I know it's Autumn when....

…the vine leaves change colour.
Vitis coignetiae
Vitis vinifera ‘Purpurea’
…when leaves turn to a scarlet waterfall before the wind blows them away.
Parthenocissus quinquefolia
…when berries change to orange or red ready to feed the birds.
Pyracantha
Berberis thunbergii
Cotoneaster horizontalis
….when the stream wall is glorious.
Parthenocissus tricuspidata
…when conkers fall on the gravel under the horse chestnut tree, shining and smooth.
….when Hamamelis leaves glow in the border
….and Itea virginica ‘Little Henry’ turns from green to maroon.
…when the brightest Aster of all glows in the flowerbed.
Aster ‘Alma Potschke’
…and Dahlias have a final fling before the first frosts
Dahlia ‘Famoso’
while Sedums are flowering like pink plates beckoning butterflies.
Sedum spectabile
…when soft seedheads are as beautiful in the rain as the flowers that went before
Clematis tangutica
and I plant pretty little violas in place of dead lobelia and past-it petunias.
…when my box of bulbs arrives – but it’s pouring with rain, so I can’t plant them
Then I know it’s Autumn!

Nice one Barbara ;o)

What a lovely blog Barbara :o) I do like the autumn. You'r garden must look just as spectacular now as it did in the high summer.
Now you've given me an idea for some things I shall put on that list. - I'll have to move my Cotoneaster hirizontalis to where I can see it better, and find somewhere to plant my Parthenocissus, which has been in a pot for 4 years and doesn't like it there.
I have started to make the list from memory, but it has been raining too much for me to go out and see what really needs doing. I hope I can do it over the week end.
I hope you didn't get the torrential rain we had yesterday.

Very orderly and very cleverly your lovely photos were set up and described.
Wonderful.

Too many lovely pics to pick just one, lovely thoughtful reminder that each season has its beauty. I don't have any asters, and love your Alma Potschke. Does she suffer from mildew? if not ...she's on my little list:-) I have bought some erigeron karvinskianus profusion seeds off Ebay and would welcome any tips on sowing and growing. I haven't opened the packet yet in case I sneeze lol, talk about little seeds!!! I would probably have done better buying a few plants and letting them seed themselves:-)

great blog B and lovely photos :-) hope you get to plant your bulbs today
2 Oct, 2010
Thanks, all - I'm pleased that you enjoyed it! Yes, it poured down yesterday, but the sun's out today, so I might get some bulbs in. :-)))
Ba - as my Erigerons seed themselves everywhere, I don't think you'll have trouble in getting them to grow - try adding some dry silver sand to sow them. Alma is a well-behaved lady - she wouldn't 'dream' of allowing mildew to sully her beauty! lol.

Lovely blog and great photos, aren't the autumn colours glorious,it is dry and bright here today but cold.
2 Oct, 2010
she's on my little list then. Should i scatter some now or sow indoors in pots?:-)
2 Oct, 2010
Try both! If you don't succeed by any chance, give me a yell and I'll dig you up a few little plants.

Stunning pictures as always spritz, fantastic photography.I'm green with envy!
the conker and viola are my favourite, and the clematis, and the...ok all of them. I hope this weekends wind and rain doesn't blow away all the autumn colour.
