Potted Up!

Well, you were right in saying that I wouldn’t wait until after Christmas to get ‘the pot’ planted up!
Yes, it was cold out there – but it was sunny and we haven’t had any snow here, so off I went to the Garden Centre while helpful husband went to get some ericacious compost.
What did I get to plant in it?
I found enough white heather, and a Skimmia for the centre until the Pieris arrives in the New Year. That can go elsewhere, then. I also decided that some variegated ivy would soften the edges and keep within the gentle colour scheme I’d chosen.
Skimmia japonica ‘Thereza’
Erica carnea ‘’Snowcap’
Hedera helix ‘Variegata’
We all went out into the garden this afternoon to get on with the job – you can guess who was checking it out at every stage!
First problem – we’d planned to use reclaimed housebricks as pot feet – but the colour looked dreadful with the pot – so my husband, who is a hoarder, found two pale grey fire bricks – cut in half, they looked fine.
Second problem – the holes in the bottom of the pot were just where the ‘pot feet’ had to be – so more holes had to be drilled!
After we’d got the pot in place, we filled it with ericacious compost….all ready for the best bit!
And what’s that? The planting, of course!
The light was fading fast – it gets dark at just after 4 o’clock, afer all – so I took one last picture this afternoon.
And there it is – all potted up!

So do I, R'smum!! Thanks, all. I'm so glad I did it - an empty pot would have been a shame.
I have to decide what to do with the round one, now! That will have to wait until the spring, I think.

The pot and the plants look made for each other! You are very gifted, Spritz, to be able to put plants together like that - it looks lovely.

No, Dd - we did all that when it was empty - there's no shifting it now!
Yes, it was enjoyable - even though my nose and ears were blue afterwards. :-( (They matched the pot...lol)

Looks lovely Barbara, love your choice of pot :-) .
Husband asked me what I wanted for christmas, told him he'd already bought me 4 new daylilies, he'd forgotton, shouldn't have said anything should I, lol.

that is a really pretty planting arrangement. not surprised you couldnt wait to get it sorted.
shall i start a book on when spritz does the other one? I reckon before the mid of january!
20 Dec, 2009
Oh Sbg! How could you possibly imagine that I can't wait until later! LOL.
I'm pleased that you like 'pot 1' , though!
20 Dec, 2009
I'm with you Sbg, there's no chance of the pot staying empty any later than mid January and it will look equally as good as this one does.
I'm glad that Henry enjoyed supervising.
Well done Spritz, another triumph for the queen of gardening.

Lovely to think you can plant something that looks so tasteful and seasonal and doesn't mind the freeze up. That is what I call being a determined gardener. I was fleecing up at the very last moment on Wed afternoon. There were a couple of light snow showers, then it set in for the night here in Essex. I am so glad I got it done.

20 Dec, 2009
your pot looks lovely.... but you wont get me gardening in the winter....
20 Dec, 2009
Oh, come on, Holly! With a name like yours - you should definitely be outside in the winter! :-)))
20 Dec, 2009
That's a very attractive Skimmia - look forward to more pictures of this planting when the buds open in the spring.
20 Dec, 2009
Your pot looks lovely standing there - just the right spot for it. I'm like Hollyeves though, no gardening for me at the moment - too cold!
20 Dec, 2009
Isn't it great, Wagger - it's a new one on me - I thought it was 'Kew Green' but no. The label promises cream flowers. Yummy!
Thanks, K'smum. I simply can't stay indoors if there's even the possibility of half-an-hour outside - there are lots of jobs I can do out there, that's for sure. It's the wind that I don't like - if it's calm it's OK. :-)))
20 Dec, 2009
It looks smashing Spritz, I think the skimmia is just perfect for your new pot. :o)

I do like the white Erica and Ivy together. You've given me an idea now for a much smaller planter which I have. I'm going to do it in the spring. I hope you don't mind if I 'borrow' your colour scheme lol
I have some of those grey bricks stacked up here in my garage . They weather to a nice colour. - well I'm a hoarder aswell :o))
20 Dec, 2009
Of course I don't mind, Hywel! It's a real compliment. I hope you enjoy the combination - please take a photo for us to see. :-))
