Tidying up

On Saturday I went outside and had a bit of a clear up. I looked around for any casualties of the Arctic weather and thankfully I only found one, a Cordyline Australis `rubra` which is, was, a bit tender anyway. I`m surprised it came through last Winter seeing as how we had some really low temperatures but this year must have been a cold spell to far and it just keeled over, despite being well protected.
I was delighted to see a couple of Snowdrops coming up after I`d almost given up on them, in fact bulbs are springing up all over the garden….smashing!
This Sarcococca hookeriana humilis, is just outside the kitchen door so we get its sweet scent every time we walk past.
White Hellebore
Another white Hellebore with an Aqualegia growing right in the middle! The Aquilegia didn`t flower last year but hopefully it will soon and then I will know for sure which variety it is.
I`m pleased to see new growth on Heuchera `Peach Flambe`, it dies down quite a bit in Winter so its good to see it coming back again.
I usually keep the growth of this acer compact but since our neighbours have built an unsightly breeze block wall which is higher than our fence panels, I`m going to let it grow as high as it likes to cover the eyesore. Its a beautiful plant and should do the job nicely.
I treated myself to yet another Heuchera, `Gypsy Dancer` this time. It wasn`t in any sale but I liked it. As it happens I`ve just ordered some more from Plantagogo but more about them later!
After much clearing of wet, dead foliage the garden didn`t really look much different but I had a full trug of garden debris to tip in the green wheelie bin, quite a satisfying hours work I think. I also managed to clear away lots of bindweed `cables` where our fence had come down. I suppose our neighbour has done me a favour of sorts because he wouldn`t dream of clearing any away himself. I just hope I`ve done enough to keep it at bay for at least a couple of months.
The next thing I must do is bring the heated propagater in from the shed and get started sorting out which seeds I`ll be planting. How nice to know that Spring really isn`t that far away! :o)

Oh, sorry to see the Cordyline didn't survive the cold weather but lovely to see the buds and shoots developing all ready for another year. : o )

I've just asked a question about Cordylines - ours are quite tall but the snow and continuing low temps have caused havoc with them - I've been advised to 'wait and see' but it sounds as if I'll be cutting them down if only to the level of any new shoots! As for the rest of our small garden - it's def. a question of keeping fingers, toes and everything else crossed!

Twiggy ~Perhaps mine would have been alright if I cut it to ground level but I`m sure I`ll find something to plant in its place, I`m not sure it was ever happy in my garden! :o)

I have been doing the same,today,Sandra..it feels good to start on the tidying up,and it is great to see signs of life again.
Fingers crossed,It seem as though everything has survived...I lost my Phormium a couple of years ago,so I try to stick to plants I don't have to worry about losing..and a good excuse to buy something else :o))

Does make you feel better to get going again doesnt it Labdancer..I went around mine telling it to get into gear again..must admit my daylilies seem to have got something out of this cold weather, they are all sprouting like mad as are my iris sibirica. The Sarcacocoa is a new one on me..never heard of it..must google.

It's very encouraging to see your bulbs sprouting into bloom...it helps to make spring seem not so far off! Nice heuchera that you've purchased and also good that the one you have already is putting out new growth.
My garden is still topsoil and mud so no chance of me doing anything as yet. I have some bulbs planted in a pot but there are no "sprouts" as yet...it will be so nice to see them when they make an appearance :)
