A walk of Nostalgia :o)

Last Friday, was a calm ,warm day,but overcast..so we decided it was ideal for another walk in our Colne Valley. My apologies for lack of clarity with the pics, but it wasn’t a clear day at all..
I had been thinking for a while,I would like to visit the area where my Grandma lived, and where I spent a lot of my childhood..so many lovely memories..and as most of our walks entail a climb from the valley..off we went..after a gentle incline,we arrived at the house..all modernised now,but nice to stop and ponder, and remember…but oh,the gardens.!.all overgrown, and full of junk..it used to so well tended by my uncle…sad really…anyway,on a lighter note, the next door neighbour came out,and it turns out,he used to be a good friend of my OH,throughout school, and teens..he invited us in for a cuppa..so that was really nice..more nostalgia than we thought…
So,suitably refreshed,we set off up the hill,to do the circular walk…
A lovely plaque to show the old mill chimneys ,mostly gone now..OH,sat on the wall, patiently waiting ! ..as usual :o)
This is the view I used to look at from Grandma’s window..
Onwards and upwards…for about 2 miles ! ..I don’t remember it being so long ,or so steep either..must plod on..
We made it ! and now on a flat country road..:o)..
Chilling out…
Ah,a familiar sight..almost ready for going downhill..
On the downward leg now..about another two miles!..I
didn’t expect to see these Highland cattle..as you will notice, not very clear,as they were a long way off..I zoomed in as much as my camera would allow..
The village of Slaithwaite in the valley..our destination now..and the bus stop !
Arriving at the start of the houses now..this little beauty came to greet us..:o)
We had a lovely day,and although it was about 5 miles altogether..I am glad we made the effort..some happy memories to remember…

If I had that view from Grandma's window, I'd get nothing done ... just look and appreciate :o)

Lovely walk to a well loved place. Change as well as continuity. It were ever thus.

How lovely B. such happy memories there, apart from the garden but sadly these things happen. What a view from the house, sigh! I have been researching my family tree for years now and it is wonderful learning about the past. I love visiting old graveyards too, I take photos of the family graves and then I have a permanant record of even more family, something to do a research for during the winter time.

Thanks Sandra. Isnt it lovely to reminisce. You may remember my blog last year about meeting a third cousin I didnt know about, well we have met several times since and we are going to go together to the place where our g/grandparents used to live and where we used to visit. Probably in a couple of weeks time. I'm so looking forward to it, but I know that the houses have all been modernised now, but the views should be virtually the same. Your pictures are great, lovely views.

I do love a trip down memory lane, your Grandma had a lovely view and its nice that you were able to go back and admire and remember good times.
Lovely pics Bloomer, thankyou for sharing your day...

Thanks Tet..easier on the legs as well, walking from the computer..Lol...but I slept like a log at night :o)
Thank you,Sticki..it was quite a pull up there, but felt elated..and relieved, when I reached the'Top o' the Hill' ! Lol.
You are so right,Ojbi...luckily the changes are minimal, and
most things are as they were..and have been, for generations..
thank you,G.mage..My cousin has been researching the Family tree too..my,a few skeletons in the cupboard have come to light ! ..I could almost, but just out of view,,see the house where I was born, across the other side of the valley...and still live only a couple of miles away now..so I have many good memories of the area..
Thank you,Cinders..yes I do remember your unexpected meeting with Family..and good you keep in touch..that will be a sentimental journey for you all..and when you see it,even more memories will come flooding back..You will be really looking forward to that..:o)
It was nice to go back,Lincslass, and I confess,I really wanted to look in the window..as there is a path runs past all the doors and windows, on the row of houses at the back..but I daren't, seeing as it now has patio doors instead of a window now..!..last time I was in there ,was 1974,and it still had the blackleaded fireplace and coal fire ! I guess that will have long gone now...:o(
Thank you Sheilar...I have been saying for a long time,I wanted to revisit..and I live so near too..but you know what's it like..so glad we made the effort at last...
!...I guess that will have long gone..:o(

A lovely sentimental journey Sandra :-)

Thanks Lou..did you ever get round to the Lingards road side of Slaithwaite, off Manchester road towards Marsden ?

Lovely walk in a lovely area. Glad you had a lovely day. I went on a 'nostalgia trip' to my childhood place once and wished I hadn't as it was quite upsetting! When did the houses shrink and become so close together? Has part of the local forest been removed only it's so small now? Road junctions had been altered allowing no left turns causing me to drive round and round until I could get my bearings again. Where's my old infant school? There's a housing estate on its playground now! Who paved over the back right-of-way to the end of what was mine and my neighbours gardens? It used to be a magical place with huge juicy blackberries and wild sweetpeas and a 'den' under a laurel bush. Pleased you enjoyed your trip, but I won't be taking my trip again! :o(

What a disappointment for you,Nariz..I can imagine how you felt..around most of our local villages here, little has changed in those, just on the outskirts...which mostly, have been built in keeping with the surroundings..although these days, not in our local stone ..far too expensive now..but in stone effect..I suppose, over the generations, all of our homes were built on green land
originally..before we knew or cared about it..people were grateful to escape the living conditions of the time..it was inevitable..I appreciate people need homes,so I don't mind that much, but wish they wouldn't build such ugly faceless 'boxes' with no character,in some areas..it must have spoilt a lot of memories for you..
.

What a lovely long walk:)

Yes, memories were well spoiled, Bloomer! Hardly anything left that I could actually relate to, apart from the house itself - but that's also been vastly changed. Ho hum. :o(

Thanks,Nana d..it was nice..but didn't think it would take as long ! the flat and downhill bits were best.Lol..

Well done you to walk five miles, and some of it uphill! Lovely to join you, and enjoy your local scenery. :)
7 Mar, 2012
Thanks Sheilabub...we have decided to really make an effort this year, and do more walking..sadly hills are inevitable round here..but we can catch a bus uphill, and walk back!..glad you enjoyed it :o)

Good idea, Sandra . . . you must have plenty of choice for lovely walks. My brother is mad about Yorkshire, and has chosen to retire to Settle - do you know it?
8 Mar, 2012
I know Settle quite well,Sheilabub..we used to stop en route from Cumbria, when we lived there..to stay with Grandma..and more recently, when my school friend lived in a small village near Lake Windermere..used to call in then as well..to visit a lovely little coffee shop, and browse round a nice shop called 'Jumpers',I think..they were all pure wool.. I only ever bought one,but it lasted years ! :o)

Thanks Bloomer. They've only been there two years, but love it to bits. Makes a nice change from Amsterdam, where they spent most of their adult lives!
8 Mar, 2012
Glad they like it there..who wouldn't ? a very big contrast to Amsterdam,I agree..and a much more relaxed way of of life,I would imagine..just the thing for retirement, and chilling out from pressures of work..:o)

What a beautiful part of the country you grew up in Bloomer...I'm very envious...and how lovely you still live there:-)

Thanks Ba...I am a lucky so and so,aren't I ? and I really do appreciate it much more now..must be an age thing ! Lol.

Hi Sandra. A lovely set of scenery pics.
Nice to meet up with old friend of your OH.
A pity the garden you remember was so overgrown...
but maybe it is now a haven for insects etc ...
That view from grandma's window ..
.. stunning ! :o)
