New Rockery

Been promising myself a rockery one day, and the day came when I thought my middle bed in the bottom garden had been the same for many years and needed a makeover. So, all the plants and bulbs in the middle part were taken out and stored to go in new homes, the end pieces, because the garden is a strange shape, have been left for the time being as they are just coming into flower. Then with a lot of help from a friend (because I needed a car large enough to carry rocks, we went off to a reclamation yard where I managed to get 8 lovely rocks for a donation to their ‘tea tin’ of £5. I think that was a real bargain as in the garden centres they are at least £5 each ! Bought a bag of gravel to mix in with the soil, and one or two new plants, and hey presto I have my rockery, albeit that it won’t REALLY be finished until the ends are done, and I have left space to go shopping for more plants, so here are a few pictures of what it looks like this morning, plus one or two other pics of the garden.
The next three pics are the new plants I bought, a Lewisia, a Dianthus and a Sedum.
So, onwards to the next project……

really nice job done Cinders, the Lewisia will need protection as winter rain may rot the crown, i have mine planted on it's side which works is yours angled slightly...

Thanks for that SL. I will tilt it a bit more then. I'll remember that and make sure I protect it a bit for the winter.

Thank you Laurum, the pink flowered plant in last pic is Saponaria, commonly known as 'tumbling ted' in my neck of the woods.

What a cracking job youve made of that Cinders. Youll have fun seeking out new plants for it, although it looks really well established already. Your garden looks really pretty and the new rockery blends in really well. If it were me I would be very pleased with myself.

It looks great Cinders and yes it does blend in well, those rocks for that price is darn good, I think they are a ridiculous price at GC`s, makes me wish I could drive I`d head off to the mine in Wales. Your garden is lovely and a credit to you...

Congrats Cinders....! Just saw Amy's pics of her rocks! now I find your blog...lovely, because I've been thinking the same thing about an area in our front yard which is very dry at present and hauling water is just too hard in the heat... You achieved a transformation in a short time and that's what I think I need. It has to happen FAST...lol.

Thanks Lori, for your lovely comments, this spot had been the same for so many years, so it was due a change. So out with all the plants and bulbs. Enjoyed doing it, and pleased with the results.

sorry I don't know how I missed this blog, however its fantastic, you must be so pleased with yourself, and what a bargain for those rocks, did you do it all alone, a lot of work there
30 May, 2012
I did most of it, Alan lifted the rocks for me, thats all. They were a bargain weren't they.

I'm on 'catch-up' this afternoon, Cinders ... so glad I saw this blog as I love what you have done ... proves a change is as good as a rest! ... I paid £6 for two rocks at a local GC a couple of years ago so I think your fiver was definitely money well spent ... :o) ... Also, is it really a year ago that we met up at Dottydaisy's open garden? ... My, the time has flown .......

I'm glad you like what I have done Shirley, I enjoyed doing it I must say and am very pleased with it. Those rocks were certainly a bargain. Yes it really is a year ago that we met, and I am sorry that we can't meet up again this year, but circumstances won't allow. However, when you are better perhaps we can arrange something. Hope Dotty does well.

I'm sure the weather won't have put people off visiting ... gardeners are usually a hardy lot! ... Shall take you up on that, as and when ... :o)
3 Jun, 2012
Look forward to it.

Just my kind of project - it looks great, and so does the rest of your garden. Your new rockery blends very well with what is there already. Really like that.
