Starting at the bottom of our cul de sac..this is shared by four bungalows, each having a section in front of our properties..Originally,it was landscaped ,but although nice shrubbery, and evergreen..it was very boring with no colour..so we decided to do something about it !

There were also two Sycamores planted..and as you will see, there is a huge one already, that someone had a preservation order put on,so we can’t even trim it back.A lovely tree, but a nightmare when it sheds its leaves,so we took the others out, and replanted them in the wildlife area,at the back of our properties….
.far too big for that narrow border, anyway….We also have an Alder, which I left in,as it was central to all the border.,and looks nice in summer..

This is the first very steep garden…the lady here is almost eighty,so has to have a gardener to keep it tidy..obviously,she has kept all the shrubbery, and just added more in the way of colour, with Berberis, and Mahonias..and a small bit at the bottom for annuals and perennials..

The view looking to the full length of the borders..

It now drops down to ground level, and the start of our
section…which extends as far as the Alder tree on the far left .we keep this trimmed to a reasonable height..more in proportion that way,as it puts on a lot of growth every year..

This third section is my next door neighbours ,up to where the paved area narrows..again,an elderly lady ,who can’t manage it anymore, but we try to keep it tidy..her family come a lot,but never offer to do it for her..so what can you do ? She gets very frustrated about it getting overgrown..so we keep her happy ..

This last section belongs to a severely disabled lady and her husband..who although fit, doesn’t like gardening..so they had it landscaped..it always looks neat and tidy, and some nice shrubs..

This is a blast from the past…as it was 10 years ago…and you can see what it was like..I couldn’t wait to dig out all those shrubs…and car parts, and bricks and rusting stuff, buried underneath !There used to be garages here…some landscapers eh? I rang them and demanded they came and took the 20 bags of things I dug out ..and they did ! ..then I started to put my stamp on it..in my silver shoes !! ..Lol.

So what did I do with all those shrubs? Well I left one or two .in,.and no,I didn’t throw the rest away…here they are…behind our back fence..in our wildlife area..along with a Buddlia I took as a cutting ,from one I found growing wild, further down by the stream…we laid leftover paving here as well ,so I can take a short cut to the Co-op, nearby ! :o)

Hope this meets with your approval,Ba ! :o))

Very well done, Bloomer et al. You have certainly put life into this area. It all looks splendid. What a great idea and what a bonus for the residents - or anyone thinking to buy a house there. How many regular helpers do you have?

31 Mar, 2012

thanks San..it helps that everyone is proud of their own little piece, and so they still try to do little bits, even though it's hard for them sometimes..but they know their limitations, and it also gives them a feeling of independance by trying.....very important.. :o)

31 Mar, 2012

It certainly gets my approval Bloomer, you have done yourself and your neighbours proud, I hope they appreciate all the care and attention you obviously give to it all...

31 Mar, 2012

A big Well Done from me Sandra as I have witnessed all your hard work and creativity, it always looks beautifully kept and colourful with all the shrubs and Flowers and provides a lovely view from your frontage [It also keeps you out of mischieve lol]

31 Mar, 2012

Thanks Sue..I couldn't wish for better neighbours, and as there are nine Bungalows here, all for over the 55's.( and we are all well past that !) Lol..we all seem to have the same values, and they help us in different ways too,so it works both ways :o)
.........................
Thanks Carole..that's a lovely compliment...mischief ? a long time since,maybe ! Lol...happy memories though .:o)

31 Mar, 2012

Don`t believe a word of it, anyone who gardens in silver shoes is definitely up to some sort of mischief before too long, lol....

31 Mar, 2012

Lol,Sue ..it takes all sorts ,as they say ! :o)

31 Mar, 2012

LOL, you wanna see my gardening styles sometimes...

31 Mar, 2012

A Tutu,perhaps ? Lol..

31 Mar, 2012

That all looks great. We have a grass verge directly over from us - I would love to do something with it - but as I would be the only one interested - it would be too much to take on!
Smashing!

31 Mar, 2012

Thanks Scottish..I know what you mean..sometimes it's enough with what you already have,to look after..especially when you work..and once you start, there's no going back ! :o)

That was interesting. I don't think I'd like it though. I like being shut away lol. .... And nice that you help that lady who can't do it any more. That must be very rewarding.
I must say the big tree looks a bit daft where it is, but it's sad to chop a healthy tree down, so nice it's got a preservation order on it.

What a delightful drive up to your houses B. fantastic, I would help you if I lived there, brings out the community spirit in one!! Love your silver shoes too, you will have to start a trend. That border is wonderful, Question= when do you find time to do your own garden???

1 Apr, 2012

What a transformation youve made there Bloomer. The original landscaping was so boring, it looks heaps better. How nice to garden in a communal area, with lovely neighbours. They are so lucky to have you there. You should give yourself a big pat on the back!

