Warm re-blooms
8 comments
A little heat can make a big difference in flowers, especially daylilies. I like to include a re-blooming habit as one of the reasons to keep a new seedling. Here are some examples from this year:
The first was taken on April 16th while the second is it today. The cross is (Black and White Delight x Julie’s Choice) x Gilded by Grace.
The first was taken on April 5th, the second is today. The cross is Etched Eyes x Dragonfly Tattoo
The first was May 16th, the second today. The cross is Full of Treasure x Blushed by Emerald
I made a provisional selection of seedlings to keep last month, but now I need to reassess and revise the list.

In the AHS journal every year, they list the top 3 daylilies as voted on by the people in each of the 17 regions, and there are a few, but not many duplicates in each of the areas. The ones you mention are older varieties, and I favor the newer ones. I am torn between 'Emozione' and 'Firefly Frenzy'. 'Emozione' has a strong gold color with a wide dark eye and an edge that looks like it was stitched on. It also passes these traits on very easily, and in my garden it re-blooms. 'Firefly Frenzy' is a wonderful yellow Unusual form DIP double that explodes off the scape. It is very 3 dimensional. There is a cross I made that I really like. After a hard, sunny day it continues to almost glow in the evening shade. All 3 do very well in my growing conditions. The 2 named ones are currently re-blooming inspite of not receiving extra water from me; and have an overall long season of blooming.

There is a page on daylilies in the Times today by Alice Bowe. Page 22, in the 'Outside' section of the Weekend addition. It lists the 9 top varieties. From H 'Whichford' , 'Pink Damask', 'Golden Chimes', 'Gentle Sheperd', 'Stella D'oro', 'Stafford', 'Bela Lugosi', 'Lemon Bells' and 'Crimson Pirate'. Which one is your favourite and why?
