LIFE AFTER THE LAVENDER!!

We had to take out our lavender path, it did not do at all well, not sure if it was the soil, the wet, or the variety…….so we pebbled it and set in some Tuscan paving, which looked alright , but not very inspiring!!
Well, we happened to be at our local GC the other week and they had some modern containers for sale, and they were less than half price, they were the right size and the right colour, so we had three……the only problem was, just what to put in them?……we went from Heucheras, too short, Agapanthus, too tall, bulbs too unreliable……grasses were an option? especially the Hakonechloa but then, we had quite a lot of that dotted around…….
For my birthday youngest daughter had given me a token which you could spend in numerous stores, and online (very useful) and B&Q was one of the stores, so off we went, and they had a lovely selection of very well grown plants……..and I fell for some conifers (much to OHs annoyance, he does not like them) they were the correct size, colour and price, in the trolley they went…
Popped back to our local GC and found some pretty black Violas and some variegated ivy, and OH planted them up (after drilling some holes in first) and I think they look fine, the conifers are Cupressus macrocarpa Wilma, and the Viola Venus Black, will add some dwarf bulbs for the spring…
Sorry it was rather a long drawn out blog, comments very welcome, complimentary and otherwise!!

very smart indeed Dotty.

Love them, they look fresh and green.

Thank you very much ladies, pleased you like the choice of planting, they should stand -15 but the Conifers do not like harsh winds, might have to fleece if it gets too cold.....

I think they look absolutely perfect Dotty!

I love these Dd...I used to have them lining my steps, lovely...I found they grew very quickly and needed a lot of water during the Summer, but they are gorgeous in those black pots...:>)

Compliments from me Dd, the pots are great and the planting looks grand, they really stand out....

Really striking Dotty! Love the containers, and inspired planting. Your wonderful garden just goes from strength to strength..\0/x

Shame about the Lavender, but those trees and pots are very smart. I believe those trees can be susceptible to bad weather, so as you say, you may have to protect them.

I'm loving those!!! I'm not a fan of lavander - so would rather see these any day. The contrast between the black and green really shows them off. Truly inspirational!!

They look great Dd...love the vivid green with the black, very stylish! I have a couple of the conifers, they are easy to shape if you decide to do that. I do love lavender too, and have been quite lucky with mine, I only have the English hardy types now though, also I have one in a metal tub, not sure how to keep it over winter though....:((

Well, I don't think you will get any complaints about that A . They look fab. Very bright, very smart, and very well planted. Your gravel sets them off beautifully. Only one word of caution from an experienced 'metal planter' enthusiast. The ones I bought rusted after a year or so. Sorry, but hey, you'll be fed up of them by then anyway! ;)

I really like this solution looks so stylish.

They're very nice. I like the shape and colour, and the way they contrast with the pebbles under them.
The conifers go well with them too :o)

I like those very much Angela ,very smart and a good all year round feature you can ring the changes with the plants surrounding the conifers whenever you feel the urge , Lavender is lovely but I have found they do soon become old and woody I think this idea is going to be more permanent and less work for you :o)

They look wonderful DD and less work and mess to contend with

Fab. Dd. love that lime green with the black of the containers, they look very smart and easier to look after too!

GM lime green is a favourite colour of mine, I tend to use it a great deal, Meadow yes that is a good description vivid green....
Sixpence it will cut down on all the trimming twice a year....
Amy we will plant other small trailing plants to ring the changes, but I wanted something evergreen and fairly fast growing.
Hywel and Drc thanks, I just wish OH liked conifers, I have always loved the different varieties.
Karen I dare say they will rust, might have to spray them, will cover them up in the worst of the weather.
Janey it is good to know you can shape them, when would be the best time to do this? regarding lavender we have lost so many bushes, have still got a few dotted around, but not sure any of them will make it through the winter.....
Scottish and Cinders thanks, I love to use dark pots with bright foliage it makes a change.
Sheila and Motty pleased you like them.
Lincs and Flori we were very lucky to be in the right place when they were selling the containers off, and they were just the right size too.
Thanks to everyone your comments are really appreciated........I think OH quite likes them now!!

Designer "par excellence" Dotty . . . still stunning every time I look! Which dwarf bulbs have you chosen for the Spring?
9 Nov, 2012
Yes I feel back pain now vanishing for you DD they also brighten that space up with the colour of the Firs.

A striking combination Dd, what are the pots made of? :-)
10 Nov, 2012
I had a Hidcot lavender hedge in the front garden and last year they just died. Couldn't work it out why but I dug them up and replaced with a few pieris. I have put some miniature lavenders in the troughs in the back garden. The colour of the pots goes really well with the conifers. Nice combination.

Sheila we will have a look tomorrow, not sure, usually know it when I see it....something the squirrels will leave alone!!
Thanks HB, absolute luck I can assure you, I wish the new water feature was going to be as easy!! no, we have not bought it yet, we have worked out where to put it, not decided on the shape etc.....
Sixpence I do hope so, not getting any younger lol
BA they are made of metal, they are frost proof.....but we shall see!!
Thanks Lindak, I love Hidcot Lavender, what a shame, I wonder why that was? hope you do better with your miniatures...
11 Nov, 2012
Thanks Dd, I wonder if it was all that rain that ruined the lavender?:-)
11 Nov, 2012
Possible BA, has ruined a lot of things this year....
12 Nov, 2012
I very much like the containers and the Lime green conifers too!!
12 Nov, 2012
Petal thanks, they are growing away nicely, (at the moment, fingers crossed)...
