A green and very pleasant land

There is a garden, not far from here, where the birds sing all day, where there is no square inch without a plant and where I could happily wander or sit all day, far away from everything busy.

Back in March when the wind was cool I visited for the first time:

A little gem of a snowdrop was hiding, I think this is Wendy’s Gold:

Hellebores covered the ground:

Amazingly the sky was blue and the eucalyptus towered skyward with its beautiful bark:

Spring was on its way:

This week I returned, hoping to see more, as I walked in the hellebores greeted me:

And bright bulbs lit up the garden:

Looking across a vista of green, so many textures and so much variety:

I love these bright little stars:

A spring path through the cowslips, the polyanthus, the primroses:

Quietly at the back of the garden I found a little alpine bed, not yet at its best but I liked its construction:

Green in all its guises, this luminous plant shines out:

The tiny but beautiful double celandine:

I’m not sure I have ever seen so many erythroniums, they must like it here [so do I but thankfully there is only one of me!!]

Everywhere you look there is something new, I loved this little periwinkle:

Green is my favourite colour, this garden has it all, this is Veratrum:

Archways are a lovely feature:

So much variety, a lifetime’s enjoyment and work:

We used to call this ’Joseph’s coat’

Like a river bed that has been planted:

Green beneath your feet everywhere you look but look up and spring is here in the blue sky and the blossom:

Im not sure what these are but I loved them:

Having heard and seen the bluetits, the wren, the robin, blackbird and ring collared doves I would just like to stay in this green haven.

14 Apr, 2012

It does look a lovely garden, I can see why you like to visit, thankyou for sharing your lovely pics Sticki...

14 Apr, 2012

It makes me think of Frances Hodgson Burnett's "Secret Garden". Simply beautiful, Sticki. It gives the impression that the sun's always shining, too.

14 Apr, 2012

LOVE that Veratrum. Never heard of it before. Is it rather like a hosta? Anyone know any more about them? Pleeeeese?

15 Apr, 2012

Love that Veratrum, never seen it before and the Eucalyptus tree.

15 Apr, 2012

Beautiful so beautiful :o)

15 Apr, 2012

Thanks for your lovely comments, you are welcome oji.

Thank you all, no the sun isn't always out, on my second visit I was dodging the showers! But the sun did come out eventually - worth waiting for!

The lady who lives here is a real plantswoman, as you can see from the amount and variety of plants. I had never come across the veratrum before, it does look a bit like a hosta nariz, crossed with the leaves of a lily! She had a smaller one growing next to it which at the moment is a stem with leaves, it seems to take a while to do this complex thing. Sadly she didn't have any of these for sale!

Do you like that book gattina? I love it! Also tom's midnight garden.

Lovely Sticki. And the photography was brilliant!

Beautiful blog Sticki its a lovely garden.
Your opening lines made me think of a song..A hymn maybe?

THere is a happy land far far away
Where saints in glory stand, bright, bright as day.
Oh, how they sweetly sing, worthy is our Savior King,
Loud let His praises ring, praise, praise for aye.

Come to that happy land, come, come away;
Why will ye doubting stand, why still delay?
Oh, we shall happy be, when from sin and sorrow free,
Lord, we shall live with Thee, blest, blest for aye.

Bright, in that happy land, beams every eye;
Kept by a Father’s hand, love cannot die.
Oh, then to glory run; be a crown and kingdom won;
And, bright, above the sun, we reign for aye.

made me think of Dad :)

Aw pixi, hope it brought back nice memories for you.
Thank you Brian that's very kind. I don't know which one it is but it's a tree peony I don't have one at all, I think my garden would be too shady?

15 Apr, 2012

what a wonderful garden Sticki, great photo set & the veratrum shot I would happily frame.

15 Apr, 2012

a garden with everything..:)

That Veratrum is highly poisonous as well as having beautiful White or Dark Maroon flower spikes.

15 Apr, 2012

Thanks bampy, I was thinking about doing that but if it's poisonous??

Didn't know that pimms! The flower spikes sound lovely.

