Red Arrows - I caught the ‘tail’ end of their practise session.

I was driving back from Lincoln the other day, and lo and behold, I spotted the Red Arrows in the middle of one of their practise runs. I was driving along the long straight Sturton-by-Stow road, almost at RAF Scampton. I couldn’t find anywhere to pull over!!!! Finally I found somewhere, but, sadly there were almost finished and then as soon as I snapped a couple of pics, they were setting down at the base. I must’ve looked like some daft tourist 😆
I’ve seen them many times, all over the UK. They are always wonderful to catch sight of, no matter how often.
I do have some amazing photos of them from previous displays.

I do find the drive through and along the Lincolnshire countryside very therapeutic, especially, if I’ve had a stressful day 😊

Great captures Kate, and what glorious weather you’re having on my birthday!

My husband, a RAF helicopter pilot told me they’re closing down RAF Scampton next year. Also he’s had the privilege to have worked with the Red Arrows, flying pilots to different locations during their display season and getting the occasional bonus ride! He’s like a little kid in a sweet shop- so excited!! Thought I’d share- hope you don’t mind.

Happy birthday wishes, Sheila!!! Sorry it’s late! I hope you’ve managed to enjoy your special day! Thank you for your message.
Thank you Julia, seems like most men are!!! My OH loves anything to do with a aviation too,- or motorbikes!
Amsterdam, your husband is right, they are moving the red arrows to another base aren’t they? Somewhere not too far I think? Waddington was mentioned.Yes, that’s right, they said Scampton is closing. Sounds like he’s had some interesting times with his job!!!! I’m pretty sure it was his childhood dream come true!
Eileen, many thanks. You’ll see plenty of scenic views on your motorbike!
Thanks Shirley, ☺️

I just love the Red Arrows ( possibly even more than gardening!!! ) and have seen their displays a number of times.
How very exciting for you to suddenly spot them!
I hope that next year their displays can start up again!

That’s saying something Chris, if you ‘may’ love them more than gardening! I’m pleased I posted now. I’m disappointed I couldn’t find a little rest stop quick enough to catch them close up! So frustrating. I have to agree, I hope once they settled at Waddingham, they’ll be back on track and exciting us again! ☺️ X

Wonderful photo's Kate, and you were so lucky to get those shots, and with a beautiful clear sky too.We love the Red Arrows too.We are interested in Aviation,as my OH's step son was in the RAF,and has been a volunteer at the S,Yorkshire Air museum, for a number of years, and is the home of the Lancaster Bomber, which is what he mainly works on to preserve it.We were privileged to have a day out there,as a Birthday treat ,and my husband was allowed to be in the cockpit,as it taxied down the runway. to be honest,it was the prize in a raffle, but strangely enough,he won ! I wonder why ? lol.
We were sad to see Scampton is to close too :o( .

Wow, that's amazing Kate and awesome against the blue sky. How they manage to maintain formation at such speed baffles me. The best of the best.

Thanks Paul! It was a gorgeous day - Tuesday this past week. I was very fortunate. I did spot the bird once I’d transferred it to the iPad. Think you may be right, could be a buzzard.

Thank you kindly, Bloomer! I definitely was lucky to see them on such a nice day with clear, blue skies and sunshine.
I’ll bet OH’s step son loved his job! It would have been exhilarating! Now, volunteering at the museum, well, he’s probably in his element! He’ll have a wealth of knowledge to pass on too! I can only imagine getting to be part of preserving the Lancaster bomber must be a dream come true!
Also, I’m sure your husband was like a little boy in a sweet shop when he was sat in that cockpit and being taxied along the runway! Fantastic!!!

Thank you, really appreciate your message, Paul!! Yes, it’s amazing how they actually manage to coordinate and fly in formation so fantastically well!!!
Best of wishes to you 😊

How wonderful, we all love the Reds and have seen them many times, my hubby follows them avidly, since his retirement we treated ourselves to a motorhome, he was so looking forward to spending more days at Scampton , hoping to get that perfect shot, (Covid 19 locked us in two days after we got it) locally rumours are rife that they are coming to Wittering, wishful thinking methinks, people still miss seeing the Harriers and they've been gone a fair while now, like you we think it will be Waddington.....

21 Dec, 2020

Kate we have stayed on a farm many times near there and have watched them practice overhead I remember putting a blog on about it many years ago one in particular where they were making heart shapes in the sky . your photos are wonderful ..

Brilliant pictures Kate and a nice change to think of something other than covid! You captured them well!
We live in east Lincolnshire so haven't really seen them. They used to fly over on certain " show" days but is always too busy to get near enough to see them!
Happy Christmas and best wishes for the New Year!

Great photos Kate! Yes I'm a Lincolnshire lass too and have enjoyed seeing them over the years especially from the viewing point on the way to Scampton, where they come up from the valley and fly straight overhead, just wonderful..:))

Had some nice lunches at the Dambusters in Scampton amidst all the WWII artefacts and a forties crooner singing too, really atmospheric.

I remember your blog Amy, that's a while ago!

Have a lovely Christmas Kate x

You did well to quickly get them snaps, blue sky eh seems along time since I have seen it, when’s it going to stop raining, we had the spitfire in the summer which did a quick flypast at all the hospitals round the country to thank the NHS, I was working in s garden near to the hospital mowing a lawn and it was due at twenty seven minutes past ten, the mowing I stopped and waited for that fantastic engine sound then I heard it faintly then from no where it appeared banking over the garden to the hospital truly amazing so I understand the mad tourist thing, it just gets you, one of those moments that gives the goosebumps, wishing you all a happy Christmas and new year.

Reading your text Julien, yes I get goose bumps too and feel quite emotional when I see any military planes, especially those from WWII. We have a pair of Ospreys that fly over my garden in an afternoon. Sometimes their blades are forward and sometimes facing upwards. The other day there was such a loud helicopter sound, then a Chinook slowly flew over...

Thanks kindly for your comments, Lincslass, Amy, Rose, Janey and Julien. All very lovely too!
It is really nice to be distracted isn’t it, away from covid and brexit and all the worrying issues at the moment.
Lincslass, I’ll bet you both get a lot of enjoyment out of your motorhome, it’s a pity though this virus has put a dampener on your travels this year..
Amy, I’ll have to look for your blog and have a read!
Rose, it’s a lovely county you and Lincslass live in..I’m fortunate to travel from another lovely county over the Humber bridge most days to enjoy the scenery..
That’s right, Janey, you live there too! I remember you’re near to Appleby/Winterton area..it’s a pretty drive around there too. I love all the 40s era-related things, like you mentioned!
Julien and Janey, I know exactly what you both mean..the sound of those engines! We had a spitfire fly over during the summer too, I wonder if it was countrywide. Fabulous to see and hear! I was extremely lucky it was a beautiful day last week, Julien..albeit I caught them at the end of their practise!!!!! Sadly.
Saying that, I’ve many more pics of them up close, always a delight to see them.
Goosebumps most definitely, you’re right!
