Garden On a Cliff..The Minack Theatre...

Unfortunately we couldn’t get tickets to see a performance but we did get to visit, its absolutely amazing, planned, built and financed by Rowena Cade a truly remarkable woman with determination and obviously nerves of steel and a head for heights…..
Her story is fascinating but to tell it here would take too long however one can read all about her and the Minack at www.minack.com
I’ll just show the photo’s..
The route up was typical Cornwall, luckily we only had to back up once on this particular journey up the usual very narrow roads, piece of cake, lol….On leaving the carpark we had what by comparison could be called a gentle uphill meander through the start of the gardens towards the entrance..

Then down and thinking how attractive it looked..

Going down..

Down..

Like these people we stopped to admire the view and take our photo’s, still meandering although a tad steeper!!!!!!!
Long way down isn’t it!!!!!

Plenty of lovely plants to drool over….

Keep going Susie, you can do it!!!!!

“Mum it will be over halfway when we get down there so lets have our picnic over on the grass seats” which really meant, “I’m starving so lets eat”LOL

All the while we were climbing down this helicopter had been attracting a lot of attention coming and going, still don’t know whether it was a training session or a genuine rescue but they achieved their aim whilst we were watching, so well done to them.

Righty Ho!! adrenalin kicks in and down we go again…Now at this point my girl decides its in my own interest to not carry on going down the same route, “It looks easier to go across the top and down the other side”

Okey Dokey says muggins, so thats the way I went down, twisting and turning, nowt to hold onto with my heart in my mouth, Rowena must have been a tall lady and those steps weren’t easy for the physically challenged when it comes to height, lol, reaching the bottom Sherryl stands there waiting, laughing her cotton socks off.
"How in the hell did you get here first "?? was my reaction on reaching her and finding I didn’t have jelly legs after all.
“Oh sorry” says she “it was easier the other way after all but I didn’t want to shout you in case you fell” aren’t daughters thoughtful sometimes, lol…

Engravings everywhere to commemorate past productions..

One special one, the only one done in granite to a special person who helped Rowena create this masterpiece for many years..

Of course we had to have a pic of both of us taking a turn on the stage.

I even had a balcony scene, lol….

After my act of bravery tackling those flipping steps on my own I felt it was my right…..
Then it was time to make our way upwards and a few more pics of this garden on a cliff on the way

Oh Boy!!! nearly there and I need my latte….

Now after all that you would have thought any sane person would have returned to the car and drove somewhere.
Nope!!!!!! remember that lovely beach we could see in the cove..

Well we legged it up and over the clifftop and down the other side..

Sherryl had a swim, dopey me had no costume so had to make do with a paddle..
Have to say she did redeem herself for making me tackle all those steps by walking all the way up that road back to the carpark, its twice as far as can be seen in the pics and uphill all the way, whilst I had a cuppa in the cafe ..
Here comes Sherryl in Little Blue..

Bless her cotton socks, LOL..

Now thats what you call a good days exercise….

Oh my word! What a trek! But what a place!!!! Well worth it, and the beach.....heavenly! I must go and read your link...what a place! I am so exited by that theatre and those views. Well done both of you! As you got near the theatre all I could think about was the prospect of you having to go back up again, and I was hoping for a cable car to take you the return journey, but you made it on your own strength....well done ladies!

Wow! what a fantastic place!! The gardens, theatre, and views...wonderful! Your photos are great. All I could think of as I followed you down was...you've got to climb all that way back up!! Super beach and a well deserved paddle and a latte.

The plants remind me of Tresco Abbey Gardens. Nice and level there.

I was thinking exactly the same, lol well done Lincslass, what an amazing place. Didn't do this one when we went to Cornwall but we did do Bedruthan Rocks, Steps and Beach and that was a step nearly too far for me. lol. You have some lovely photos and memories you can treasure for a long time. Lovely place Cornwall, might go again some day, but will not be tackling those steep steps. lol.

