The garden in April

After seeing some of your lovely pictures of your gardens in April, I thought it was time I started having a walk around ours. I seem to have been so busy with the allotment that the gardens here are getting neglected. So I was amazed when i saw how much colour there was and would like to share it with you.

One of my favourites, Exchorda " The Bride"

Malus " Red Sentinel " whose blossom has been really lovely this year.

There are bluebells and then….

there are white ones!

New this year. I love yellow tulips.

Viburnham Davidii

Viburnham Tinus

Viburnham Mariesii with my lovely geese who were a present from my son and his wife.

I love the way the flowers on this shrub stand erect from the stem and it has a lovely tiering habit which improves every year.

I know the Lamium can be a nuisance but it makes a great ground cover and as a bonus, you get these lovely yellow flowers.

I know you will have seen the Euphorbias on here before, but couldn’t resist showing them again as they have grown so huge. They started life off in one pot in our last house and I split them up into 9 little plants and they moved with us. Over the years they seem to have “marched” all around the garden.

A close up of the Euphorbia.

The bay tree looks healthy this year and has little flowers on it. I was given it 14 years ago as a little cutting and slowly over the years trained it as a standard.

Choisya Ternata . I nearly lost this in 2010 when we had the really bad winter and had to cut one side completely down to the ground , so I’m pleased to see it back in flower this year. I think my garden furniture needs a coat of paint, don’t you think!

Disappointingly, my tree Peony hasn’t produced many flowers this year. It was full last year, so perhaps its having a rest! Lol.

Sweet Rocket “Hesperis Matronalis” which seems to be in flower very early this year. This self seeds around the garden , but is not invasive.

Choisya Sundance really brightens up the garden on a dull day.

These are the new tulips in the empty path border which I am redoing after removing all the old lavenders last year. Just another little job then!

I’m really pleased to see this winter Jasmine in flower as it all got knocked off the wall in that bad winter and totally snapped in half. I cut it right back and here it is again.

Heuchara “Chocolate Ruffles” and I think the other is “H. Marmalade”. What do you think, Karensue?

I can’t believe how far on the Phlox and the Lilies are this year.

The flowers on the Viburnham Carlessii have the most beautiful fragrance which hits you when you get in its vicinity and seems to perfume the air.

Phew! I bet you’re thinking, how many more are there, so I thought I’d finish with this one of Minnie and Mickey who walked round the garden with me and for all of you that didn’t give up and go and get a cuppa , thankyou for persevering.

I enjoyed taking a walk around your garden Rose, you have some lovely plants and shrubs, I don`t normally like being around geese without a fence between us but yours look quite safe, its nice to see you also have company in the garden...

Hi Rosy! You kept that Euphorbia quiet! Do you think it's polychroma? I've just sent for seeds of it today! Oh no! Yet another coincidence! Lol! If this horrible weather lets up soon you'll be able to plant up your pathway, have you got your plants hardened off yet?

Thanks Stickie, I have the job of deciding what to put in this border now. Just another little job to add to my list!lol.
Thanks Terra for your lovely comments. Thanks Dawnsaunt, I especially love the viburnhams. Ojibway, if you have the room , its worth buying.I love this viburnham the most out of them all.Thankyou ,we love our garden. Thanks Lincs, I don't think I would like to be near geese either so its a good job these are not real! Apparently, they make good guard dogs. I wouldn't argue with one! lol.I'm glad you enjoyed the walk. Thanks Sheilar, it was after seeing your blog that prompted me to have a walk round mine.
Thanks Shirley, the cats are always there. The minute I get the camera out, they seem to appear. They must like having their picture took!Lol. Scottish, I will let you know what that shrub is as soon as I can find out. I bought it years ago and have lost the label. I even went through my encyclopedia gardening book, but couldn't find it. I do believe they have it at our local nursery so will send you a p.m. when I find out. Thanks Karen and Michaella. I love shrubs. You get so much interest from them all year round and best of all they look after themselves! Thanks Dwyllis , the Euphorbia is lovely although it does tend to take over. I think yellow is one of my favourite colours in the garden. Thanks Hywel , it will look even better when I get your Veronicas in! Oh you and your big words Elizabeth. I thought I was the one having senior moments as the Euphorbias have been on my blogs a few times!Lol. I'm having a job getting them all hardened off with the change in temperature all the time. You better have the sunshine on order when we come!

Have just read your blog. What a lovely selection of plants , very well photographed. Love the Viburnum Mariesii . Looks a real cracker of a shrub. How much space does it need? Am in the process of clearing one area of my garden and replanting and that shrub is very tempting.

Hi Rose, it looks very pretty your garden in April. Lovely plants all around it. I too like your Viburnum Mariesii it is lovely. I like the way the flowers stand upright from the leaves. Lovely blog.

Hallo Inverglen, nice to meet you, so to speak! The Mariessii like all the viburnhams will grow as big or as wide as you let it, so it should fit in happily anywhere if you are prepared to prune it, but saying that, as it has a tiering habit , you need to have the room for it to spread. As you can see from the photo, it spreads higher up and so doesn't take much garden up at the bottom Mine has been in the garden for about 10 years and the width around it at the bottom is about 5 foot square. Hope that helps and thanks for your comments.
Hello Barbara, thanks for your lovely comments. Its unusual to see flowers upright like this , isn't it. Have you got room for one in your lovely garden?

1 May, 2012

I think I could just about squeeze one in somewhere, lol. Will have to have a think about it Rose.

Rose - Thanks re shrub - just whenever - knowing my luck it won't grow up here!!

I will find the name Scottish as its bothering me and its on the tip of my tongue! isn't it annoying.
Barbara, I'm sure you'll find room. You could always have a change around with some of your other plants!
