Rockery update.

Like Pansypotter I have hankered after a rockery for years and this Easter my OH helped move reclaimed rockery stones into place in a non descript raised bed. PP’s blog yesterday prompted this update hope you like how it is coming on.

After 2 weeks to let the soil settle I started placing spring flowering bulbs and plants.

They have continued to develop and come into their own. Crocus and Iris reticulata, the earliest giving way to fritillaries, tulips and narcisus and then Corydalis and Ipheon. Anemone blanda giving way to A. de Caan ‘Slyphide’.

But what about into summer and then autumn? I have a variety of Dianthus as well as 3 different coloured Phlox sublata.

The A. blanda are going over as Phlox stolonifera ‘Home Fires’ is coming into its own. The slight pink on the back of the anemone petals picked up by the pink of the phlox.

A gorgeous Primula Millers Crimson at the dampish pond edge, next to an Astilbe.

The Haberlea was moved from under the beech tree and placed next to the Lewisia and it is just coming into flower now.

This view is taken from the same angle as the third photo. What a difference 6 weeks makes.

I am trying to ‘layer plant’ so that bulbs and other plants occupy the same space but flower at different times. More plants to look out for, for the autumn:o) Cyclamen will be a definite choice as I love them.

Your careful planning has been so worthwhile and it is looking so colourful and interesting. I shall look forward to the autumn pics with the cyclamen as I love them too. Well done, it's lovely!

Sbg - there are a few crocus that flower in the autumn - not colchicums but proper crocus. A specialist bulb nursery should sell them

Thanks for all the lovely comments. I tried Crocus sativus but I think the squirrels got them. Another one that has a species name beginging with K was lost in the second foul winter of 2010/11 but i will look for that one again.
