ERYNGIUM [ Sea Holly ]

Lovely,Terra..These are some of my favourite type of plants..they really make a statement,don't they? and the Ceanothus is a great backdrop for it .:o)

...the combination kept catching my eye as I was mowing my lawns, so I stopped to take a photo :o)

First time I've grown a sea holly...
I was surprised how deep the blue is ... :o)

I haven't grown this either..just the Echinops..

The Sea Holly was purchased from a plant stall at a charity dog show... labelled as Eryngium planum...

I have 3 Ceanothus "Zanzibar" around my garden... all in different locations.. shaded, sunny, etc. and all survived the winter with only a small amount of leaf damage.

Does anyone know, please, whether the Sea Holly will self-seed ...
... and, if not, could I make plants more from cuttings ?

I'm painting fence panels today.. Just had a friend visit for a while to help me turn the large panel over... and the next door poultry were screaming and screeching the whole time he was here .... I feel sorry for those fowl... :o(

Makes two of us feeling sorry for them, i always say its not the animals that are bad its the people who own them, it been trying to rain here for last couple of hours and its now getting quite heavy, do my grass good where the soil out my pond as been, i love my pond now, so pleased i did it. Keep your chin up. xx

I also found another site which says propagation of Erygium planum can be by Division, Root cuttings, and Seed...

Yes it does self seed but very difficult to transplant as it has a very long taproot. Once you have got it it turns up all over the garden.

Hi Terra, sorry only just saw your question, best way to do cuttings is by root cutting, seed germination is hard as seed needs to be fresh to have a chance to grow, propagate like poppies a good piece of root in a pot the same way as it was growing in the ground..

They do self seed TT. I have had Erygium Planus in my rather rampant plot (see Corydalis Lutea) for a long time as a clump about 18 inches across. They overwinter as a low dome of leaves....the same as Helenium. I will put up a picture of Planus growing in my big Crinum pot for you. Not the first time it has had a go at this transfere, which is about 20 feet away. This time I didn't see it until it was about to flower. This year I have self seeded Bonariensis (rearranged) growing with Planus and Helenium Moorheim. The best combo of plants I have ever had....very long lasting, swaying misty blue/purple with Moorheim contrast.

Just been and taken a pic TT of 'the combo'. If you like a rampant busy herbaceous border look....this is the one for me. Unfortunately my Planus didn't like last winter too much. It hasn't got up as high and full as other years. I bought some bare roots in a Tesco pack and and one of them did really well. They might need some propping up too. I lost a good big clump in that drought and heatwave in 1976!!!!! Just going to put up the picture for you.

I have several Ceanothus "Zanzibar" in various aspects around my gardens... it seems to be more adaptable to shade/sun/exposure than expected. :o)

I've never grown these but they are a very striking plant, such a beautiful colour. Now I wonder if I can find a suitable spot.... :)

First time I have grown a sea holly, and I'm very pleased with it... yes, give it a try .... in the sun ...and not in one of your very damp areas.. Lol.

Lovely plant. I went to Renishaw gardens near to Chesterfield last week for the first time and their gardens are lovely and they had sea holly in the flowerbeds. Went on Wednesday as they are only open for a few days and the hall is open but not on Wednesday but we really enjoyed looking round the gardens.

I'd never considered growing sea holly in the past ... but I am really pleased with it :o)

When I first grew it ages ago, I complained at the garden centre that E. Planus wasn't the bright electric blue I had seen at a garden visit.....I was told if I waited a little longer it would go from green to blue.....and it did. I was told on GoY a while back that it has an unpleasant aroma at some point in the flowering cycle. One evening I thought Spooky Cat had made a comfort stop.....put my nose near E. Planus and it the plant having a comfort stop!!!!! You do learn on GoY.

Isn't that gorgeous? I'd love to try growing something like that. What conditions does it prefer? As long as it doesn't require a seaview............. I've never seen the plants for sale or growing here, so that's one for the shopping list next time we're back in the UK

My own experience is that this does much better in the ground than in a pot... possibly because the conditions required are "sun, in well-drained soils"...

However, mine needed lots of watering when first planted.

I have no exposure to the ceanothus but yes to the sea holly unfortunately. I would have thought that being spiky would deter them but no such luck. Other yards are more fortunate but the deer all seem to live in mine and so therefor everything is put out as an offering for them, lol!

The Eryngium or sea holly is still snuggled up with the Crinum in its big pot TT. Still can't understand how it got there but it must have self seeded. As they spread from a leafy base that stays on show close to the ground all winter, I guess, like heleniums, they probably split up quite easily.

My friend has some sea holly which has seeded all over the place, so that's probably how yours started growing in your pot.
