Look whats arrived!

When I got home from work I was delighted to see a parcel behind one of the wheelie bins, my plants had arrived from Platagogo and I couldn`t wait to open it.

Heucheras Cascade Dawn, Fire Chief and Amber Waves.

Blood Red, Bronze Beauty and Tiramasu.

They are very healthy but quite young plants and I was advised to keep them in their pots for the next few weeks. I`ve put them on a low shelf in the greenhouse where its both cool and shady and well protected from the elements.
Its been a good day for plants because I managed to get 5 Verbena Bonariensis for 50p each, what a bargain! They had suffered a bit of frost damage which is why I got them cheap but theres lots of new foliage coming through so they`ll be fine. I`ve put them in the greenhouse where they can keep the new Heucheras company.

Oh I am turning green with envy !! Lovely Heuchera.
I really mustnt buy any more at the moment. Hoping to get some from Vicky when I go to Harrogate Show. You are going to have a lovely time soon planting all those up.

I bet you can't wait to plant them, have you decided where the plants are going?

Lovely selection of plants....now just to sort out where you can put them in the garden. Heucheras are so pretty :)

Lovely selection of Heucheras, the leaves on the Bronze Beauty look huge!! Once you've got those Verbenas, you'll have them self seeding forever, and lots of Bees & Butterflies on them too. : o ))

Just to warn you, 'Amber Waves' is not a particularly tough heuchera when it comes to the winter. I fnd I need to put it under cold glass but then it survives OK - I think it is the combination of cold AND wet that it has trouble coping with

Very nice Heuchera`s, I only have one here, bit daft really because I love to see them, pleased to say my Verbena`s are spreading quite nicely as well...

Great plants Ldancer, and they certainly brighten up a winter garden!

3 nice plants there Sandra. Good idea to keep them in pots for now.
My only one got killed off by the bad weather in the winter.

I bought 6 Heucheras last Autumn lost everyone but one, must buy some more and I will stick them in the new toy (sorry greenhouse) for the winter. I love the different colours of the leaves, must go out and spend again.

Im really surprised at your Heucheras dying off in the winter. Mine have absolutely thrived! Even the Kimono, which looked pretty awful is growing anew. I thought our winter in the west was bad...yours must have been terrible! I must admit I had pretty sizeable roots on mine but I did think the ones in the pots might have had it, but they sailed through! The only thing I lost in a pot were my alstroemeria Orange Supreme, but the ones in the ground are fine.

Very nice selection of plants you've got.

TT - On a couple of nights we were minus 18 degrees, blooming coldest I have ever known.

Cinders ~ I knew you`d love them seeing as you as mad about them as me! :o)

Andrew~ thanks for the tip about Amber Waves, I`ll bear that in mind. :o)

Olive & Hywel, sorry to hear about the heucheras but it has been an extremely cold winter. Hope you both try again with them this year. :o)

Shirley ~ I have one Verbena but it did self seed at all unfortunately, hopefully with six of them the odds are better for this year. Bronze Beauty does have big leaves and its described as an `architectual` (?) shape. I take that to mean it will really stand out. :o)

Lincslass~ You really must get some more Heucheras, I don`t know what I`d do without mine...lol! :o)

Sandra, Teds and Whistonlass, I can`t wait to plant them and I know exactly where each one is going! :o)

PS: I`m already thinking about which ones I`m going to buy next...I`m a hopeless case...lol!

Dont think we hit that low, Oliveoil, about -12 I think..I would guess that extra 6 degrees is what did it then! I know I hibernated for about a week..and thats very unusual for me!

18 Mar, 2011

One of Oh friends about 4 miles from us recorded -19 degrees on his outside thermometer

Thats Arctic! especially for Lincolnshire!

Lovely plants LD! I too lost several heucheras this winter, mainly cos of the excess moisture I fear. I am going to pot the others up and try to give them some tlc . Maybe from now on I will grow them in pots so I can protect them in the bad weather. Lets hope we have a good summer this year...

I really hope so RM, two bitter Winters in a row is more than enough for me! A really good Summer would be wonderful...:o)
