My daughter gave me something different for Mothers’ Day – a book of poems, set out so that there’s one for each day of the year. Today’s was one of my favourite poems. It has a message I’d do well to heed: so today…I did!

‘Leisure’ by W.H. Davies

What is this life, if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare?

No time to stand beneath the boughs
And stare as long as sheep or cows.

No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night.

No time to turn at Beauty’s glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance.

No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began.

A poor life this, if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

its a timely message too Spritz-- we spend time working in the garden and sometimes forget to just 'stare' and we should-- just stand and stare--

Thanx 4 sharing this lovely Poem & your wonderful garden pics Spritz they go so well with every word :)

21 Apr, 2010

Thanks, all - I must try to remember that gardens are for enjoying, not just for working in - especially in the sun!! :-))

21 Apr, 2010

Thank you Spritz for reminding us all that gardens are a labour of love but we can just sit for a while and enjoy them. I'm still not sure whether I'm a cow or a sheep? Lol

21 Apr, 2010

Lovely mums get lovely presents.
Just off out to the garden to 'stand and stare'

If anyone is interested, the Poet, WH Davies came from Newport, South Wales. He was a tramp - amonst other things. There is a statue of him in the middle of the main street of Newport. It's a bit contraversial as the statue has a cloak over his head because no-one could find a photo of his face!! That caused an outcry as, even on the internet, a picture can be seen of him. (I'll say no more about Newport Council and their statues).

These were lovely photo`s Spritz set to a very thought provoking poem, glad you took the time to `stand and stare`.

21 Apr, 2010

Sprog - that's interesting! He can't stare at anything with a cloak over his head, can he? lol.

Thanks for the lovely comments - I think Ian needs to check if he has wool growing!!!

Thank you for this lovely blog, the poem and your photos work so well together. It's made me go and sit in the garden for a while appreciating what is there.

21 Apr, 2010

Lovely pics Spritz to suit the poem. I'm fed up standing and staring though and want to get working.

What is this life with foot in air, all I can do is flippin' stare:-(

Isn't it funny, I was quite fit in the bad weather:-)

21 Apr, 2010

lol Bornagain I think its funny

21 Apr, 2010

I've always liked this poem and your photos really enhance it, Spritz. Really enjoyed your blog, thank you.

Thanks too, for your earlier blog on clematis pruning. I followed your instructions and my clematis 'Ken Donson' is now putting on lots of lovely new growth and flower buds :)

21 Apr, 2010

You're very welcome, Gee. I'm glad it helped. I shall be looking out for the photos! :-))

Poor Ba....I sympathise - and I didn't take my own advice today! Tsk, tsk.

21 Apr, 2010

I'm going to look at your blog on clematis pruning:-) I made my first wigwam today for your sweetpea godchildren. I was wearing my proper gardener kneepads so I can 'walk' on my knees, a lightweight kitchen chair that I put my left knee on and move in the manner of Long John Silver, but holding on to the chair back if you see what I mean, and terrifying the dogs with my crutches which clatter to the ground wherever I prop them up. You would have been proud of me...and your godchildren:-)

21 Apr, 2010

Oh Ba -you are a heroine! That shows dedication. :-)))

I'll make you laugh now - in a strange kind of way - and sympathetically, I hope

The badgers visited again last night - they ploughed up my lawn, so I had to find out how they'd got in. So there I was, crawling along the back hedge, peering underneath to see if the stock fence was intact...it was, so I had to get behind the shrubs and trees in the side border...luckily, I found the new tunnel almost at once.

I must have looked very funny!

21 Apr, 2010

Sorry - my comment appeared twice...

21 Apr, 2010

Twice as funny from here, LOL LOL

21 Apr, 2010

Were they both sympathetic laughs, Wagger? ;-/

21 Apr, 2010

Enjoyed reading that poem not heard it for a long time.Thanks...

21 Apr, 2010

That takes me back, I`m not really a poetry person Spritz, however that is one that must have struck a chord all those years ago because I was saying it as I was reading and remembered most of it....Lovely photo`s to match..

21 Apr, 2010

Thanks to you both - I'm glad the poem appeared on the right day, not in mid-winter!

21 Apr, 2010

I'm definitely laughing sympathetically Barbara, do you have any neighbours?:-)

21 Apr, 2010

Nope - not in that direction, anyway! (Luckily!)

21 Apr, 2010

Thank you for posting that poem with the beautiful pictures.

22 Apr, 2010

That's lovely - we all need to do that, wherever we are in the world.

Thank you for saying it - and welcome to GOY!

22 Apr, 2010

No, empathetic ! :-)

22 Apr, 2010

No wool Spritz but I don't chew the cud either?

22 Apr, 2010

Well - what can I say? You are neither, Ian.

Wagger...xx

22 Apr, 2010

That's a lovely poem Barbara and I've heard it recently but can't remember where, maybe an advert , it comes alive with the lovely pics though! Beautiful.

22 Apr, 2010

Perhaps I'm a short haired "Show"? (cross between a sheep AND a cow!)
By the way I've sent you a couple of PM's!

22 Apr, 2010

Thanks, Mick. :-)

OK Ian - I'll take a look! And no - you're far too tall to be a 'show'. lol.

22 Apr, 2010

How about a long legged "cowp" then? Lol

22 Apr, 2010

Weeellllll...not really! You're just - Ian!! :-))

22 Apr, 2010

Lol ;~))

22 Apr, 2010
