Raining AGAIN!

I`m know I`m not alone in wishing the drier warmer weather would return quickly. It`s really cold at the moment and it feels more like Winter again here. On Saturday, my birthday, Jim and I spent all day in the garden…well Sunday too actually. I finished the weeding and Jim finished widening the border for me. It was quite a job really because even though he`d dug out the old turf he still had to move the edging stones, dig over and clear the ground and replace the stones. He did all that and added bags of blended farm manure and topsoil and we finally had lots of room for more plants…wonderful! Then we searched the garden for spare edging stones, we`d used some for all sorts of things, and added them to the border edges that as yet didn`t have any edging…are you keeping up? My goodness I do ramble at times…lol! I also moved some smaller plants ie: Aquilega, Geums and Dianthus to the front of the border and I now have to think what I need to fuill in the gaps once the Summer plants are in. I even found something growing next to the Cordyline Australis and I was puzzled as to what it was. All I could see were some green shoots and to my knowledge there was nothing planted in that part of the bed. I enlarged that area last year and we poured on farm manure and topsoil galore. Then today it dawned on me, its a Hellebore. There used to be one there until two years ago when it seemed to die off. I remember cutting off the leaves and left it to its own devices. It didn`t show up last year and after all the digging I assumed I had seen the last of it as any plant there couldn`t have survived. Well this one did though I have no idea how it could have. The new shoots are really big now and it looks a very strong plant. I might be lucky and get some flowers this year.

Anyway, the garden looked lovely and it felt really good that all our hard work was worthwhile. The family were over and I was opening cards and presents with dirty hands all morning. The only downside of the day was my four yr old grandson Roman who wasn`t very well and spent most of the day under a blanket on the sofa. We decided not to go for a meal but to stay in and have a takeaway but we still had a lovely evening. In the morning Roman was much better and he came outside and watched me weed and asked me lots of questions like do worms bite, why do the wriggle, which end is its head and why are they good for the garden! He certainly helped pass the time as weeding isn`t my favourite outdoor task.

Here are a few photos from the weekend.

My birthday cake that my son Danny had made for me. It was a very light sponge with strawberries and kiwi fruit on top, fresh cream in layers in the sponge itself, on the top and around the sides. Decorated with chocolate flakes and sprinkles. It was delicious and must have had zillions of calories but it was my special cake and my special day so who cared…lol!

The first half done.

All finished along this side

This Aucuba variagata does look a bit small at the moment but it was being thrown away at work so I rescued it. There is nothing wrong with it apart from being a poor shape which was soon remeded with the secateurs.

The Brunnera is flowering nicely again this year.

Perry contentedly munching on a dental chew. He seems to have realised that the borders and my plants are out of bounds to him.

Perry gently sniffing my 11mth old granddaughter Sophie, he has really taken a liking to her and is very careful around her.

I`ve just bought a few more border stones from work and I also treated myself to a Lonicera Halliana. I wanted Honeysuckle to grow up one of the trellises at the back of the garden, it will flower throughout Summer and into Autumn so with luck I`ll have a nice display, if not this year then next. Some of my geraniums that I`ve grown from plugs have died back but I`ve still got lots left. My tomatoes are growing their second set of leaves and the red peppers and Jalopenos are doing really well. All I need now is some warmer, sunnier weather and I can move my baby plants to the greenhouse along with the begonias that are really big now.. Also because of all the digging at the weekend the lawn is in a dreadful state, not helped of course by the rain. I must do something to at least make it look a bit better.

That cake looked delicious Sandra, sounds like a busy weekend went on at your place and its obvious Perry is enjoying his new life, shame your grandson was unwell and hope you answered his questions properly, I know from experience that grandchildren do not like to be fobbed off with any answer . Your borders look neat and tidy, although if you have the same conditions as us then I guess they are swimming at the moment..
