A day in York..The Shambles

In mid August,we were treated to a weekend away by our daughter and partner,to celebrate Russell’s 70th Birthday..
Our first day was spent in York, one of our favourite cities, and not too far for us to travel..
We were blessed with two warm sunny days on the trot, which has been most unusual this year..!
Have a stroll with us around this historic city..
As there is so much history,I will show you one part at a time,if you will bear with me,reading about this one street

Firstly, the start of the street called The Shambles, which originates from a Medieval word’ Shamel’(booth or bench)and once referred to as’ Flesshamel’ meaning around flesh.as it was a street of Butchers shops and houses. In 1872 there were 26 Butchers shops

Livestock were slaughtered here, and the meat was sold over what are now,the shop window ledges, which were the Shamels..Some of the original meat hooks in the walls, can still be seen..

The pavements either side, are raised up,to create a channel, which allowed the Butchers to dispose of their waste products from the Animals…..ooh,nice !

The way the 15th Century buildings lean into the middle of the cobbled street, means some of the roofs almost touch in the middle.and are mentioned in the Domesday book..It is Yorks oldest street, and Europe’s best preserved medieval one..

at last,some photo’s :o)

The Street Artists were so interesting..this one must have been a fan of Jenny Joseph,a vision in Purple :o)

How does he do this? and I wonder who does his hair?? Lol

This man was cutting names of children out of wood, for their bedrooms..no safety equipment at all ,just a pedal assisted jigsaw..and my,he was so quick, and all were perfectly done..

Further along the street..with a view of York Minster in the distance..which I will show you in my next blog, along with the Museum Gardens..

More photo’s ,less reading next time,I promise ! Lol

Very interesting to learn of old England. Thank you for sharing your trip Sandra.

Thank you for the tour and I look forward its continuence. I decided to mosey around York too and dropped myself down onto High Petergate and actually entered the Lamb and Lion Inn which is nestled to the side of a medeval gate. It's marvelous because these map people are not only walking along streets and pedestrian walkways, they are now going into establishments.

Thank you Paul..I'm pleased you enjoyed a small part of York :o)

Thank you Loosestrife..I know the area you 'walked ' around.but we didn't go as far as that this time.I agree,it's great when you can check out places of interest, and I have since looked at the Lion and Lamb Inn..very nice :o).I know a lot of the history of York, but I needed to consult Google, for factual dates etc..We live approx 90 minutes drive from York..

I love towns and cities that have layers of history exposed right in front of you.

Thanks for posting the Blog, Sandra. York is perhaps my favourite city, in England, with Beverley coming a close second. I find those street artists fasinating. I can only marvel at how the Purple Man on a Bike, holds himself so still. He was there when we took Freya a few weeks ago, but she wasn't keen. Looking forward to part 2...

Ages since I've been to York......thanks Bloomer, look forward to the next instalment

theShambles are amazing, and now I understand the name.....I thought it was the higgledpiggledy shops!

11 Sep, 2015

One of the many good things about the Internet,Loosestrife..we can go anywhere we want :o)

11 Sep, 2015

Thanks Julia..While we were looking at him,a man commented, did he know he was parked on double yellow lines ?? then I realised he was a friend making a joke :o)
Can you believe we have never been to Beverley? We need to rectify that soon :o) x

11 Sep, 2015

Thanks Pam..to be honest,I wasn't sure about the name either..Mr Google is so helpful :o) x

I love York, have been quite a few times, one of the places one can always find something of interest, as you know I am well interested in the olde worlde places Sandra and the history that goes with them,York is one of the best, did you go up Cliffords Tower, always makes me feel sad but I still go back again, never yet plucked up the courage to go on one of the Ghost Walks though, great photo's Sandra, looking forward to seeing more...

11 Sep, 2015

You must Sandra. I'd go by bus, but as far as I can work out, it's a devil of a place to get to...woth it though I think.

11 Sep, 2015

Thanks Sue..it's as you say,so much to see each time you go..even if you have been many times before..We haven't been up Cliffords Tower yet,as we always seem seem to run out of time, but have walked past it many times..it's on our 'to do' list though :o) I have no interest in going on one of the Ghost walks,,as it's not my thing..and we haven't been to the Jorvik centre yet, either ..We will take Thomas to the National Railway Museum ,when he is a bit older.,as Russell was a Fireman on the steam trains till Dr Beeching stepped in ! I like it too :o)

11 Sep, 2015

I should imagine it would be hard to get to by bus,Julia..If we are ever out that way,,and within easy reach,we will pay a visit. .:o)

11 Sep, 2015

Don't wait until he's older Sandra, take him now! Freya has been twice, and loves it. I'm sure Thomas will too. Make a date for October half-term. :))

11 Sep, 2015

We will see,Julia..it's finding a day when he is free ! Lol such a full diary for a 5 year old..:o)

11 Sep, 2015

The Jorvik Centre is fascinating, have you visited the Castle Museum, I spent ages wandering around the Victorian Street peering into the shops, my family always lose me in these places, I think both Thomas and Russell will really enjoy themselves, my grandson was about Thomas's age when we first took him.
Just saw your comment, all the children lead very busy lives don't they and its not all sitting in front of telly or playing on gadgets.....

11 Sep, 2015

I loved seeing The Shambles again Sandra. We took the boys when they were at primary school mainly to see the Jorvik Centre because one of them was learning about the Vikings at the time.

