march Aeoniums at Corseside

After such a mild winter our succulents and cacti have never looked so healthy….this week i have been rounding them up from their hibernation. We have been cultivating them for about ten years. After just about surviving the winter of 2010/11 we rethought the way in which we keep them. Some had survived several winters outside i sheltered spots for several years until that winter and since then we bring them all inside just to be safe. Every space is taken up in the tunnel, this year with an ever growing selection they took over my mothers conservatory and the tool shed. But now most are gathered in the big shed (which is tooo cold for them in the depths of winter) and boy are we delighted….:-)
id forgotten about the ones in the tool shed which haden’t had any water since october…they are drooping a bit in places but they now have some fresh compost and a good watering so hopefully they will pick up.
so far this year seems to be a good one for aeonium flowers with many showing signs…
although not the prettiest of flowers we are hopeing to follow last years success of seed collection and germination.
these are some of the seedlings of aeonium cunniatum from last years harvest. i’m just hopeing at least one purple one giving us some seed.
the new growth on the succulents are always a pleasure to see….but we are carefull to keep cloths and newspaper to cover if the pemperature drops.
among all the aeoniums i came across this weird wonder…its an aeonium but it seems many stems are fused together. i have seen this on another plant in the garden but i have no idea why it happens
I of course have been turfed out of the tunnel now as Julians tomatoes are about to take over for the summer..
our eldest daughter Rosie is marrying this summer and we have been making flowers from old music paper for the event so these to are vieing for position.
and with Wales winning the grand slam yesterday its been a great end to a great week.hope u guys are getting out in your gardens enjoying Mothers day..:-)

Wow you have had a good winter Sandra, I`m so pleased for you and your babies, lol, I can`t even manage to get one through the winter these days, I reckon its my own fault, I had some near my pond for a very long time in the days when I was too busy to notice them until they flowered, I used to say they were sadly neglected but they did survive a long time, only lost them when we had the bigger pond, I get more time to care for them now and yet cannot keep them very long at all.
Hoping you have a good year with your Toms and have to say I do like your paper flowers...
