Venus Victrix

This little fuchsia is a delight.
I’ll tell you about it :-
In the early days of Fuchsia growing many hybrids were bred.
Venus Victrix was the very first one to appear with a white tube and sepals.
It was raised in 1840 and cost one Guinea to buy lol – expenxive !
All modern fuchsias with white tubes and sepals are believed to be descended from it.
Over time these early hybrids were lost, but Venus Victrix was found by chance in a collection and survived.
However it is still difficult to get even today.
I’m lucky to have found a place where they supply it, and bought it because I thought it had an interesting story.
The flowers are tiny and the growth a bit spindly, but it’s very pretty.
I hope you enjoyed reading about it.

I bet the plant cost you more than a guinea ;o)

I think it was £1.25 lol Not much more than a guinea.
I'm glad it wasn't the equivalent to a guinea in 1840 lol I would have left it there :o))
Glad you both enjoyed the story TT and Dido. Thanks for commenting

I've just bought this one, fell in love with it at homebase where they had loads for £14. I got a beaten up standard for £4. took a load of cuttings, so I'm laughing!
Like your new picture. Nice to see the face behind the name! sandy

£14 ? Was that just for one plant ? That's very dear :o(
I only gave £1.25 for this one.
Thanks for all comments.
Rachelsmum I'm sure the Fuchsia society will have heard if this one

An interesting story to go with a pretty fuchsia. Looking at your photo`s encouraged me to grow fuchsia`s for the first time this year. Have grown Annabel, Beacon Rosa, Phyllis, Snow cap, Tom west all in pots. Can I put them in the garden or shall I leave them in pots and take them in over the winter months, would be glad of your advice.

What a lovely fuchsia - very interesting to learn the story behind it. I have always been very attached to fuchsia's - my Mother's garden as a child was always full of them, oh and sweet peas! Thanks Hywel :o)

Thanks for all your comments :o) I'm glad everyone enjoyed the tale about Venus Victrix.
Stroller - Beacon Rosa, Phyllis and Snowcap are hardy so can be planted in the ground. Annabel deffinately not. Tom West I don't think is hardy.
It's up to you where you want to keep them. They all do well in pots but you have to find somewhere frost free to store them in the winter. Even with the hardy ones you have to make sure they are in a frost free place incase the soil in the pot freezes - that will kill them.
When you plant them in the ground try to put them rather deeper than they are in the pot. That will give some extra protection in frosty weather. Mulching with a thick layer of compost also helps, and covering them with an up-turned pot.
Hope this helps.

How interesting. A lovely, modest, attractive flower. Like Sewingkalla, I think I prefer these single ones to the summer wedding hat ones that have become so popular. I wish I had more space to grow more than the one hardy, modest one that sits on my patio.

I also preffer the small single ones.
Pitty you don't have room for a few more Kowhai
Thanks for commenting on my blog.

Interesting - I've just been given Delta Sarah which is really similar but perhaps has larger flowers and very floppy growth. I love the blue fuchsias and this one is claimed to be hardy.
7 Jul, 2010
Yes it is hardy. Mine came through last winter with only an upturned pot over it for protection.
Venus Victrix is much smaller than Delta's Sarah. The flowers are tiny and the leaves aswell - very tiny. It isn't hardy either.
Thanks for reading my blog. I'm pleased to hear you found it interesting :o)
