Up, up and up again

Sunday was mainly dry, a little cloudy perhaps but I fancied a bit of a walk. The Malvern hills are the highest point in Worcestershire [i think] and were allegedly part of the inspiration for C.S.Lewis’ Narnia stories and Rivendell in Lord of the Rings by Tolkien.

Malvern was where Edward Elgar spent most of his life, if you would like some music to accompany the photos there is a link here for ‘Nimrod’ from the Enigma Variations:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NhnMd1Jl7SA

The hills rise almost out of nothing and make for quite a steep climb.

this is the view driving towards Malvern:

You wouldn’t exactly call this ideal planting conditions:

Part way up, looking east across Worcestershire:

The skies were a little threatening, the clouds remained but it didn’t rain, on a brighter day the view would have been clearer.

Exciting to see a red kite over Malvern! …..even if it is the type with a string!

And just when you think you are nearly there, another climb comes into view:

Looking north across the Malverns:

From high up you can see a very long way ~ all the way to the Sunset Strip? I think you can see the Welsh border from here.

Finally the top:
[wish there was a cafe]

Some say this view of the Malverns is like a dragon’s back:

On the way down now, this is possibly the brightest thing I saw that day although there is a treat coming later:

Mostly down the slope now and a cafe awaits, rather Victorian seating I think, this is at ‘St Anne’s well’

Did you guess the treat?

Nearly back down, old man’s beard growing on the walls:

And so the sun sets over Malvern:

Did you actually just sneak that photo in Sticki, or was there a very fortuitous stickitoffee cafe half way down the hill? btw...if you get the chance, on a sunny day, stick your nose in the gorse (avoiding the thorns) as some of them have a beautiful scent that reminds me of Pina Colada!! Speaking of Pina Colada......;)

10 Jan, 2012

No honestly there is a cafe virtually at the bottom of the hill. very welcome it is too!!

i like pina colada!!

lovely blog stickee. Tolkein also got some of is inspiration fro Malham in the yorkshire dales.

Love the fern seat. looks a victorian style, but there is a company that takes copies and then reproduces them in cast Aluminium. I have a set of lily of the valley seating.

what i would give for your treat yummy :o)

10 Jan, 2012

Wow! that really was a treat then! ;))

10 Jan, 2012

thanks SBG, i didnt know that about malham but i know its a beautiful place.

im sure the seat is reproduction but i quite liked its ferny pattern; fits in with the little sheltered place it is in and so victorian ~ Malvern is a spa town.

I did share [a bit] of the sticky toffee pudding with OH!!

10 Jan, 2012

Oh dear, I do despair of you! That really is sticky, Sticki!!!
Let me know when they install cable cars and I will join you lol!
We have just finished off our Christmas cake (no icing or marzipan) but it tasted gorgeous and we bought a whisky flavoured dundee cake from Tescos that bit the dust today..that was really yummy.
But I have been good and packed away a box of liqueurs and a tin of quality street for next Christmas (yerse..well..maybe....).
Next month its the gym for me (big sigh), regular walks sans snow and ice, and a sticky free diet. Well, what are NY resolutions for if not to break??
Still, I feel a good deal healthier after looking at those great pictures LOL!

Beautiful countryside, Sticki. Lovely sunset, lovely STP. Mmmm....

10 Jan, 2012

Great tour thanks!

10 Jan, 2012

Oh I am impressed Sticki, we often drive into Malvern passing along the bottom of the hills but I know I`d never make the climb.

10 Jan, 2012

you put the liqueurs away tet? how could you? they wouldnt have lasted this long in this house! we ate the christmas cake, finished it boxing day, made another ~ one that all the bits come in a box and thats half gone. glad im keeping you healthy.

thanks Oji, SS and Stroller ~ it was steeper than i thought!!!

:o))

11 Jan, 2012

That must have been a fantastic walk. You deserved your treat :o)

11 Jan, 2012

That walk was definitely worth the calories in that scrummy pud Stick! But what!! No cream?! Lol! Beautiful pics, and a lovely blog, Sticki! That tree just looks like something taken straight from Lord of the Rings, it's fascinating! Those roots make it look like it could actually walk!

11 Jan, 2012

Thanks hywel, I thought so too!

They did offer cream or even a chocolate bar stuck in the middle Libet, but I said no, a token gesture to healthy eating - oh and we ate outside, does that count!? I loved that tree too! Maybe that's where the Ents idea came from??

11 Jan, 2012

If ever a tree looked as though it would get up and walk - that one does! What a lovely walk! The 'dragon's back' reminds me of Cribyn in the Brecon Beacons. Looks similar. Fancy having a cafe at the BOTTOM of the walk!! The TOP is where you need it! We did a popular walk in this region - the Urdon to Treviso - and found a fantastic bar at the top with everything a climber would require - loos, mirrors, strong coffee, hot food, chairs and warmth! Glad you enjoyed the pud! Like you, I'm trying to put an extra 'oomph' into everything I do in order to wear off the results of all those mince pies and cake! Happy exercising!

11 Jan, 2012

lovely pictures Sticki - great views - those tree roots !!!! :))))))))

11 Jan, 2012

Lovely blog! Really love those old tree roots! :)
And of course your sticky toffe pud! mmmmmmmmmmm

Lovely views Sticki, I keep meaning to go for a climb.......with a Pina Colada in my flask!

11 Jan, 2012

you are kind, all of you, thank you for your lovely comments. It would be nice to take some of those pictures again in summer when its not quite so cloudy! You would be able to see the malvern show ground from the hills.

I agree Nariz, definitely better to have a cafe at the top, I thought there was one somewhere but the malverns stretch out a bit, we climbed to the Worcestershire beacon, perhaps there is a cafe nearer the Herefordshire beacon ~ also part of Malvern.

11 Jan, 2012

Not done this walk since I was a wee schoolgirl, was born and bred in Worcestershire, brings back some very happy memories, thanks for a lovely blog Sticki, oh and loved the treat of course.

11 Jan, 2012

11 Jan, 2012

Lovely blog Sticki, really enjoyed it. Your photos are getting better and better. One small request.... please dont show me the treats, trying to remove excess baggage from Christmas after over indulgence.!!! lol You deserved it though after that steep climb.

11 Jan, 2012

thanks PL, these pictures arent as clear as i would like them, it was a bit of a dull day.
sorry but the treats might have to stay ~ bit of a trademark!! but i could put a warning on ~ look away now!!??
im trying to keep off them myself now.

Exactly...How did you know?

12 Jan, 2012

thought it would appeal to your creative side.!!

12 Jan, 2012

look forward to seeing it.
will it be like arthur rackham type drawing?

12 Jan, 2012

Ok...Why Arthur Rackham.?

12 Jan, 2012

cos those type of trees always appear in his pictures, his trees always look as if they have faces peering out of them and long thin arms waving eerily around.

12 Jan, 2012

Malvern looks very tropical BTW

12 Jan, 2012

tropical??? well there wasnt any snow i suppose! are you thinking of the sunset?

12 Jan, 2012

It's good there are no calories in pictures of lovely food!
'Feast your eyes' as they say.
Like others here, my favourite pic is the tree with those weird and wonderful roots. Definitely Ent material.

12 Jan, 2012

Grand blog Sticki, I`ve never been to your part of the country so its lovely to see your pics, the one of the tree does bring to mind the walking trees in the films, lol,...
