots by the garage are the plants I bought with me.

What a huge difference the shrubs have made, making your garden look bigger. The difference the 7th and 8th is quite astounding. It all looks beautiful.
I hadn't realised how shrubs could apparently increase the size. You'd think putting more in would fill it up and it would look smaller, well in theory.
Lovely blog, lovely photos Annella, of lovely garden.

26 Nov, 2009

Thanks Mad, it's harder to see the boundries now so looks bigger. Also the lawn is smaller now (-:

Oh my goodness....., I'm speechless Annella ! What an outstanding transformation ! Your ability to make add plants yet make your garden look larger is no easy feat, and I just love your work ! I can see why your garden is full of wildlife and Katydids ! They love it as much as I do....;-). Most Katydids are herbivorous, consuming foliage, stems, flower petals, fruit of trees. So you have given them a slice of heaven here on earth ,and a slice of heaven it surely is, my friend !

30 Nov, 2009

Hi Annella, I will be happy to show you pictures of my before-after ...
Not yet know exactly how it works this forum, I think the only way is to open another blog ... or are there other ways?

30 Nov, 2009

Yes, Amano - start a new blog! That's exactly what to do. :-)))

30 Nov, 2009

Whats happened to your boat Mac ??? :-)

2 Dec, 2009

Its just a different boat now Annella , I jumped ship this is the vital spark a clyde puffer from along time ago it's in fine trum!!

2 Dec, 2009

Modern Para Handy eh?

2 Dec, 2009

I'm so impressed by your great garden. Must admit though, it does make me feel a little bit inferior. I don't think my garden will ever come together like that.
Beautiful.

2 Dec, 2009

Beautiful work Annella.....love the paths and depth of it all nice views too...so nice to see it each day,I bet. Especially since you have done the before and afters...were you surprised?

2 Dec, 2009

Hi Annella - I think most members on GOY myself included enjoy seeing good before and after pictures and so many have already complimented the effect you have achieved. Your garden has made an excellent first impression on the site. The height and interest from different complimenting colours gives the garden a balanced feeling in tune with the location. In other words I liked it and felt very comfortable with it. I am most interested in the future garden plans. My attention was caught by the slope. It is difficult to judge from the photos but the rise looks about three and a half feet. The slope up looks about 13 feet from the lawn to the top but I can't really see the end for sure. Such a slope is shallower than slopes in my garden so perhaps it is not such a big issue. Nevertheless my guess is that this is the area you are focusing on for improvements and it might involve access on the slope combined with denser planting. Anyway I like to think of something different to say and if possible some fun. If I am way off base I don't mind everyone laughing at how wrong my guess was. Really I am just intrigued what you are going to do next.

2 Dec, 2009

Speak 2 u 2moz :-)

2 Dec, 2009

Hi Catfinch, yes very surprised. I was inspired by Bluespruce to do the before and after but I had to dig out the before pics first. Looking at what had happened over 8 years was good fun :-) If you have'nt already, look at Blue Spruces blog.

2 Dec, 2009

Thank you Valerie, this garden has been put together over 8 years, there have been many failures!!! The pics you see are the first year i think i maybe got it nearly right :-)))))

2 Dec, 2009

Ponty ...What's that mean? Do it urself? :-))

2 Dec, 2009

Para Handy was the skipper of a Clyde Puffer in a series of books I read so many years ago that this is all I remember. :o)) I'm sure Maccrimmon can tell you more. They were fun, as I recall.

3 Dec, 2009

And the name of the puffer was the Vital Spark , also a tv programme many moons ago Roddy McMillan played para handy but the books were absolutely brilliant!!

3 Dec, 2009

I thought I recognised the name Vital Spark when you first mentioned it MacC but it didn't register. Yeah. Roddy McMillan. Now there's a name from the past!

3 Dec, 2009

I remember Captain Pugwash :-))))

4 Dec, 2009

he had some very strangely named crew

4 Dec, 2009

Seaman Staines ???

4 Dec, 2009

yup and there was another one

4 Dec, 2009

Master Bates, Roger the cabin boy ? Whats wrong with the crews names? I used to love that program when I was little........hehehe

4 Dec, 2009

me thinks you know Annella . . . . .. bad girl !

4 Dec, 2009

LOL. Everybody remembers these crew names (including myself) but they NEVER existed. They were a joke which became an urban myth which has brainwashed the whole nation. Fantastic. The cabin boy was Tom.

5 Dec, 2009

Ponty are you telling me Willy never existed?? !! :-))))

5 Dec, 2009

hey Annela

Gulp . .. . non of them were called errr William

5 Dec, 2009

Possibly, Annella but certainly not the famous three named above!

5 Dec, 2009

I've had to look it up on Wickipedia, how could i have heard about those names, was it my parents?

