Wren update 2

Hi all, After not seeing any sign of the wren for the last 2 days, I thought I was going to have to tell you all it was a dummy nest……but…….Today…..a little Blue ~Tit started scuttling around the Ceanothus, and then started pecking at the nest entrance and pinching the moss and flying off to one of the other nest boxes we have. The 2nd time it came back, all hell broke out…The wren was actually in ther nest and then another came swooping in from no where and saw the Blue~Tit off

So I have spent the day outside the back door keeping an eye on them, and everytime the Blue~ Tit come down to pinch more moss I have to stand up and it makes it vear away….. I know I cant stop the natural events of nature, but I shall do my damdest to keep these wrens safe and secure. The wren seems to have settled back in safely, and all seems calm again…. The Tits will have to find their nesting material elsewhere……Needless to say I will be up early in the morning ……..Watching……….

Now I have a vision of you in a Uniform to show your authority as to which birds are allowed to enter your zone ! Fantastic photos. A great way to start m day. : o ) )

Well done milky I would do the same, you cannot stand by when you can help a little.

I have been trying to watch two nests but at the minute it is Magpies two Blackbird and Collared dove nil as they both have lost an egg, they are still nesting so I will continue to keep watching. It is not as intense as your watch Milky as there are plenty of the Blackbirds and Collared doves around but your Wren is rare hope you can keep them safe.

Think you have got yourself a full time job there but good luck to the little wrens.

You make a good ' look-out ' Milky , I hope they appreciate what you are doing for them , dare you leave your sentry post , looks like your weekend will be spent on guard duty and baby sitting .. :o))

I might see another side to this story - I remember someone saying the wrens were hogging a whole lot of fake nests - in which case I would be inclined to say serves them right !

26 Mar, 2010

Not at all Gurthbruins......The Blue tits are welcome to use the "fake ones" if they wish....just leave this one alone.....

How exciting Maureen so much drama going on, love your pictures they give a real closeup view of something only a few ever get to see ;0)

I think I'll have to get up earlier in the morning to catch the birds, don't seem to hear them just now, they used to wake me up in the morning, maybe need to get to bed earlier or stop reading till late.

This is better than the TV soaps, Milky. Love, violence and someone to intervene when necessary! Hope all has gone well today.

maybe a lack of moss after our bad winter, have you any moss you can scatter around to detere bluetits from the wrens maureen, mind you i wouldnt worry as wrens are very terratorial and will win the fight im sure

Well done you seeing off the squatters. Was the small print when you were whispering? Or just Gremlins in your pc? This is turning into a right old saga. do you sit near the nest with a blanket round you and a flask of liquid to keep out the cold? lol. Enough of the inquisition look forward to next installment. Love Sue x

Ha Thanks all for youe comments. Sandra...there is plenty of moss around, in fact our last 2 months have been so wet that our lawn is desperate for some moss killer on it, but we are waiting until the birds have all finished making their nests first. Grannysue, we have a lean~to all the way along the back of the house which is about 12 feet wide and the nest is about 2 feet outside of that, so I am sitting quite near and that doesnt seem to bother them at all. In fact this morning Mr Wren has been here a couple of times with a beak full of food, but I didnt have the camera to hand today Never mind, theres another day tomorrow.....

27 Mar, 2010

wow thats close maureen lucky you, i wouldnt get a thing done all day lol

27 Mar, 2010

Sounds like exciting times, Milky. Make sure your camera is charged up and ready to hand when the family expands :)

Well done, Milky! You're a great hero now in the Wren world!!! ;-) You've done very, very well to get such fantastic close up photos of your Wren couple! I've never seen such close up pictures before in my life of Wrens.

Looking forward to hearing about the offspring & seeing some pics of them.

Just found this blog, what a kerfuffle, hope you have sorted those tits, poor Mrs Wren.......looking forward to the next installment Milky.

Thanks Dotty...the tits dont seem to bother them now but the Robins have had a little go since trying to pinch the moss. Mr Wren soon saw him off, but you should have heard the noise. You certainly cant miustake Mr Wren when he is around
