Autumn Colours, blue sky and a bit more water! (Witley Court)

Autumn is quite possibly my favourite season, the colours and nature’s amazing variety make me smile and just in case you havent seen enough water this year I thought I would bring you some pictures of water as we like to enjoy it!
I went to Witley Court yesterday but also in the spring so I have included a few photos from a rather different type of day by way of contrast!
[warning to those who dont like 8-legged creatures ~ avoid picture: 7]
Yesterday, the skies were grey but look at the autumn colour already ~ from the car park!
Sweet chestnuts like little green hedgehogs curled up in the leaves:
Is this the last dandelion of the summer?
Viburnam in flower, smothering the bush, you could think it was spring!
Im not sure what these were but they fascinated me:
Hydrangea are not my favourite but I rather like these, it looks as though its pointing the way along the path: [ok, so the path wasn’t that steep I just had to angle the camera for the flower!!]
Has George’s marvellous medicine been used here? made me laugh!
Like sea shells clinging to a rock, the pretty funghi:
Who has been eating my breakfast?
Autumn dresses in fashion now ~ frills are back in:
Surprisingly colour still lights the way
And huge trees reach to the grey skies, is this sequoia?
All the leaves are green: my favourite colour:
A similar view in the spring:
Not quite ‘up the airy mountain and down the rushy glen’ but the stream is high after yesterday’s rain!
Looking the other way, and in better weather:
A first glimpse of the fountain restored only a few years ago:
And here it was in May, under blue skies:
On a warm day its a lovely cooling place to be:
Yesterday I hardly knew if it was raining but in fact the spray from the fountain had soaked me, my glasses and the camera!
In 1937 [remember it?] there was a huge fire that destroyed this once magnificent building, even today I feel there is a sadness about it, a place that held fun and parties, now open to the sky and no one lives here any more:
Looking around the flower gardens: this was in May when it was time to work!
Even yesterday there was still colour:
In front of the main house are the formal beds:
I think there is rather a Tuscan flavour to this garden: [sadly no pizzas!]
I wouldnt mind a conservatory like this to enjoy the view, [although I might prefer to have a roof]:
From a summer view to a little plant in the winter garden:
The other side of the house there is a lake, with wooded paths and meadows, you can see the effect of Monday’s stormy rains in the muddy water [on Monday the house was shut due to road closures from flooding]
here it is on a sunny day in May:
I could spend all day here [under blue skies]
Meadows, wild flowers and water ~ what more could you want:
Sorry its been a long walk but you can have a bit of a rest here:
Just a little further through the woods, to the fan tree:
and mistletoe already on its way, grafted on about 4 foot up the tree:
A few more shots around the estate under blue skies:
ah, bliss……
Within the same estate is a rather ornate church which is worth taking a look inside:
perhaps not to everyone’s taste but undeniably impressive, lavish and detailed:
it has a golden dome to the church which can be seen from miles away ~ you can also see it behind the main building in the earlier photo
Now you must be ready for a bit of lunch! So off to the cafe, which is cosy and friendly, part of it is in a large conservatory, who could resist taking refreshments where they grow passion flowers:
A range of healthy food, I chose the celery, courgette and watercress soup ~ lovely!
And a final picture of the magical autumn colours:

What a lovely blog, beautiful pictures of spring and autumn really enjoyed my walk. Hope you have dried out today. Little better weather in Lincolnshire today, a little sunshine and only a little rain. Hoping for better sunshine tomorrow. :O)

Its easy to see why this is one of your favourite walks! I wondered who is responsible for the garden now that the house isn't habitable? and is the church still used ever?
26 Sep, 2012
thank you sheila, i had several photos of my visit in the spring but i didnt think i had put them on here, there are still a few rhododendrons out now!
thanks for the spindle tree name too
thank you oliveoil, its raining even more here today but i stayed in, we had no sun!
the house is run by 'English Heritage' Steragram, i assume they do the gardens too, but sometimes these places have volunteer workers?
i think the church is used, by the local people.

Ooh - that's lovely, Sticki - what a fabulous place. Autumn is my favourite time of year. Those trees are wonderful. That is a sequoia. There were some where my grandmother lived when I was a child. I so loved them, especially their "soft" bark. I like the fabulous "fan" tree, too.
And I'd rather like to get a go on that pipe organ!

I really enjoyed my walk Sticki.....my feet are not so sore - I wore comfortable shoes..lol!
Your photography skills are great. You seem to capture things 'just right'.
I smiled at the mistletoe being only 4ft up the tree - does that mean that the little people come out from under the trees and get a kiss.
Thanks again for sharing.

Great shots, love the idea of passion flowers in the cafe. That spider looked very bug ; ) thanks for the tour

thanks melchi, and thanks for the confirmation of sequoia, i dont know what the 'fan' tree really is, but it intrigued me to see how it was growing, some branches are growing from the main branches completely upright!
many thanks junna, you are much too kind, i took loads of photos, only these were ok.
thanks sheila, i must try to remember more tree names, i wish they would stay in my brain.
thank you scottish, you might have needed boots in some places, i think the mistletoe is deliberate, it looks as if its in an area for children's groups ~ but the little people makes it sound much more interesting!
thanks stevie, really nice cafe, they had arum lilies, abutilon and many other things there too, as well as a plant stall outside ~ everything £2!! the spider was nearly as big as me ~ there was another the other side of the web!!!

Oh Sticki . . . lovely photos as ever, and what a good idea to include your Spring pics of this beautiful place. Made me smile to see the Rhodos in bloom :))
Those pink things in pic 5 look like seeds from a Spindle tree (Euonymus something-or-other!).
