This was my birthday surprise from my husband.A short break to a lovely Hotel, near Fountains Abbey.and just over an hour away from home,so a nice leisurely drive through lovely countryside. As we were approaching the Motorway,we saw this eerie sight as we looked down at the valley,so had to stop and take a photo, along with lots of other people, it was a lovely blue sunny Sky,but seemed as though someone had thrown a massive duvet down below, over Halifax, and surrounding areas.
We have never seen anything like it before, and as we drove further down,it was like a very thick fog,and stayed that way, till we climbed back up to find the sunshine again.

We then called at a garden centre between Poole and Otley for coffee, and a nice browse, admiring the display at the entrance and the Halloween one, inside, before driving through the tiny, pretty village of Leathley, which is where the original Farmhouse used in the filming of"Emmerdale Farm" was used,at the start of the series.Continuing on towards Harrogate, and Ripon,we reached our destination.for two nights, and a lovely friendly place to stay, with good food.Very enjoyable. We then drove to Fountain’s Abbey
for lunch, and as I had never been, but Russell went when he was at school,I was really looking forward to it,so while we were there,we decided to join The National Trust, something we have meant to do for a long time….so we didn’t have to pay the parking,or entrance fee…:o)))
What a place…and sorry folks, but there are lots of Photo’s,as it was so beautiful, and breathtaking,I can’t leave any out…so if you feel like nodding off,I will understand..Lol. Here we go…Its a long walk, and took us over 2 hoursHope you enjoy….

Are you keeping up? a fair way to go yet….

This was just added for amusement,in later years,so not an original..but her view is spectacular.

We had to go in this,to see what the structure was at the far end..I thought they were the “outside Toilets”Lol.,but when we asked one of the many helpers,it is actually an oven..like our Barbecues.! Well, what would you have thought ? :o)

I have never seen as many pheasants, and there seemed to be more on the roads than cars !We had to drive very carefully,as they didn’t hurry to cross the road at all.

We are now approaching Studley Royal, and The Water Garden, through a very dark S shaped tunnel..a bit scary!!

The Octagonal Temple, now locked and used for storage, but lovely views from here too.

We are now making our way down to Studley Royal,Russ just having a breather,as it was so warm..

This is a new bridge over the River to visit the Deer Park.

Aren’t they gorgeous ? They didn’t even move.

Up the hill to St Mary’s church, and almost at the end of our lovely day out, tired, but wouldn’t have missed it for the world.we will certainly go again.

Back at the visitor centre, and we had been here for about 4 hours, had to rush to the visitor car park,as it shut at 5pm…just made it.

I haven’t included any of the History of Fountain’s Abbey,as I would have been here till Christmas, but I hope you have enjoyed the visit with us.If you are interested, you could Google it,and learn of it’s interesting past.

Lovely photos... what a wonderful area to visit :o)

Lovely day out, - particularly like the haar seen from above in the first couple of pics. I remember when I was 16 I took the bus on a thick, foggy day to Crystal Palace, where I had a Saturday job. Now Crystal Palace is much higher than the surrounding areas, so as the bus got there, we popped out of the fog, where it was sunny and bright. Got off the bus on what looked like an island surrounded by clouds instead of water...

The pictures give us a great idea of the beauty before your eyes as you walked around...what a nice birthday surprise for you, Bloomer.

You certainly had the weather for your break...that tunnel you went through is a bit spooky alright! We're NT members too so this will go on my "to visit" list as it is within reach for us.

Very interesting and I'll have to look again at the photos. Couldn't take them all in first time lol my concentration is dwindling :o(
Now I always think how wonderful those abbeys must have been before they got demolished - such a shame.

And as for the mist, we sometimes get it here. I'll show a photo of the view from my garden on such a morning - you can see the top of the hill appearing above the mist lol I'll post it later on.

Thanks Mavis,They are some of my favourites too.:o)

14 Oct, 2010

Really enjoyed this blog, Sandra, the architecture is fantastic, the photos of reflections in the water are amazing, love the Deer too and I'm pleased you're N.T. members now, think of all the money you won't have to spend to visit so many of their properties and gardens. Blimey, I sound like a rep. for The National Trust ! One of the best associations we ever joined. : o ))

14 Oct, 2010

I'm pleased you enjoyed it Shirley, and we are glad we joined too,as we have quite a few places we can go,not too far away for a day out...wouldn't mind going back to Fountain's Abbey,as the trees will have more autumn colours now..lovely.. and we hadn't time to see all Studley Royal either.

14 Oct, 2010

Lovely blog Sandra...so pleased the weather was kind to you. Your pics brought back lots of memories of the time we lived in Harrogate. Had many a delicious meal in the Chequers too..:-))))

15 Oct, 2010

What a great blog Bloomer....The weather looked great.....glad you had a good time....

15 Oct, 2010

Cheers Lou.I thought it would bring back memories for you..fancy you going to the Chequers too,it has got a good reputation. It is still family owned, and they really make you welcome..great place.
Thanks Motinot,it was a lovely day,so looked at its best..
Went to a few other places the next day..Pateley Bridge,Ripon and a converted corn mill, which has been made into a shopping place, and a nice cafe, and restaurant..
so another good day..