6 Dec, 2009

I wouldn't know if it was your parents Annella. I'd have to ask your age and then you'd have to kill me! The Urban Myth has been around for so many years. It is quite amazing that everyone "remembers" those non-existent names, probably because they were "very naughty". :o))

6 Dec, 2009

Juat caught up with this blog Annella and all I can say is....Wow! what an amazing difference:-)

18 Dec, 2009

Fab pictures. What a transformation. Do you have it exactly how you like it or is there a project in the offing....:o)

12 Jan, 2010

Rather late finding this, what a difference you have made to your garden with clever planning and planting, amazing I love how it is on different levels, adds so much more interest to a garden. What more can you do to this beautiful garden I ask myself?

3 Mar, 2010

I'm so pleased this came up again, it really is inspirational and has made me want to don my wellies and tackle the garden...well make a start anyway. Thanks Dd for arriving late:-)))

4 Mar, 2010

No problems......

4 Mar, 2010

Wow what a transformation, beautiful garden, just how i would like mine!!

17 May, 2010

Thanks Daylily :-)))

18 May, 2010

That's just amazing! The best thing of all.....after all that planting and growing, the garden looks BIGGER!!! Tremendous results! love the old pics, shame there isn't one of your son 'after'!! They do tend to be a bit camera shy though don't they! :))

11 Jun, 2010

Now that one has really grown Karen!!! He was so cute when I took that pic, now he wears size 10s :-)))

11 Jun, 2010

Yes, mine too! 6'1" and size 12s!! Built like a rugby giant he is....make some lucky girl a wonderful partner one day maybe.......:)))

11 Jun, 2010

Brilliant Photos and Blog! There is hope for mine yet! Maybe in 9 years time Lol :)

15 Oct, 2010

I've just enjoyed looking at this again Ann. It's amazing how bigger it looks now...even though it's much fuller! I suppose it is bigger because it has lots of vertical interest. it's an amazing transformation and like Sparklysocks it gives me real hope for my own efforts at hiding the neighbours!!

15 Oct, 2010

Hello Karen and thank you, Sparkly I'm glad you enjoyed it and thanks for taking the time to look + it won't take nine years, mine was good in two :-))))

15 Oct, 2010

what a transformation ~ its just incredible. when you look at the garden as you first had it ~ can you already see how it will be?
you have done a wonderful job, its a beautiful garden.

1 Jun, 2011

Thanks Sticki, It's funny to think when I took the early pics I would never have imagined showing them on GOY. Every year there are small changes, more this year because of the winter damage so none of them were really planned but I quite like them now. I enjoyed seeing the blog again, thanks for taking a look :o))

2 Jun, 2011

second look for me too, absolutely stunning!

2 Jun, 2011

Thanks Daylily

2 Jun, 2011

what a good thing you took the original pictures ~ the changes are what fascinate me. im not so good at seeing possibilities as you are.

2 Jun, 2011

Sticki my main aim was to cover the fences and gain some privacy the rest has just evolved. Even my OH has changed perhaps I should have put a before and after on of that Lol!

2 Jun, 2011

that made me laugh ~ do you have the formula for that???
evolving is obviously good in your garden; not so good here.

2 Jun, 2011

The formula= He was re-planted with a younger version when wilt set in Lol!

2 Jun, 2011

annella ~ you are on very good form ~ very funny!!

2 Jun, 2011

oh wow! I hadn't realised how small the garden actually is - it looks huge with the shrubs hiding everything beyond the fences. What a phenomenal piece of work and imagiantion and creativity.

A garden is always changing, evolving - one constantly gets new ideas, finds new things to do or new ways to do old things, and so the garden reflects the gardener - and as with life in general, daily changes are so small that one doesn't notice them until one can find a way to comapre then and now.

do you have any thoughts for future? features, water (depends how old your children are) or such?

I've looked throught he photos at least three times, and, oh, I envy you! - but in the nicest possible way.

19 Jun, 2011

Annella, loved looking at this again...I've decided you've been having us on...it's a totally different garden! You can't fool me:-)

19 Jun, 2011

Now that's a good idea Ba! I think I shall go and find a lovely garden somewhere.....

20 Jun, 2011

:-))

21 Jun, 2011

Same garden Ba, different man!

21 Jun, 2011

Aaaah is that the secret:-)

21 Jun, 2011

totally awestruck, what a piece of design and what a fantastic job you made of it.
i really thought your garden was enormous, and way out in the country.
i will fav. this blog and get lots of inspiration from it, if you don't mind.
love the before and afters, you get much more idea of the blood sweat and tears that've gone into it.
thanks for putting it on, i'm going back in again...

28 Jul, 2011

Thank you Resi, that's a big compliment :o))

28 Jul, 2011

Annella, you did a glorious job!

22 Mar, 2013
