quary bank mill

hi guys,
well baz decided to book a couple of days off this week so we could have days out, great i thought so decided to go to quary bank mill at wilmslow and wasnt sure about the second day.
anyway isnt it just tipical as it got nearer to this week i recieved an appointment to go to hospital wednesday for a test so thats one of our days out gone, then baz`s car failed M.O.T which ment taking his car to preston to get the work done which ment today grrrr.
so we planned to get to preston at 9am but guess what…. we over slept till 9.10, didnt get to preston till after 10am, then baz had to go into a full length discussion on the ins and outs of an austin 1300,, boring boring,
are we going to quary bank mill i asked,, yes he said, lets go, anyway before setting off he asked his mate what time do you close which was 4.30pm, ;o((
so off we set and got there about 1pm after stopping for something to eat in a nearby pub, so we had in total 2hours to look round the mill and gardens, oh my god,,, anyway the mill was great to see and watching the old way of making cotton and imagining how it must have been all them machines working in them small rooms, the noise and no health and safety, no wonder children got injured and adults to.
the greg family which owned the mill were good employers compared to alot and even had his own doctor come into the mill once a month to give check up to make sure all staff were fit to work, with disease as it was in them days, also he had a dentist to take care of workers teeth problems,
the children very rarely got paid in the mils but greg would go round each day and place a sixpenny bit for the children which were called the scavengers, they picked up all the cotton off the floor and out of the machines, very dangerous job to,
then we walked around the garden and meadow area, its in its 3rd year i think, was very overgrown and they are getting it looking back to how it use to be, built by a river and the gardens on slopes and rock, a very beautifull setting.unfortunatly with such a dry year its taking toll on some of the plants which arent growing to quicky, so alot of gaps where they should have grown by now, the river bank is lovely with huige gunnera and other wild ferns and shrubs, even rhodadendrons line the banks and garden area, all in all a lovely walk round and over to quick, we could easerly had another hour or two but had to get back for baz`s car, managed to buy a couple of plants on the way out, a bit dearer than i would pay but its nice to have some thing to remind us of days out,,, or should i say a couple of hours out ahahha
picture of the greg family which owned the mill
machines for spinning the cotton and making cloth
display of william perkins who invented a rich purple dye for fabric
the sun was shining which made it a lovely walk, even baz enjoyed it lol, and here are the two plants i got before leaving, hope you enjoyed the tour, lots more to see but far to many pics to put on
Potentilla “Gibson scarlet” and Galtonia candicans, costing £8 for both, daylight robery , but it keeps the work going on there in the gardens, so worth it

So, Baz discussed an Austin 1300, would that be the type I took my test in in about 1971 ? They always seemed to be a pale lemon colour ! I loved this tour round, cannot imagine the noise working with that machinery, the silence when the workers left must have been deafening ! Beautiful scenery, all looking so green, especially the first outdoor photo. You look happy in the sunshine too. : o )))))

It doesn't matter how quick a trip is as long as you enjoyed it. Getting out together is the most important bit.
It's amazing how people used to live and work only a hundred years ago, could you imagine it happening today?
6 Jul, 2010
your right ian, we did enjoy our time together, and the guy was saying before they put vents in letting out the cotton dust from machines it was awfull for workers, they couldnt see the length of the room for dust, and the heat was over 80f, caused all sorts of health problems,

Really enjoyed that San......what a life it must have been working in the mills...really hard, but I bet there were some good laughs too...nice to know he was concerned for his worker's welfare too. Smashing pics, pleased you enjoyed your trip eventually, cars can be such a pain can't they....:o(
6 Jul, 2010

6 Jul, 2010
thats true,, mind you janey i hate the motorways, scared to death, im getting worse, i wont drive on them now, been like this last couple of years, im almost in tears sometimes when very busy and fast ;o( i love driving to, ok on A roads thankfully

I love Quarry Bank Sandra, did you go in the house where the children lived? we had a really good guide when we went who really brought it life, it is three years since we visited so its about time we went again, especially as I dont remember buying any plants there lol
6 Jul, 2010
No, I'm not keen on motorway driving...its those huge lorries trundling by...really scary, best to keep off them if you can, which isn't always possible though, especially if you're off to the airport....then there's the flight to think of....arghh....when I went to see Jim, I worried about it for weeks beforehand...all that time in the air with nothing underneath, I was really scared...Lol!
ooh it's 11 oclock, my bedtime ......lovely to chat...night night everyone...:o)
6 Jul, 2010
It's funny you should say that about motorways San. I used to be a lorry driver and had been for twenty odd years before I packed up to look after Carol. I've driven on just about every major road in Europe and relished the idea but now I hate it. There are so many bad drivers about, people who just have to get in front of you and those who are nearly asleep at the wheel, not to mention those who have never read the highway code, that I always try to avoid them and take the back roads.
I still love driving but try to avoid the busy roads! Lol

Lovely blog Sandra...Glad you enjoyed your trip out fantastic pics of the gardens and the river...Hope your new plants settle into their new home.
7 Jul, 2010
hi carole yes it is a lovely place to visit, didnt get to see the childrens house sadly not enough time but will go again, they had two tables of plants outside the shop, quite expensive but nice as a memento ;o))
janey and ian glad im not alone with the motorway thing, starnge how it comes after years off being ok, but like ian says people going so fast and skipping in front and so close it scares me to death, if anything happened we wouldnt stand a chance, makes me feel sick just thinking about the motorway, im going to sit in the back when we take joe to uni in aberdeen, i wont be able to breath lol
thankyou so much jem, glad you enjoyed the pics, plants all settled in and rained lastnight so thats good for them ;o))

Very interesting. So many 'old' things and techniques and origins are being forgotten as the younger generation shows no interest in how we came to be....very sad.
Looks like a couple of hours well spent though but like Heron says, a few more hours wouldn't have gone amiss. Lovely outside pics too....love the big waterfall:o))
7 Jul, 2010