15 Oct, 2010

I also forgot to say....I must have spent a small fortune at Stephen Smith's when we were there,!!!!!!!!

15 Oct, 2010

I can see why Lou...just glad we didn't call on the way back,or the luggage would have had to go.Lol.Have you been since they redesigned it inside? it looks great. We usually go there when we go to the Potato day,at Huby..

15 Oct, 2010

Bloomer....can you enlighten me? What is Potato Day? and is Huby in Yorkshire? Ta.

15 Oct, 2010

I will try,Whistonlass.Huby is in North Yorkshire, not far from Harrogate.A Gardener who has a regular programme on radio
Leeds, has a Nursery there, and every February, they have a potato day in the village hall, with every variety you can think of,for people to buy. They are sold singly,so if you only have a small garden like me,its great,as you can buy just what you need. They have these events at a lot of other venues across the country, and I did either a blog,or a comment about it probably last Jan,or Feb..can't remember exactly.I remember looking up dates where they were, for other members.Hope this helps...

15 Oct, 2010

Thanks for that, Bloomer. It's not something we'd likely attend as we don't grow any veg but it sounds a great opportunity for folk like yourselves so you can buy in small quantities for your veg plot.

Harrogate area I am familiar with...beautiful countryside round about.

15 Oct, 2010

Yes it is a good idea, and it is always very busy. The ladies who help in the kitchen make lovely bacon butties
too.mmm.Lol.

15 Oct, 2010

Oooh...so the ladies and the bacon butties are the real attraction...all is revealed..lol

15 Oct, 2010

Yep,you got it one !..and the bar was open too,so Russell was happy as well..and the spuds were delicious..just had the last ones last week..:o)

15 Oct, 2010

Fantastic blog. Superb photos. The last time I visited Fountains Abbey was about 45 years ago.

18 Oct, 2010

Thanks Am,glad you enjoyed it...Think its about time you paid another visit ..Lol.It was about 50 years since my hubby went too..with school.

18 Oct, 2010

What a wonderful Birthday Gift. I`ve really enjoyed the photos you`ve shared, and put it on my list of places to visit. I`d rather do trips like this than go on fortnightly holidays.

18 Oct, 2010

It was Stroller, and if you really enjoy something ,a short break is just as enjoyable,as a long one....but had just come from a fortnights cruise the week before,so that was brilliant too..A very lucky lady..:o))

18 Oct, 2010

What fantastic clear shots....the sunshine and blue sky, all the stunning views, the water, the animals....lovely!

Up here we get these low mists very regularly. We call them 'Har', rhymes with 'oooo-aaaar' like long john silver! lol! I was amazed like you the first time I saw one. I was walking on a beach, my feet on the sand were visible, my head was clearly there, but my middle.....just in the clouds!! Great fun!

27 Oct, 2010

Thank you,Karen..glad you liked them. What a lovely experience you had on the beach..I can just picture it...:o)

29 Oct, 2010

I've got photos in the loft Bloomer! I should get them out and scan them!

30 Oct, 2010

That would be great Karen...get up there ASAP..look forward to seeing them...:o)

30 Oct, 2010

I love Fountains Abbey, Bloomer, been there 3 times but the A Boleyn view is a new one on me and havent seen the octagonal folly before. Have seen Fountains Hall and the mill tho. Its an amazingly big place and the Abbey is stunning. Glad to see it all again.
Btw, tho Ive been to St Mary's never been inside, always too late to see it, but we were told that if you stand outside and look down the slope on a good day (with binocs for me!) you can see Ripon Cathedral. Was built on a direct line between the two!
Oh dear, I can feel my feet getting itchy again, and its not even spring!!

31 Oct, 2010

I want to go again too, especially as the trees will be looking beautiful just now.I don't think you can see the A,Boleyn view, from the river bank walk. When you are nearing the lake, there is a signpost to the left, and it is winds up to the top.It is a bit steep..but well worth it..we stopped a few times..! It then levels out,and the Folly etc is on that footpath as well. You then follow the path down to the bottom again...Are your feet still itching now?

31 Oct, 2010

LOL! yes indeedy..Im always up for it..doesnt mean I can do it tho!
Depends on the day and the knees.
You are right Ive only been on the lower walks..by the time Ive taken my Umph-hundred pics of the abbey (to add to the Umph hundred on my puter) I dont seem to have time to do it all....
Get a feeling next time I shall be using that little bus on occasion.

31 Oct, 2010

Good idea, using the bus,Tetrach,..I might too..a lot longer walk than we thought. We may go in via Studley Royal next time,as we didn't have enough time to look round properly...

31 Oct, 2010

If ever you get down as far as Buckingham Bloomer, you must go to Stowe Gardens..that too is a sizeable walk but so many temples and plants and trees, I managed a 5 hour walk (with stick and comfy shoes and a few seat stops), so very well worth it and the School to view at the end of it

1 Nov, 2010

That sounds nice Tetra, and will bear that in mind if we ever go..:o)
