Fancy a walk round my garden?!

Thought I would cheer myself up with a chat to GoYers, as OH has departed on his travels! I’m not very good at photography . . . here is the proof . . .
Walk into the garden, and enjoy the scent of Laura Ford rose
This is where we had supper last night, watching the birds and pesky squirrels.
View up the garden from the deck (lovely in bare feet on a hot day like today). Imperata rubra, a favourite grass on right; Styrax japonica in pot.
Close-up of Imperata – the slab is to keep the mice out!
Baskets looking quite pretty, with Surfinia, Bacopa, Verbena and Fuchsia.
Geranium Rozanne in flower at last
Lychnis with Loropetalum (thanks for the recommendation, Spritzhenry!)
Bright splash of Petunia
Liquidambar with my favourite Nemesia
Design feature. Yup – letting the grass grow in a pattern, just for fun!
Thanks for strolling with me . . . :)

Fascinating tour of your lovely garden...
safe journeys to your OH ...
Please ID left to right as many plants as possible in the last but one pic.. (the photo before the striped lawn !) Thanks.

Lovely stroll Sheila on such a beautiful evening. I love the grass, we have done this too only we have left a clover strip for the bees! Grass is full of it.

Thanks for your lovely comment, Pixi.
Thank you too, Terra. I'll do my best . . . at back left is Cow parsley, mid-left is Hellebore foetida, Nemesia front left, Liquidambar centre, another Nemesia to the right in fron of Festuca with a tiny sort-of-Honesty peeping through, then the third Nemesia. To the right of that is the stump of a Cordyline, but it has babies. :))

Thanks, Sheila. That's useful...
and I can see the baby Cordylines, too :o)

wow, your garden is huge and very lovely.. i also have decking envy :)Thanks for the peek..

You have a beautiful garden Sheila, thank you for sharing with us. :))))
27 Jun, 2011
Beautiful garden, love the Liquidambar.
27 Jun, 2011
Thankyou for that lovey stoll! Love the Laura Ford yellow rose and that fab decking, I can just feel it on my bare toes!
I must move my Imperata, it's kind of lost amongst bigger plants now.
That grass design is such an interesting feature. I used to do that here at the stud but the dogs kept flattening it and digging holes looking for mice, so sad to say, I can't do it anymore. I think it looks so effective.

Lovely garden and lovely pictures too! Especially the grass, it looks really effective. We have left a clover patch( you can't fight it) but I can see now, it needs more definition. Keep taking the photographs.

Thank you so much for your comments, Grandma, Madabout, Michaella, Cinders, Lulu and Marshmallow . . . you have definitely cheered me up!

I like the grass idea - I bet its full of wildlife. Thanks for sharing your lovely huge garden with us :-))
27 Jun, 2011
Beautiful garden Sheila, I love that shrub in 2nd to last photo pretty green :-)
27 Jun, 2011
Oh thank you Sheila, that was such a lovely stroll! I love all that space in your garden. Is the liquidambar the lovely shrub/tree with the lime green star shape leaves?
I wish you could see the show gardens at the very big garden centre near here - they have planted wild flowers in 'waves' the same shape as your long grass - I love it!
I do like your little arbour for eating supper - but I see there is none left!!
27 Jun, 2011
Thanks Kfunsters . . . yes, I think the wildlife likes it here as much as I do! :))
Thanks Sewingk - I love that "lime" green colour too - especially with purple shades (not sure if Liquidambar stays that colour though).
27 Jun, 2011
Oops - thanks Sticki - we were writing at the same time! Yes, that's the liquidambar. What is the name of your big GC? do they have a website with pictures (it sounds wonderful)?
27 Jun, 2011
It's webbs
http://www.webbsdirect.co.uk/new-wave-gardens-artlnewg/
But it doesn't show all the pictures unfortunately, I have them on my camera but the computer has died so I can't do a blog on it, sorry.

