Nostell Priory...Wakefield.

Another lovely sunny day,so we had a drive out,to walk around the parkland and grounds. The Priory was built in the 12th century, but after the dissolution,it was sadly knocked down, and the present house was built in the 17th..although it is still called the Priory..It was later taken over by the National Trust, and funding given from the Lottery.
We didn’t go in the house,as it was too warm to be inside ,but hopefully,we will do that another time, and see the large collection of Chippendale furniture, and designs by Adams..

A sad reminder of the problems happening in our gardens..

There are so many that have succumbed to this disease, and this what we saw all around..but lots of new ones are being planted,to take their place..

Anyway,onwards to the top lake..

The druids bridge on the lower lake..

Lovely stone archway, inviting you to to see some wonderful views..

..wonderful Magnolias in full bloom..just breathtaking..

In the background,a building called Menagerie House..which didn’t seem to make sense..

It is all boarded up,and the only sign of life, are Wisterias coming into leaf..

Nearby, one of the gardeners was cutting the grass..so me being the nosey person that I am,I asked him about the curious name..
Apparently, there used to be performing animals ,kept in cages in the grounds, mainly bears,,in the days when it was a novelty, and this was the keepers house ! Just a horrible thought..there is nothing inside to look at now,so it was boarded up..but they are now in the process,of reconstructing the cages,as they would have been, and this one of them..I wish I hadn’t asked !.

moving on..and this is called the Obelisk Lodge..quite a long walk off our path,so I cheated and zoomed in !

Almost full circle now,and some more splashes of sunshine :o)

A lovely day,and hope you enjoyed the walk with me..

I've done this walk, Bloomer. (Not often I can say that when folks post these great blogs). It's quite a trek all up and around, but certainly worth it. It was autumn when I was there and the trees were fabulous.

Thanks Sev..they also have been upgrading the stable block, adding extra space in the tearooms, and moving the shop in there too..officially opens tomorrow.. trust us to go on the wrong day ! didn't take a pic,as still had men in hard hats working there, and some scaffolding..
........................
Cheers Paul..guess you like it then ! Lol.That tree was amazing..they were hundreds of tiny branches..never seen one like that before..looked like a bad case of five o' clock shadow ! :o))))

Thank you,Sticki..pleased you enjoyed it.It's years since we went there..sorry, I didn't have my trademark scone, but we had just had a massive carvery lunch at a nearby pub ! Lol. ...

Ah,Ojib, you know what I was talking about then..glad you enjoyed it too..it did look a bit lacking, without the trees in leaf, but still enjoyable....I will make a note about going in the Autumn..thank you.:o)

Lovely walk...I really enjoyed it! Thank you for taking me with you :)
Sad story about the menagerie. You shudder to think about the thinks that happened in the past. No doubt a few generations on and they will possibly think similar of us!

Great blog Bloomer . . . beautiful arch, and love the lake with the reflections. :))

You are welcome to walk with me anytime,Scottish :o)
I agree about the menagerie ..just horrible..and about the future..they would be saying'poor things, having to press letters to be able to chat to people..'Lol.

Another great place to visit Sandra, you certainly had lovely weather for your walk, I can understand you leaving the interior until a cooler day, sad to think of the poor animals cooped up in those cages, We were only talking about Belle Vue Zoo the other day and how all the animals were kept behind bars in cages to small and in some instances like the Elephants chained to the grond, we thought nothing of it then but I feel very sad thinkng about the conditions [Im regressing from your lovely walk, may be one we could try together in the Autumn;0)] Pleasedyou had such a lovely day ;0)

I do love your trips out Bloomer, I`d never get to see around these places without them, I agree it did look too nice to go indoors, also an excuse to go another day.
I like your nosiness, lol, how else do we learn the history if there isn`t a plaque to read.
Smashing spring pics...

