A pleasant change from gardening.......Dartmouth and the Red Arrows.

Yesterday we went to Dartmouth Regatta mainly to see the Red Arrows. I have a weakness for them – I think it has something to do with those red suits!!
Anyway it was all very nautical and there was lots to see and do.
Before the Red Arrows arrived, there was a wonderful fly past from a Spitfire, a Hurricane and a Lancaster Bomber. What a sight and what a marvellous sound those engines made as the flew overhead. It was very moving.
There were only 7 Red Arrows because, as most of you will know, two pilots were tragically killed last year. They hope to be back to the full squad of 9 planes next year.
I have seen them many times but never tire of the wonderful displays that they give – as I said I think it has something to do with those red suits!!!
A few pics to try to capture the atmosphere…….
Suddenly, the sky was empty again. The planes disappeared as miraculously as they arrived and it was all over for another year.
Loved it!!

They are wonderful as is the battle of britain memorial flight, I was born after the war but it still brings the hair up on the back of my neck,,and a tear to my eye.
The pilot who died near Bournemouth lived in Rutland. And the paper published photos of the memorial just unveiled on the chines......it looks amazing
Thanks Wildrose its a lovely blog

What a lovely blog, and great photos, too. Lucky you! Aren't they wonderful?
We have only ever seen the Red Arrows once, and it was pretty memorable and totally unexpected. We were staying at Lake Garda, and were driving down the mountain road when they all very suddenly appeared, flying very low over the surface of the lake and then flew almost vertically upwards over our heads, performing the "starburst effect". Lots of other drivers stopped and got out to watch, blocking the road, but who cared? We got our very own personal display for about 10 minutes and we nearly burst with pride when we saw the red white and blue roundels, identifying them positively as Red Arrows and ended up jumping up and down and shouting to everyone around "Sono britannici!!! Sono britannici!!!! Sono i nostri!!!" (They're British, they're OURS!!") and everyone clapped and cheered (the Arrows, not us) I ended up crying, it was all so emotional. Not like me at all, of course ;o)

Oooooh Rose how lovely, they are our faves. too, we love them and your photos are great we also love air shows, I like the photos going through the rigging. The sight of the spitfire & lancaster is a great one, we must enjoy them while we can because they might not fly them much again and as for the arrows, terrific.

Oh lovely to see, we get them flying over us as their base is only a few miles up the road from us at Scampton. They are amazing, so clever and so fast and so close. They are impressive. We are lucky in Lincolnshire to have such a fantastic aerobatic display team. Glad you had a good day out Wildrose, thank your for a lovely blog.

I love watching the red arrows, around August Bank Holiday they come to Blackpool every year, but instead of going on the prom to watch them i just sit in my back garden and watch them in comfort

What a treat Clarice.....
We're not far from east midlands airport and remember Concord coming over, sounded different to normal planes....

Seems we all feel the same about them and burst with pride and admiration when we see them!
We used to watch them at RAF Chivenor where they landed before and after the display. That was great because you saw the planes and the pilots at very close quarters....as I said it must be something to do with the red suits.......!!

An amazing site aren't they. I work at Edinburgh Airport - and they are usually stationed here when in Scotland. So managed to get a good look at the planes on the ground. The ground staff were very nice, chatty and proud of their jobs and didn't mind us asking questions but we found that the pilots were a wee bit uppity!!
It's the uniform that does it every time - just like firefighters - the colour doesn't matter...LOL!
What a noise that Lancaster bomber makes - the whole place trembles as that flies past! When you see how those gunners used to sit to the rear of the plane - really makes you take head to how bad things must have been for those guys during the war.
Thanks for showing us your pictures.

Lovely blog, Wildrose! We have an air show here over the beach which I find irresistible. I love the Lancaster bomber and the Battle of Britain flight, which always brings a lump to the throat. But my absolute favourite is the Eurofighter, which has me jumping up and down! I also love the Tornados and the Vulcan. The noise, as if the atmosphere is being ripped apart, is just so exciting!
I shall now go and calm down with a cup of tea.

It seems to me that the men of the Royal Air Force have more effect on us than some of our gardening successes!!!
Cups of tea all round!

Right, what was you saying about the red suits , Chris! Lol. I love to watch them, but don't see them much over here and when they are here, I always seem to miss it! Typical me! Hahaa!

Brilliant blog and so good to see how many of us love and support our famous team, I have seen them many times but never tire of watching their displays.
I also get excited to see the Lancaster and Spitfire and have to say it does make one feel very proud but also emotional...

We saw the Red Arrows a couple of years ago when we were visiting relatives in Lincoln. They came accross the open countryside very low...you could almost touch them...fantastic to watch.