I really like the black and white timbers and the narrow streets. York is a beautiful city, it really is.

11 Sep, 2015

We went to the Castle Museum a long time ago,Sue..a fascinating place..I'm sure we will get to take Thomas at some point..just finding the right time..He has a better social life than us ! just now he is spending free time at the park at weekends, having found the delights of the Skateboard area on his Scooter.. heart stopping time..! :o)

12 Sep, 2015

I'm sure they were fascinated,Chris. It's much better if they can see it for themselves, and not just read about it..There is such a lovely atmosphere in York..no wonder it is always busy..but not uncomfortably so..x

Our favorite place as well Sandra we saw all the same things when we were there in July the Ghost tour in the evening is brilliant .. I'm glad you enjoyed your lovely week end treat we attempted to walk the walls we only made it half way round when the signs to follow disappeared which meant we took a wrong turn finishing up back where we started ,we went to the tourist office to ask if it was possible to put more signs up on the main road crossings which is where you lose your way ..it wasn't just us other people were stopping to ask locals they had no idea either !! we will see if they have done that another time, maybe x

12 Sep, 2015

I remembered you had been recently Amy,what a shame we weren't there at the same time..
That is quite bad for such a Tourist hotspot, isn't it? especially with all the foreign visitors there, never mind us Yorkshire lot!
We walked round the walls many years ago,but we must have been lucky enough to take the right turning, which is a feat in itself ! Lol...I know you can't walk all the way round,as it stops near the Railway Museum, and then you rejoin near the Minster..same near Cliffords tower,I think..but not entirely sure,as it was a long time ago..

Congratulations to Simon & Clare Carole I'm sure they'll have a lovely time in York ,that year has gone quickly hasn't it , We will try the walk again another time Sandra we crossed a bridge which I don't think we should have done it sent us back the other way :o(

Love this blog Sandra ... our son and d-in-law visited York a few years ago and said we really must go there ... such a lot of historical places and sights to see.

12 Sep, 2015

That was probably it,Amy..a bit confusing when you get to the bridges, but as you said,a tourist signpost would help with that..

12 Sep, 2015

Thank you Shirley..I know you have said before, how much you would like to visit sometime..now's the time, seeing as Micheal is retired..no more excuses ! you will need at least a week to see York and surrounding places :o)

12 Sep, 2015

Lovely interesting blog Bloomer thank you so much for sharing your trip, look forward to the next instalment :o)

Lovely interesting blog and I have learned something new about the Shambles. We have been to York a few times and love it there. So much to see and do. I would like to travel back in time and see what it was like back then in those times....perhaps a bit more smelly than today. No refrigerators, plenty of flies about.....lots of poor people.

13 Sep, 2015

It's truly amazing how the human mind managed to rise above the mountains of excrement, garbage and disease in those days and in some places in the world, these days.

13 Sep, 2015

Thank you Lindak..Something for everyone in York..I don't really fancy going back in time to those days, but we can reflect on how it must have been for them..not just in York, but for most people then.and be thankful for our way of life now.We are so lucky..

13 Sep, 2015

Very belated birthday wishes to Russell ! I love the Shambles ! Its years since I've been there! We have been to York quite a few times , but mostly to the train museum, as you might know ! lol
Rick is starting to build another train room in the large garage Sandra , in between treatments though !

14 Sep, 2015

Thanks Rose,I will pass them on :o) I don't know anyone who doesn't like York, and all it's attractions..
I hope Rick is doing well with his treatment, and getting on nicely with his train room in the Garage..every little and big boy's dream,I should think..:o)

14 Sep, 2015

We will get there one day Sandra ... at the moment I'm nursing a swollen upper arm having been bitten or stung by a critter in the garden on Saturday! Nurse has drawn around the area in black felt tip ... like a very cheap tattoo! Just hope the swelling doesn't go beyond the line she's drawn. :o(

14 Sep, 2015

Oh no,Shirley..I bet that's painful ! sorry, but I had to laugh at your description of the Nurse's artistic flair..Lol..I hope you or Micheal haven't added facial features ,unless you have drawn a smiley face :o) I hope it feels better soon x

14 Sep, 2015

Thanks Sandra, I'm happy to report that the redness has not spread, not lessened either but I'm the tablets will do the trick! The 'tattoo' washed off in the shower, lol!

15 Sep, 2015

That's good news,Shirley..but what a shame you have lost the masterpiece..Looks like you are going to be ok ..:o) x

15 Sep, 2015

Ha ha, Sarah called it the worst fake tattoo she had ever seen! I'm a football widow this evening (no surprises there!) so am catching up on GoY for a while. :o)

15 Sep, 2015

Very slowly Sandra, but it will be his winter hobby ! He is nearly halfway through his treatment with a mixture of good days and bad, but keeps cheerful ! I'll pass your message on ! If you get over here again, you can tell Russell that he can be one of the train drivers ! Hahaa!

15 Sep, 2015

Never having been to York, I enjoyed your blog and photos, thanks Sandra, off to catch up with the next one....

7 Oct, 2015

You might get there one day,Angela..you would love it..thanks for your nice comment :o) x

7 Oct, 2015

Your welcome...its a long way for us to go, and OH would rather drive in France than here!!

8 Oct, 2015

You can probably get to France in the same time it would take to drive to York ! so I don't blame your OH.....

8 Oct, 2015