Great blog Sandra, what an interesting place, nice photos too

Hi Mrs Nosey!! Lol you sound like me, I always have to stop and ask while OH marches on quickly as if he isnt with me. Lol. Nice gardens in this place and I love that arch, drawing you through, such a pleasant afternoon walk. On the one show the other eve. they were showing the plight of that disease on conifer trees in Wales, they have had to destroy masses of trees in one area and were asking visitors to wash their shoes before leaving so as to not spread it further. Quite worrying really.

That was a really lovely walk, Sandra, thanks for taking me with you. You've all been having some spanking weather, haven't you? We have 30°c at the moment, but, thank goodness, next week promises to be wet, wet, wet. I shall be really pleased, 'cos at the moment I cant get the fork into the concrete-like soil, nor aerate the lawn properly, nor feed it nor seed the bare bits, and it's spoiling the whole effect!

Thank you,Carole,Lincslass,S.lad,Cinders and G.mage..It was a nice change, and good to have a day out .always ready to do that..it was quite lacking in signs explaining what things were, which would be more helpful..only a little leaflet given as we went in,but basic..so that's why I asked a gardener..Poor man looked red hot, cutting the grass,so he seemed to be glad of the break to answer my questions ..or maybe he was just being polite :o)...I must have missed that on the One Show,as it's something we watch..or record, whilst it's been nice..too good to stay indoors after tea...
We did think it was quite expensive there,so glad we were NT members...£2.50 to park, which was about the norm, but £6 to go round the gardens, plus £9.50 for the house..the parkland was free with the parking ..but don't think we would have paid £6 for the gardens..not really a lot to see,and nowhere near as good as some others we have visited..,I only noticed a Rose garden, which would have been in flower later on in the season....other NT properties we have visited, have much more to offer....but we still enjoyed the walk in the sunshine...:o)

Thanks Gattina..30 degrees ? that would be too hot for me..I would be looking for permanent shade ! ..Hope you get the much needed rain, and we do here too..Water butts almost empty already...It is nice and sunny again, today ,but cooler with a chilly breeze out of the sun...no rain forecast yet...hope it doesn't till after the weekend,as Thomas is two next week, but having his 2nd birthday party at home on Sunday....we need to get them outside in the garden !!!

I love these old places and gardens .... so interesting.

Pitty that building is boarded up, and what a horrible past it had :o((
I've never heard of that disease. I hope it isn't spreading too much.

30 Mar, 2012

Thank you,Amy..glad you enjoyed the stroll...It looks like it will be fine at least,on sunday..so that's the main thing..they won't bother if its cooler,if they are having fun,or fighting over things ! ..just finished wrapping presents :o))
...........................
Thanks Hywel..we are lucky to have all this history in Britain..and agree about that building..probably they have done so much this year with other buildings here,I suppose funding only goes so far..and it is a shame about the disease affecting old conifers and Rhodi's..not a good sign..at least they are replacing with new ones,so hope they won't be affected.

Enjoyed strolling with you Bloomer:-) but now you've depresses me with tree diseases and animal cruelty:-( But it's nearly Thomas' Birthday, so cheerful news...not depressed now:-))

Thanks Ba,..I didn't like that aspect of it either, and thank goodness it is all in the past...had a great time at Thomas's early birthday party yesterday...even though none of the little ones wanted to 'pass the parcel' on ..as there was a little packet of sweeties under each layer ,so they didn't want to let go ! Lol.....bless em :o).

Lol I wonder if the game was invented to teach them about life Bloomer? I bet everyone won a sweetie in the end though;-)

2 Apr, 2012

maybe,Ba..and yes, they all got one ..the final prize was a little Easter egg and eggcup with a chicken on it ..cute..and all went home with an Easter Egg. happy memories ..:o)..there were only five children,so just enough, but they were all good ..no tantrums at all from these two year olds :o)

I really enjoyed seeing this, Sandra ... are you sure you don't work for the Yorkshire Tourist Board on the quiet? ... Your visits to all these lovely places just make me want to come 'oop there' for about a month! ... :o)))
