Constant lovely hot sunny weather ... lots of garden work done.

Early summer gave no indication of the heat-wave to come … my back garden was green after the spring-time rains …

In my front garden, Rosa Ballerina put on a stunning performance for the appreciative mermaid …

……………………………………………………………………..

Recent months have consisted of non-stop outside projects in the sunshine …. I can work in the heat … I wake up about 6 a.m. … I love these hot summer days. But I’m usually exhausted and back in bed by 7 pm …

Grass seed was positioned and pigeon-proofed. It grew well here in the shade …

Happy hours of jet-washing … which turned out to be a multi-task … usefully watering my plants at the same time …

Here’s a nifty way to hold up Photinia pink marble, to allow jet-washing of pavements underneath …

……………………………………………………………………..

Due to the heavy showers in April, many of my climbers had grown over-large, requiring plenty of trimming/sawing of big branches …

… so I’m still cramming my green bin full to over-flowing, plus also my friend’s green bin across the road .. very kind of her… at other times I let her put items in my bins, so the arrangement works well …

……………………………………………………………………..

My gardening shoes became thin, from weeks of work …

The temperatures soared … ideal weather for pot-washing …

These activities are all very exhausting for the canine audience … sometimes they have to move into the shade to recuperate …

……………………………………………………………………..

A good year for roses, despite the scorching summer …

This is Rosa Heartbeat in my front garden …

……………………………………………………………………..

But the wood pigeons have become a major problem locally … mostly due to various neighbours allowing trees to grow huge. These big birds are destructive, messy and noisy and they chase away the small-size feathered friends.

The pigeons have done alarming damage to my shed roofs, resulting in extra tasks for me to tackle …

……………………………………………………………………..

‘Necessity is the mother of invention’ … so … patent pending … good for removing moss and grime from far corners …

……………………………………………………………………..

Below are slats from my mother’s bench, which I had inherited. I kept them after I had fixed new wood in the bench, many years ago. The slats have been stored in my shed … ‘might come in useful’ ha ha.

I’ve given them a coat of wood preserver, ready to become fascias/pelmets over new roofing felt around one of my two sheds needing repair …

… it was pleasant to work on this shady side of my garden, while looking across at my snoozing dogs, and the climbing roses …

… Rosa High Hopes, over my dog run area …

……………………………………………………………………..

Hmmm .. only a few hundred more gardening miles, and I might have to consider recycling these …

……………………………………………………………………..

Hotter and hotter each day, so a creative design was required for extra shade over furry friends …

……………………………………………………………………..

Time to start putting new felt on the first of two sheds. My new neighbour kindly lifted the felt roll from my car before he went to work .. because it was too heavy for me to carry in. But, with the felt on my lawn, I could unwrap it, and roll it around ready to cut it …

……………………………………………………………………..

A pause for fun .. giving Truffle a quick shower with the hose set on ‘mister’ .. Mister Truffle enjoyed the ‘mister’ , and the water trickled through to the thirsty roots of High Hopes rose …

……………………………………………………………………..

This picture shows an update on the first shed roof which I’ve covered. The bricks don’t need to be there now. I’ll continue with shed roof work as soon as the weather allows. Today, the high winds would blow me off my ladders, and tomorrow we are due to get about 2 month’s rain in one day …

……………………………………………………………………..

And I guess I’ve done a solid summer of worthwhile garden work, because my canine helpers have rewarded me with a new pair of garden slippers …

I hope there’s enough good weather left for me to finish both shed roofs, and to paint the sheds as well …

Good luck to everyone in getting your garden plans completed before autumn arrives !

I so enjoyed your narrative on all the jobs you’ve been doing very entertaining! I have a similar pair of garden clogs- ready for the bin!

28 Jul, 2018

Hi Amsterdam ..
thank you... a busy summer !
... I doubt Lidl will stock the clogs I like till next springtime, so my dogs will have to wait till then !

28 Jul, 2018

You have been busy ... all looking great especially the furies

Gg

28 Jul, 2018

Oh Terra how ever do you manage to do it all? Your middle name must be NonStop!

28 Jul, 2018

You have been busy Terra! Rose ‘High Hopes’ is very lovely! I hope the dogs are coping with the heat. Its much cooler here this evening. I don’t think it will be very long before I hit my mattress either. We’ve been bridal gown shopping all day today!

28 Jul, 2018

Your gardens are looking wonderfull love those roses Neptune and Truffle look as they are enjoying tge nice weather. If there was a Mr Men award I would give you little Miss Busy to you lol. Glad you now have a new nice neighbour .

You've been very busy. I'm glad the weather was suitable for you.
Your garden always looks well cared for.
It was kind of Truffle and Neptune to get some new footwear for you :)

28 Jul, 2018

Your roses look great and I laughed at your shoes, LOL! They must be comfortable! New shoes give me blisters. We had a big nasty thunderstorm yesterday - I loved it! It's much cooler now and everything is green again.

29 Jul, 2018

You are so practical, Terra! I'm breathless with admiration at all that you've achieved . . . you deserve a medal :)

We loved our thunderstorm yesterday too, Paul, and it is a lot cooler now - and showery. Bit of a shame that it's the day for our croquet club 'garden' lunch!

29 Jul, 2018

I love your blogs, Terra. Glad to see your two friends are managing the heat with your help. I have never known such a lovely summer here in Scotland. It is hard work watering plants etc. Last year our Roses rotted before they could flower due to too much rain.
We had high winds and rain last night but no damage. We need all the rain we can get.

29 Jul, 2018

Sorry about your luncheon Sheila, however there is still plenty of nice weather ahead for you to reschedule.

