I had this recipe given to me over 43 yrs ago, by a 73yr old woman, plus when she gave it me at first everything was in cup measures. All these items make these two cakes, i've just done 16 for my kids and myself, this week.

You are all welcome, i have 6 children so 12 0f them go to them, i keep 4 of them and freeze a couple, my lads like it to take to work with butter on after new year gone, the grandchildren like it with custard on it, me i like it on its own, i have put icing on them before but my lot like them as they are so they can eat it how ever they fancy it.

Lovely Carol....I love black treacle. This is similar to a recipe Ian's Granma gave me in the early 70s...only you boil most of the ingredients. Made on too yesterday...added grated carrot and it's really moist...:o)
Cat your pumpkin and cranberry sounds really tasty, and I love Banana bread, we had this when we went to see Jim in Oz...:o)

I love the fact that they are freezable, Clarice!! I feel a big baking session coming on with the children on the next lousy weather day off. :-))

More cakes Clarice and they look deloicious too. We have three different occasions at church this week if they don't get cancelled where I have to do a bit of baking, but one can't do much else either watch the telly, cook, paint or use one's artistic talents in knitting sewing etc this weather.
It's really really cold and the temperature has just dropped to minus 10. BRRR!!! Stil it's nice to be able to share on GOY and thanks for the recipe. x

6 Dec, 2010

Mmmmmm must give this a go. I hope it's not as addictive as Shirleytulips plum cakes lol:-)

6 Dec, 2010

Jane i have another fruit cake mix where you boil most of it , Linda i use to do loads of knitting when my lot where little and i did it for grandchildren, but now days the younger ones would rather have shop ones. David enjoy your baking day, Bornagain have to be honest and say yes it is addictive, thats one reason i freeze it aswell stops me eating them and being greedy :o))

6 Dec, 2010

I made a plum cake today, guess what I'm making tomorrow:-))))

6 Dec, 2010

Gosh Carol 16 cakes you have beaten my record hands down, they look delicous must try out your recipe for myself!

6 Dec, 2010

Thanks Clarice,
I too will certainly try this recipe. My family were fond of my mother's "barabrith" a welsh recipe.
I am "feeding" my Christmas cake, but not too often!

7 Dec, 2010

That looks out of this world!
I'm bookmarking this for next year's growing season to see how it will turn out with all of the ingredients grown organically. Mummmm, I can taste it already!

Thanks girls.

8 Dec, 2010

Hello you top cooks\0/ I made my first ever Christmas cake a couple of weeks or so ago. I plumped the dried fruit with rum and 'fed' it with rum which I thought would make a change. Today I've apricot jammed and marzipanned it. Have I done it too soon? Also until today i've wrapped it in foil and put in big plastic storage box which I am not sure is 100 % airtight. how should I keep it ok now and also once I've iced it? I've cheated and bought some dr oetkar? icing, when should I ice it? Lots of question I'm afraid:-).

Thanks Clarice, I'll ice it tomorrow and hope for the best:-)

12 Dec, 2010