15 Apr, 2012

very nice blog Sticki, so much to see and photo :-)

15 Apr, 2012

They are gorgeous plants...I was tempted to get some, then found out they are very toxic..My cat would chew them, so not worth the risk....I get my new camera tomorrow and hope to be taking pictures as good as these now....lol

15 Apr, 2012

thanks SL,
dont think i want to get one of those either pimms, have to just look at this one!!

:)

15 Apr, 2012

thank you hywel, i wish it was my garden!!

15 Apr, 2012

A lovely book Gattina, I still have my copy upstairs, walled gardens always bring reminders of that story to me, even more so when one comes across a doorway half hidden amongst roses or ivy....

15 Apr, 2012

I have one by my bed lincslass, and i love those doorways.

15 Apr, 2012

Its funny I too thought of a hymn when I saw your title, 'There is a green hill, far away'............
Lovely lovely blog Sticki.

15 Apr, 2012

i wasnt thinking of hymns but i was brought up on them so maybe its there somewhere!!!

thank you GM.

I have feeling the original there is a green hill, has 63 verses???

15 Apr, 2012

63!! That would be a long time sitting on a church pew!!

15 Apr, 2012

or standing!!!

dad always threatened to choose that one when he was preaching but i dont think he ever did.

15 Apr, 2012

Lol, yes standing, was thinking of that flat wooden bench and the draft from under the doors!!

15 Apr, 2012

we had chairs!!! but they were wooden, the services were long and veeeeeeeery boring.

15 Apr, 2012

Absolutely loved it Stickie. Its also given me some ideas for my project next door on allotments. One side as you know is veg and the other side I would like to have it just as a garden or different gardens. Elizabeth sent me through that link you put on ages ago, " Field of Dreams" and would love to include a little meadow somewhere. Thanks for sharing it with us. It must be lovely having somewhere like this so close to you.

15 Apr, 2012

thank you rose, glad it has given you some ideas too ~ how about a winding grass path through wave shapes of wild flowers????
all the best to elizabeth too ~ have you been to visit yet?

15 Apr, 2012

What a wonderful tranquil english country garden, so hard to find these days, a pleasure to visit, loved the photos too.

15 Apr, 2012

it is a bit special isnt it DD, an older lady has created it from nothing over the past 30 or 40 years, you can see how she loves it!!

thank you snoopdog ~ i have a feeling there may be some veg round the back of the house, but as far as i know the lady does this all by herself ~ i think veg might be a bit too much work

15 Apr, 2012

Great blog Sticki and what a beautiful garden, no wonder you went back again. Lovely photos, many thanks for letting us share your visit. :o)

15 Apr, 2012

17 Apr, 2012

This is the one Stroller, thank you. She is a lovely lady.

17 Apr, 2012

Good idea Stickie , I will put it on my to do list. I have that many ideas that I am getting confused. Thats not hard! lol. I'll tell Elizabeth you asked after her. We are going in August and I can't wait. We've never been to Ireland before and I just can't wait to meet her at last. Thanks for asking.

17 Apr, 2012

I have been twice Rose, its a beautiful country and the people are soooooo friendly ~ but you already know that!!

17 Apr, 2012

18 Apr, 2012

Thank you Shenuk, it's nice to have such a lovely garden locally!

18 Apr, 2012

Where abouts did you go in Ireland Stickie? Are they all as friendly as our Elizabeth!

18 Apr, 2012

Hope you enjoy your visit to Ireland Rose. We found people very friendly, we went to Southern Ireland touring round in the car, I think it was Waterford (famous for crystal glass) where along the quayside was the railway line, tram line, and cars, but my favourite little place was called Kilmore Quay not a lot there but oh so peaceful.

18 Apr, 2012

I went to Belfast [OH working] but the best bit was a trip to the Giants Causeway ~ utterly brilliant, oh and the whisky tasting was good too
Also spent a week in Kenmare, south west Ireland, just south of the Dingle peninsula
I doubt anyone is as friendly as Libet but it was very nice and lovely food. great music too

18 Apr, 2012

Absolutely amazing! Thank you for sharing.

18 Apr, 2012

Thank you Becker, glad you liked it ~ bit like an English cottage garden but with more unusual plants.

18 Apr, 2012

What a cracking garden! I love spaces which are not too formal and the whole ground is covered, and the colours/textures are great. Superb set of pictures.

18 Apr, 2012
