I got 36 free Lavenders this spring and have grown them on, mine were over 7 years old and a bit straggly so great excuse to dig them up and replant this year.
I have planted 26 of them in the front, but I was still not happy with the look.
Then I decided – its the yellow it does not work for me with the rest of the plants as most of the front is white, mauves-purple and pale pink perennials with a couple of pink sub shrubs and lots of green and white shrubs.
So out came the yellow perennials 7 in all (replanted in the back in the yellow bed) and it looks so much better.
Luckily all the spring and summer bulbs are the right colours no yellow.
I do hope this works, its going to seem a long winter till I can evaluate it.

I always find yellow difficult to get right in a flower garden unless they are grouped together then it works for me. I wonder if its me and ‘Yellow flowers’ or do others have the same problem with a colour in their garden?

I am off now to get some white narcissus to go with this new look or perhaps some more of those pale pink spring flowering Glads? I am not sure! choices dont you just love em.

I'm another that struggles with yellow flowers Drc, having said that I do love yellow foliage such as Escallonia and Choisya in my garden. Looking forward to seeing photos of your front garden next year.

Thanks Annella, I dont have the problem with yellow shrubs either, but they are not so in your face perhaps?

So glad it just isn`t me not liking yellow flowers, as you say Drc I think its so difficult to place them with other colours, my only concession to this is Coronilla `citrina` and I suspect this is because the flowers are such a pale lemon. Still each to her/his own.
Hope you get round to giving us a look at the new look, it sounds interesting.

Yes they dont blend in with other colours somehow and stand out making the affect disjointed. It will have to be next year Stroller before we can see the results.

I'm kind of in agreeance re the yellow too Drc. I have my yellows with deep pinks and oranges therefore don't stand out too much. It's a difficult colour to get right in the garden. I think the yellow foliage works better because at various times the tones/hints change depending on what the weather is like where as flowers tend to stay the same colour unless they are fading.
If I can recommend a white Daf - please try Thalia. These are gorgeous - multi headed, scented and last a long time. I'm not a fan of yellow daffs but white one I love!!! I've just planted some miniture whites called Tresambles.

Meant to add....can't wait to see your display next year :)

Thanks for the name Thalia Scottish. I have lotsm of yellow daffs in the back but dont want them in the front. White works well with yellow but as you say difficult to get it right.
Yes I find yellow green shrubs do change such as euonymus 'emerald n gold' as they have a pink tinge in winter. Also they they tend to be evergreen and are more welcome in the winter.

That sounds really attractive and I can picture in my mind how the yellow would spoil the effect, I must admit I do like yellow and orange, even more so this year with us suffering so many drab, dull days, its such a cheerful colour but my daughter who lives with us absolutely hates it, gor blimey does she moan in the springtime when all my daffs and allysum is in flower, lol...

I dont have any yellow in my front garden, I dont like it either D. I just cant live without sunflowers though, so have a blue and yellow bed in the back garden. Its such a shame that such alot of lovely woodland plants that like shade seem to have stronger varieties in yellow - like erythroniums which I love. I got some of those lavender plants too, mine are not ready to plant out yet though. I look forward to seeing yours next year.

Hi Lincslass and Poppy it is not that I dont like yellow I just find yellow overpowers other plants when among them. I have quite a few yellow perennial ones that I love but I am finding they are perhaps at their best in their own bed, ;like I have them in the back garden.
Oranges I do love, several of my lilies are orange but I dont find these so strident when mixed with other colours somehow.

I understand what you mean about the yellow flowers. In my garden everything is mixed up so it doesn't matter, but where there's a colour scheme, they would clash, and look out of place.
I hope you'll feel satisfied with your new plants next spring.

I hope I do too Hywel, but when is a gardener satisfied with their efforts!

Never lol :D

I love to see yellow daffodils in abundance in the spring but never seem to choose yellow flowers for the summer. I quite like yellow roses but they wouldn't be my first choice - this info is for anyone who intends to buy me a bunch!!!

I find yellow works well if surrounded with green, then run it into oranges, then reds which run into pinks, purples and blues. In fact - think of a rainbow! :o))

You would love the King Alfred and other yellow daffs in my back garden then Wildrose. I have a bed of orange roses though I like to receive any colour Lol
My yellow bed is surrounded by green shrubs Nariz perhaps thats why it works but I am inclined to think its because they flower in September when most others have gone over?

Hi Denise ...
Interesting blog to encourage thinking about colours in planting schemes :o)

Thanks Terra, it took me a long time to realise what it was that was not working and then more time to decide to bite the bullet! But since I moved the yellow the whole area seems
lifted!

Sometimes it can work the other way, and a colour scheme which you DIDN'T plan, looks really great !