1 Apr, 2012

Thanks Hywel..I enjoy chatting to my lovely neighbours..and as most of them live alone now, they look forward to a bit of conversation..I am naturally a 'chatty' person..and loved working with the public..so ideal for someone like me :o)..I have the choice of having some 'quiet' time,in my enclosed back garden..so best of both worlds really Lol...I agree about the tree, but it's been there as long as I can remember..we could see it from our last house.(we only moved to this side of the Bowling Green from the other !) just wish the person who had an order put on it,would come and sweep all the leaves up in Autumn ! ..grrr.

1 Apr, 2012

Cheers,G.mage..your company would be very welcome :o) ...bring your matching shoes..Lol.mind you, after 10 years, they have long gone .I have some sensible black ones now :o) It isn't hard to look after ,now it is more established, mostly Perennials and easy to maintain shrubs..I just put some Annuals in the gaps for summer,so manage the back and front garden ,no problem..both easy maintenance too..happy days :o)
.................
thanks Poppylover..I totally agree..it was very boring..I do love greenery, but it can look so bland..especially all the same shade of green..I feel very priveleged to live here, among this nice little community..Wil get OH to give me that pat on the back..although it might feel more like a slap ! Lol..only joking :o))

I wondered B. how can anyone put a PO.order on a non-native tree?? Sycamore are not native british trees and were introduced by the Romans probably from France!!

1 Apr, 2012

Well done you, all that hard work but it looks really nice.

1 Apr, 2012

Thanks Bloomer \0/ what a treat it must be just arriving home! and how lovely to have such a friendly community too...almost like an extended family. The great design seems to promote neighbourliness, yes Prince Charles would approve lol. There is such a thing as society and it's thriving on your doorstep:-) I love all you've done there along with your neighbours...not too sure about the silver shoes though:-))

1 Apr, 2012

Yes it's nice to chat to passers by. I used to do it when living on the main road, with a big garden. I used to give people cuttings etc. Nobody passes here - it's a cul-de-sac, .... a bit boring but at least there are no huge lorries hurtling past and shaking your foundations.

1 Apr, 2012

To be honest,G.mage I have wondered about that too..even asked a local councillor to enquire..but never heard anything.! It isn't that we don't like it,but it is so big,and with overhanging branches,it could be a danger in a storm,I think..also, the neighbours who section it is on,have wanted it taking down altogether..but they are worried about having.. to bear the expense of a tree surgeon ,to deal with..so we declined to get involved in this instance.
.................
Thanks Carol..a labour of love really,so all the work was worth it :o)
.................
Ah,there you are,Ba! Lol..better late than never,I suppose :o)So glad you approve..just have a word with Prince Charles, next time he calls round to yours, for a cup of green tea..,and I can tell you are very envious of the silver shoes..very upmarket here, don't you know .Lol.
.....................
I know what you mean,Hywel..chatter is nice, and we don't miss the traffic either, with ours being a cul de sac too, although we do live very near a main road, but hardly hear it....heaven ! :o)

1 Apr, 2012

He's popping in tomorrow Sandra, I'll be sure to show him your blog. I bet we'll be seeing copies in one of his model villages:-))

2 Apr, 2012

Hi B. I agree with you, it would have cost thousands so best to keep quiet, but still never the less a huge worry particulary in bad weather and high winds. Mind you the tree looks as if it has been there years so it will have deep roots, so fairly safe I would have thought!

2 Apr, 2012

Oh goody,Ba..I bet he will think we are related, when he sees it...touches of Highgrove ? Lol...In my dreams :o)
........................
Yes,G.mage..sometimes it's best to keep ones mouth zipped..and not easy for me,I can tell you ! Lol...It is very stable,I'm sure..just the overhanging branches that are the problem..glad it's not in front of ours,as it blocks all their light from late afternoon...

2 Apr, 2012

Such a shame, I am all for trees but in the right place!

2 Apr, 2012

Did you move house across the bowling green by wheel-barrow , Bloomer ?
At least you didn't have to learn about a new area .

2 Apr, 2012

Exactly,G.mage..the builders were just on the point of chopping it down, but it had to be abandoned...
...........
Lol,Driad..just having a vision of that ! haha..what,and just chuck everything over that high wall ? ...if only it had been that simple..but that's another long story ! :o)

2 Apr, 2012

o)))))

3 Apr, 2012

Finally I made it to this blog! ... I think it all looks fabulous, Sandra, year round interest for everyone in your cul-de-sac ... in pic 4 what is growing on the wall to the right? ... I am fascinated by the way plants take hold in walls! ... :o)

6 Apr, 2012

Thanks for looking,Shirley..the plants on the wall, are Campanula's that have seeded, from the ones in my section..there is a bigger one lower down, which was the first to seed..I agree,it's marvellous how they seem to be happy without any soil.!..I hope they spread even more :o)

7 Apr, 2012

Fingers crossed that they do ... :o)

7 Apr, 2012

Mine too :o)

7 Apr, 2012