Five minutes drive from junction 5 of the M5 if you are ever up this way.
27 Jun, 2011
Your garden is really lovely Sheilabub! I love your arbour, with the decking, it looks very chic! I have a Liquidambar too, and I don't know if it's the same variety as mine, but it develops the most gorgeous colours in the autumn time, mine looks like it's on fire, it even had shocking pink through it last year...stunning!! Hope you feel a bit smilier soon, pet! Take care!!

"Not good at taking photos ...."??????? They're great! You've shown us a lovely garden - and I can feel the grass on my bare feet! Lovely wander - thank you. :o)
28 Jun, 2011
Lovely Sheila! You reminded me of the lovely sensation of walking on deck in the sunshine barefoot! I like your grass pattern too, and the grass is super. Actually, I like it all, and as I have said before, many times, I really love the openess and the trees and the big sky! :)) Thank you!
28 Jun, 2011
lovely garden and super photos. I am so jealous of the open spaces.
28 Jun, 2011
I agree with nariz and seaburngirl - they are lovely photos.
How difficult and how expensive is liquidamber? I did wonder about it's name but I imagine the autumn colour is liquid Amber?
28 Jun, 2011
What a lovely garden you have. JEALOUS! Mine is tiny.
28 Jun, 2011
Libet, Nariz, Karen, Seaburn and Alex . . . thank you so much for your lovely comments. You've certainly made me very smiley now! :)))
Sticki, I don't think LiquidambAr (with an A) are particularly pricey, and they're not difficult, but they can grow very large. However, in my clay they're not likely to. Their leaves are very similar to Acers - I shall look forward to their autumn colours!
28 Jun, 2011
I shall look out for one, thank you Sheila. Do they need light and sun or can they cope with shade?
28 Jun, 2011
I honestly don't know if they are picky, Sticki, lol, mine are both in dappled shade and seem quite happy.
28 Jun, 2011
Ok, thank you.
28 Jun, 2011
I'm not ignoring you, Sheila, honest! Been away for a few days and playing 'catch-up' for a while. This was on Monday, the really, really hot day if I remember correctly. Lovely photos and I love the way you have let the grass grow, if only I had a bigger garden . . . . : o ))
1 Jul, 2011
Thank you Shirley, yes you're right, it was on hot Monday. No worries (nose in the air, pretending I didn't notice you ignoring me, lol). Hope it's not taking you TOO long to catch up!
OH keeps wanting to cut that grass pattern, I'll have to tell him "no, GoYers know best"!
1 Jul, 2011
Send him to webbs Sheila so he can see that even a top garden centre is doing something similar.

how lovely to have walked around your garden, thank you.
your Liquidambar caught my eye, i saw one last year in the gardens of one of the large chateaux around here, i didnt know what it was at the time but it was huge, a lot bigger than the books say she ought to be- and it was on clay!! so be warned!
but they are beautiful things

Many thanks, Resi. Yes, there is a Liquidambar at Wisley and it is ENORMOUS, but probably ancient!
2 Jul, 2011
I love that patterned grass Sheila and also the lovely trellis pergola. Does it sink into the decking or sit on top? Being South/West facing my patio is very hot and sun shades don't quite work so something like that would be lovely.
17 Aug, 2011
Thanks Ginelle. The uprights go through the decking - I guess it's stronger like that. The roof is Willow, which can be bought in rolls . . . it's my favourite spot in the garden, built by my brilliant husband! But "luckily"(?) it faces north.
18 Aug, 2011
Lovely garden Sheila, it looks very private.
22 Aug, 2011
Thanks Annella, yes we are very lucky . . . fairly private, and peaceful too.
22 Aug, 2011
Clever husband Sheilabub. In my next life I am looking for someone who can do DIY - well, change a light bulb would be good, cut grass without demolishing everything close to the edge of a border and maybe make a decent cup of tea. Not that I have anyone to do these things now, but you never know. Lovely garden and thanks for the info re pergola.
23 Aug, 2011
:)))
24 Aug, 2011
I could do with one of those too Ginellie, let me know if you find a site for them...Lol!
24 Aug, 2011
Will do Annella.
