First time Tulips..in pots, and the ground. Both have grown well, but I think the pot grown ones, just have the edge..far pot had Violas in as well, but had to pull them up..and never got round to buying more Primulas..
Contrasting with Jacob’s ladder..
Photinia,RedRobin..new last year, and growing nicely now..lots of new growth coming from the bottom,so pleased with this..lots of room to grow in the long border..
Lithodora..a replacement for a blue Gentian, which didn’t do well..with a dwarf Euonymous (I think ),which has been there for years and never gets any taller, but spreads ever so slowly..

Thanks Pixi..glad your Jacob's ladder is growing :o) I hope the Lithodora spreads a bit more,it seems quite slow..but I love the colour..I haven't seen yours so will take a look later..xx

looking really nice Bloomer, you have some wonderful colour already :-)

I tried the tulips in pots again this year bloomer, but haven't got round to putting them in the ground. Yours look lovely. I saw a photinia red robin once that had been lollipopped. It was at a garden centre and in flower, it looked amazing (price was amazing too). I have thought of giving it a try, I did it with my holly, but you would have to be careful to prune at the right time to get the flowers with the new growth:-)

Thanks S.lad..everthing coming to life now :o)
......................
Thanks,Ba..I am pleased with them, especially when it's the first time I've grown them..I have toyed with the idea of doing that with the Red Robin too..but will wait till it's grown a bit bigger and stronger..sounds a nice idea .
I bet your holly looks good :o)
......................
Thanks Cristina..I haven't a clue what to do with them later,as I will need the pots for summer bedding ! Maybe I should have thought about that, beforehand, and bought some pots just to keep them in for next year..
....................
So do I,San..I am quite besotted with them...good old Aldi ..20 for £1.39p ..cant't go wrong..:o)
.....................
Great ,aren't they,G.mage..I must have missed how Carol Klein did hers...can you tell me please ?
.....................
Thank you,Sheilabub...onwards and upwards in the garden now, isn't it.? I wasn't really expecting them to all be pink, although it did say so on the packet ! Lol..you just wonder, when they are so cheap...I'm glad they are :o)

All looking lovely Bloomer....I tried a wee drop tulips in pots this year - all looking good. They don't seem to grow in the soil - probably to moist for them. I may try some more next year since they look so good.
You've just reminded me about that Lithodora - after seeing Pixi's I want to get one.

Lovely pics Bloomer, my tulips are doing well this year, although mine are all in the garden, I 've never tried mine in pots, I do have some daffs in a pot and they are a lot taller than the ones in the garden.....
10 Apr, 2012
Thanks Scottish..maybe that's the reason..I wondered if the pots have better growing material in ,as I think mine are in better condition than the main borders.they always have decent compost in them, and also grit for drainage..I also put some sharp sand under the bulbs when I planted them in the pots....
..................................
Cheers,Sue...maybe the same reason as above, regarding your daffs ..just a thought :o)

Lovely photos Sandra, love the tulips, they are so elegant aren't they.

The tulips are a lovely colour !
They look good in the pots. :o)

I think you and I are now 'hooked' on tulips and yes they do seem to do especially well in pots.
What are you going to do with yours when they have finished flowering?
Yours look lovely.

Nice :o) Lovely spring fresh colours :o)
10 Apr, 2012
Thanks Cinders and Terra..They are quite tall, but seem to have stood up well against the wind too..:o)
.....................
Yes,I think we are,Wildrose, and so pleased I tried them.I'm not sure what to do with them after flowering, although they will have to be moved from those pots for the summer....I might ask on 'questions' or google ,unless you have any suggestions..I know some lift them,or leave them...
................
Thank you Hywel..spring certainly gives us a lift..:o)

Your Tulips look lovely to me both in the ground and in your pots, I must get some more for next year mine are in the ground but think I will try some in pots next year as you can move them round then, I love the Lithodora what a brilliant blue , its one I havent grown before but will look out for it now ;0)
11 Apr, 2012
Thanks Carole..it is a lovely blue..I almost forget it's there, till it starts flowering again..I didn't have any luck with a Gentian,as it needed ericaceous soil, but the info and label on this said it didn't...that's the reason I bought it..mine is quite slow growing, although Pixi said hers spreads a lot..I wonder if there are different varieties ?
11 Apr, 2012
I have never had luck with Gentians either, I think sometimes its more the soil and climate conditions when some plants do better in different gardens, at least your Lithdora is thriving and so pretty too;0)
12 Apr, 2012
I agree,Carole..you will have to treat yorself to this one..or persuade Harry that 'you're worth it ' .Lol.
12 Apr, 2012
lol Harry wouldnt hesitate he knows Im worth it!;0))
12 Apr, 2012
lol,Carole we know he does..:o)

Yes, I think that tulips are better in pots than in the border. Tulips don't do well in the second season -- in my experience it's best to renew them annually. The ones in my border just produce leaves and a very few blooms.
See my recent blog on my tulips.

Thanks Kowhai..I will have a look ...

Love those pink Tulips, Sandra ... much prettier than the bright red and yellow ones I forgot to lift from the border last year! ... My 'Negrita' ones have all appeared in the ground again, considering they were planted in December 2007 I'm amazed! ... The 'Shirley' ones are sleeping though ... not one has shown itself yet ... :o(
18 Apr, 2012
Thanks Shirley..They must have grown another six inches at least, since I took this pic..and the flower heads are huge ! They are still haven't opened up much, but I prefer them like this ..looking like Tulips,if you know what I mean Lol...Hope your 'Shirley ' ones come through soon..
