A Change From Mountains

We’re often walking in the mountains, but yesterday decided to have a change and head for the coast. After the manic tourist season and now school has started, everything’s gradually getting quieter so there’s a little more space for all.

The morning started with a beautiful sky promising a lovely day:

so off we went to the little port of Llanes in Asturias. This little town has recently had a ‘make-over’ and the harbour now looks spick and span and still blending beautifully against the backdrop of old casas.

We wandered around the town for a while, enjoying the Morning Glory covering an old wall, and well-behaved Bougainvilleau against the wall of a church with a magnificent porch and door.

It was getting close to lunchtime – Spanish lunchtime, that is! 2.30 pm! So we finally settled outside a restaurant in a lively street.

After a lunch of tasty fresh fish, vino tinto and a VERY strong small black coffee we decided to stroll a little more before heading for the beach:

This shady courtyard looked cool and inviting – if only there’d been somewhere to sit we’d be there still!

We drove out of town a short way to a beach with the delightful name of Poo. It was much nicer than it sounds! It’s almost a lagoon, quite shallow and with the sea sweeping in from the right with occasional thuds as it crashes against the rocks.

After a swim, and keeping an eye on those dodgy clouds floating over from the mountains, we lay on the beach drying off and were delighted with our two little companions – a pair of pretty Plovers dancing about at the waters’ edge.

A lovely restful day! Ah well! Back now to work harvesting our tomatoes, aubergines, corn cobs, onions and potatoes. Ho hum.

A nice change Nariz, are you close to the sea?
such a fantastic church porch and that bougainvilla against it, magnificent.
yes i bet the Picos were busy in august, lots of tourists wondering around your village too or is that too far off the beaten track?

Thanks for the lovely comments guys! Resi, Partner voluntarily helps our neighbour with the British website for renting her casas - he does the 'meet and greet', then hopes they enjoy their holiday without needing to involve him further. Sometimes we've had up to 40 tourists in the village .... which generally only has 5 permanent residents (us being two of them!). As long as the weather's good they all disappear during the day into the mountains or onto the beach - 1.15 hours away.
Tropicalbabe - I generally fail miserably at getting into cold sea water, but as this 'lagoon' was so shallow it felt warmer.
Glad you all enjoyed my 'tour.' :o)

I'm going to take several rambles through this scenery ...

Lovely walk around that town, Nariz! It looks like a lovely place to spend a day or two or ... LOL!

The Bougainvillea is really something! I've seen many pictures over the years but never one like yours!

There are courtyards, like the one you liked, also in Cuenca. They really are places that invite you to rest for a time - especially during the hot summer days!

November will soon be here & we will be off to Cuenca to meet our latest - but 1st Spanish - granddaughter! :-))

Hi Nariz ..
Wonderful set of photos.
Beautiful scenery and interesting to see the coastal areas and the unusual architecture. Good blog :o)

Thanks TT - I've always been enthralled by the architechture in this region as it really is Spanish. Sounds silly to say, being in Spain, but it is completely Spanish because the Moors - with their white walls and arches - didn't reach this part when they conquered the rest of Spain. I know there's a little influence from other ancient cultures, but mostly what you see is how the Spaniards want it. :o)