29 Jul, 2018

Another beautiful garden Terr, love it, the dogs look well

29 Jul, 2018

Thanks Paul - but too difficult to reschedule for 40 people. In fact we had a great party indoors!

(Sorry to butt in, Terra)

Hi Tt, lovely blog again, I'm glad you can get so much work done in all the heat, it never used to bother me, but now at the age of 70, I find I can only work in it for about 20 minutes, before I have to have a break.
I had to re-felt both of my sheds last year, thanks to the pigeons, and 1 of them had been pecked right through the wood, and had rotted, fortunately I had couple of sheets of 9 ply, marine quality plywood, which I cut to size and re-roofed the whole shed, then covered both in roofing felt, with a 15 year guarantee, so that will probably last me now, Derek.

Hi Gnarly, Stera, Karen, 3d, Stripes ... as soon as the sun shines I must get busy again ... so much to do before winter arrives ...

Thank you Hywel, Sheila and Bathgate ..
the new garden slippers have already started on their garden marathon ! Sheila and Paul .. good to read about the fun indoor party !

Linda .. I'm glad you've had warm, sunny weather. Yes, watering is tiring, but good to have the hot days.

Thanks Derek .. great idea to re-roof your shed which had become rotted. I also chose the more expensive 15 year roof felt, rather than the 5 year less pricey option. Am sure the pigeons will ruin it all in just a few years, but it will be an improvement in the damage they've done.

What lovey photo of a beautiful garden.

30 Jul, 2018

Thank you Johnjoe.

30 Jul, 2018

I found the heat too much to do any real garden work, makes me feel tired just reading about all you've been doing, TT.

30 Jul, 2018

Well done TT,you have worked hard and your garden looks beautiful.Hope you manage to get the rest of your jobs done.Happy gardening.

30 Jul, 2018

Hi Green finger and Callie ...
Thanks for your kind words.
Today was rather windy, but I've made some progress with the recycled wooden fascias for the first shed.
Hoping to continue tomorrow.

30 Jul, 2018

Phew, I'm exhausted just reading your post!
Your roses look great: I agree it's been a good year for them. I really like the look of 'High Hopes'. It looks very healthy, - but I bet you're always on top of the spraying!

30 Jul, 2018

Hi Tt, my father used to say ''buy cheap, buy twice'' so having been brought up with that, whenever I buy anything, I try to buy the best I can afford, Derek.

30 Jul, 2018

What an interesting blog, Terra. And such a lovely garden with so many beautiful roses blooming. Mine have been disappointing due to the heat and dryness but yours are glorious.

31 Jul, 2018

Pb ... I'm still out there working ! One shed roof almost completed.. another whole shed still to repair .. and then they both need painting ! I don't spray High Hopes rose, but there are many sparrows around it all day, pecking the insects etc.

1 Aug, 2018

Derek .. let's hope we've made a good choice with our 15 year shed felt !

1 Aug, 2018

Thanks Arbuthnot .. that's a pity your roses have suffered so much from the hot sunshine.
This year, I have been surprised how well all my roses have flowered. I hope your roses do better next year.

1 Aug, 2018

I have so much admiration for you Terra ... lots of work going on there! Garden looks lovely ... :o)

Love reading your blog, Tt. Love the Rose High Hopes, such a beautiful shade of pink. Truffle & Neptune look well & so they should with such caring owners.Does the budgie get out into the garden too? My cousin & I used to take my auntie's parrot out into the garden, stand the cage on the grass & sprinkle water over him with a watering can. He loved it but then he never had a bath attached to his cage like you can buy nowadays. He lived to a great age. You amaze me doing all that shed repair work yourself.

1 Aug, 2018

Hi Tt, yes , I'm sure we have, and if it doesn't last 15 years, we've always got the guarantee o pay for the next lot😊😊😊, Derek.

1 Aug, 2018

Thanks Shirley... first shed roof completed yesterday ... onto the second shed now ..

Thank you Feverfew ... High Hopes is a very pretty rose ... I can imagine you showering your auntie's parrot out in the garden ! Sapphire the budgie has a plastic bath on her cage some days, but I don't take her cage outdoors.
I've just started work on the next shed roof ... dry weather forecast which is good for roofing work !

Derek .. when we take our felting receipts back to the store, we'll need to take the pigeons along too as evidence, .. or CCTV film of their destructive crimes...
😊 😊 😊

2 Aug, 2018

😊😊😊😊😊, Derek.

2 Aug, 2018

Oh Terra, I have just found this and feel so ashamed! You have been as busy as a beaver whilst I have been busy avoiding all hard work because of the heat.
I am so glad that it suits you and that you have achieved such a lot.
Can you come and live with me please?!!! You are a star.⭐️⭐️⭐️

5 Aug, 2018

Too hot to work in the daytime, but we have been up early painting the shed at 6am and shifting compost and planting at 9pm!

6 Aug, 2018

Thanks Wildrose ... I've enjoyed every day of the sunshine and heat, with my loving pets around me. Didn't want it to come to an end. Hard work but fun. Would love to live in Devon ... mmm ...

11 Aug, 2018

Oh dear me, have just found your blog, my you're like Wonderwoman, I have been exhausted in all this heat, have never felt so uncomfortable, your garden, as usual is looking beautiful, keep up the good work, I am sure the good weather will soon return TT,...

12 Aug, 2018

Thank you Dotty ... hoping for some more hot sunny days before winter arrives !

13 Aug, 2018

Oh yes please but without the humidity please!

15 Aug, 2018

That sounds perfect Dotty... today I've been doing lots of jet-washing, but it is very windy out there !
