A Garden For All Seasons

A lovely view of our Rheus from the Kitchen Window, it faces East, and while I’m waiting for the kettle for my first cuppa, I watch the sun dancing through the tree as it rises…Then there’s the Lawn…and nothing much else.
This is where we like to sit to escape the heat of our South facing back garden…and I’ve used this next pic as the centre piece around which we’ve constructed a new garden.
I spent all week looking out of the window, trying to formulate a design in my head that would give all year round pleasure…
First to mark out and cut the borders
All the Turf was saved and used to repair our back lawns and the sods went to the Chooks…
These photos will show how it all came together, and now gives us a proper front garden to sit and relax and enjoy.
The mixed planting consists of Shrubs – Perennials – Conifers – various Roses…both new and existing plants that we chose to start off our Garden for all Seasons…
A few tweaks here and there, and more additions to come…Will update as we go along…
We now have a new Garden that benefits from the Morning Sun, dappled shade, and comfortable in the afternoon…x
Just an update…have finished the front the other side of the wire Fence, all tidy now…We’ve added four Clematis, three on the Fence Weave…plants we had already, and one on the wire fence…Nice to sit and have something pleasant to look at :o))…..even the Lawn looks good too.

Thankyou I am thrilled you like it...It took a full day and a half of hard work between OH and myself...but probably like you all, once I get the bit between my teeth its go go go...:))))
When OH moved us here originally he had already prepared the ground for a massive planting of Shrubs and Plants from our previous garden...It was full to overflowing...As the main body of the garden started to take shape, this area became a Veg Plot... With so much to do, and so liitle time to do it in...we decided to Grass seed over this area, and at least make it tidy...and make less work !! (says she)
Steragram, I feel it for you, but burying those upside down turfs will greatly benefit you in the long run...hope to see your progress reports, as and when...
Cinders...I can't think of you without thinking Heucheras' I've planted 'Plum Pudding' with 'Berberis'..That spot looked dry, but underneath it was lovely to dig over, and good drainage too...
Nana d...I know only too well how hard we all work for our Gardens...and being a member of GOY and meeting up with so many *stars* has been a great pleasure for me...
Cristina...such a lovely Lady..I love to see what you're doing next :)) Ours is just three years old, and hopefully will mature to be as nice as everyones here...
Resi...I wanted to keep the Borders soft and rounded, to get a continuous flow..glad you like it...The Iris are outside of the Fence..another job to tackle.. Rheus is a lovely plant/tree...but it can drop seeds like mad, so you have be vigilant and get all the little suckers out...:)))
Scottish...you're very kind...it makes the hard work worthwhile to see such nice comments...
ps Sorry I cut the tops off the lovely Verbena..and the Sutter's Gold Rose, my photography again...

I agree, Sue...you've done a power of work there...well done!
Once all the shrubs get going, it's going to be a gorgeous, cool place to sit in the height of summer... :))
I'll be round for an aperitif, surrounded by heucheras and things which sound and smell good enough to eat! lol!! :))))))))

Good morning all...a lovely bright Sunny morning it is too..I need to correct myself I said I had planted Verbena, ..wrong...it is 'Veronica'...two tall clumps against the fence line...I think I was tired lol...or yet another Senior moment...
Thank you Paul...I love to look at your garden and all that you do, so interesting...
Thanks Pixi, you're a sweetheart, love our chats and bits of banter...:))) always remember your reflection in the mirror, in your 'jammies'
Karen...you will be most welcome, you can have the Wine tho...:))) hard work it was, but good to know I can do it...and I am amazed at what you have achieved in a year...:)))
Teds...Hi ..and thankyou...it is good to see things coming together at last...
Bloomer...I will try hard to sit and enjoy..I have my swing chair in this garden, and it is nice to sit in it and see something interesting now...
Hi Frybo...I don't like to stop now that i've got going, I spent a long time just looking on...so as much as the old body aches sometimes, I like to keep trying...Please feel free to use any ideas, I'm thrilled..ps I pinch ideas too...
Thanks Stroller...I know how hard all GOYers work in their gardens, and the sense of acheivement is so rewarding, I do hope I can still still long enough to enjoy...:)))
Hi Sticki...thanks too...I think it is related to the Sumach, tho to be honest I had to google it as I had not heard of it before...quite an interesting piece on the Sweet Sumach, and its roots for medicinal purposes...You wouldn't believe how much root pruning was done on ours, their roots seem to travel far...

Thought I'd give your garden a look too! What a lovely plot and you have put in some great plants too. I bet you can't wait for them to mature. I am jealous of your Rhus! Mine is only a baby compared to yours - beautiful :)

its looking great Sue! Will be lovely when the clematis grows along the fence..wont take long either! great addition! :)
7 Aug, 2011
Thanks Pix...I've ordered some Plants from a Nursery here in France...so some will go out in the front garden.
All the Clematis are previous good Flowerers so they will do well there...and one is in flower, not bad for a Plant that's not long been moved...only trimmed back the longest stems on all of them....Do enjoy the front garden now its like a different place....Not much chance to sit though, we've had quite a bit of rain...but at least it's bedding in everything...x

Great! I have fellow feeling for your hard work as I have been doing the same thing this week and have sore bits in unexpected places! I buried all my turf as I went along to avoid the problem of what to do with them, so for every one I removed a hole had to be dug underneath (first loosening the ground with a fork) , the turf placed in the hole grass side down and the hole filled in again. I've spread manure over it now and don't plan to plant it until its all settled and the turf rotted down. So while I'm waiting I can be jealous of you newly planted border, which I hope will give you a lot of pleasure. That rhus is beautiful!