Great blog. And it looks to be really interesting place to visit. Reminded me of the Curium amphitheater in Cyprus where I saw many a Shakespeare play performed during my army tour there.

Wonderful blog Lincs, and well done you for tackling that steep climb. Doubt if I could do it now, but would love to have done that. What a fantastic place.

I read the Lady's story, and my, she was one determined chick!

What a wonderful place to visit :) You were brave to tackle it lol ....

Isn't it fabulous, I loved it even though I was nervous going down, its because I only have one good eye, I have to take my glasses off or the steps seem to dance, lol, going up was a doddle actually and those plants really got me going, we also did Tintagel, I did it last year on my own as Derek is scared of heights plus he cannot tackle things like that since he had his heart attack, it was a treat to have company this time and St Michaels Mount, plus lots of cliff walks.
Karen I'm pleased you found her story, there is a book that she wrote herself apparently so I'm hoping to find it....

Thank you so much for this. I have read all Doreen Toveys books about Minack (and her cats) so really wanted to see the theatre when we drove past one day on holiday. There wasn't time - but if I'd known it was so wonderful we would jolly well have made time!!

I don't think OH and I have the knees for it any more, sad to say.

Wow what a blog bet someone had aching legs the next day lol but must have been absolutely worth it .

What a beautifully rugged coastline dotted with quiant coastal towns and cove beaches. I have seen nothing to rival this in the US. Are the narrow roads that I see typical of the area and are they one way traffic or two way?

26 Jul, 2014

Oh,what lovely memories it brings back,of that wonderful coastline,Sue..There is no way I could tackle that walk back up,from Minack..so we have never had the pleasure of seeing it at close quarters..many thanks for showing us this wonderful place..what a woman she was,to build all that..Your daughter was so thoughtful in going to get the car for you..previous suggestion of an easier walk for you, long forgotten ,I guess..:o)

Loosestrife the answer is yes the majority of roads are like that, turnig and twisting, some are even narrower than the one you see on here, they are two way traffic, there are however passing places which means tucking your car into the hedgerows which often are so tall both sides its like driving through a living tunnel, hoping there isn't a wall tucked away behind the greenery, its great fun driving backwards up those steep hills, we had to do that for over half a mile one evening to let a tractor and trailer go past, there was no way he could reverse down the hill or even consider it.
The locals think its comical watching the tourists biting their lips and obviously praying as they conduct these manouvres..LOL.....

26 Jul, 2014

Driving backwards for that long up hill? Someone over there must be making a bundle on transmission repair!

I remember going here Dottie a very..... very..... long time ago and Gerry lost his wallet. We went to see a play one evening and there were people picnicking on the steps. We were due to fly by helicopter the next day to the Scilly isles and so we phoned the people at the Minnack, and they found the wallet, but we had to go without it to the Scilly isles and lasted all day on very little money, then went to retrieve the wallet when we got back.

Loosetrife I think it is time you came over here rather than just looking at us on line! Lots of wonderful places to see - the coast of Devon, Cornwall and Pembrokeshire is similar to the Minack photos in lots of places for a start. You could make up an itinerary based on info from here!

27 Jul, 2014

Cornwall would be a good place to start since I wouldn't have to get use to driving on the other side of the road from what I see. LOL:)

27 Jul, 2014

Cornwall is a lovely place, we haven't been there for a while now Lincslass (sorry I called you Dottie)......We used to go camping near Land's End. Yes the lanes are narrow, like a few here in Derbyshire, and the farmer's tractors are a lot bigger now from what they used to be too.

28 Jul, 2014

Pembrokeshire has narrow lanes too and fabulous scenery but you still have to remember about driving on the left when you meet somebody coming the other way!
(The very narrow lanes have passing places every so often)

I enjoyed the views and the tour. You a a brave woman to take on those stairs. Your sense of humor made me smile. Thanks for sharing...I need a cuppa now!
