December in the garden.

Well…was that a chilly night! Having put all the tender plants away in the greenhouse yesterday, we lit the paraffin heater (£2.00 from a local auction, a real good buy) and we awaited this coldest night of the year. This morning dawned a cloudless sky with a gaggle of geese flying southwards in the pale frosty air. A cup of tea in hand and wellies on I went to investigate if there had been any casualties in the garden during the night. Just the Artemisia and Arum Lily looked a little sad….everything else still raring to go!….:o)
Geese flying south in the frosty morning air.
In the garden though, Blackbirds busy hunting for breakfast.
My last Antirrhinum still looking okay…
The Winter Jasmine at it’s best in the cold air.
Just beginning to flower, this winter Kniphofia has become a firm favourite.
By the Jasmine, Clematis Wisley Cream is really coming into it’s own now.
And in the border below Hebe Louise…..flowering again!
A close-up of the beautiful vivid flower spikes.
I love this rich tapestry look of the dried Sedum flowers.
Pots of spring bulbs sheltering by the wall.
Lemon shades of this pretty Ivy, lighting up the window box.
Oh and there you are……..yes breakfast time now…..:o)

I like the Hebe Louise very much and will be looking out for that , it has gone on my wish list :o)
You captured the Geese flying over marvellously , well done ! what a wonderful sight to see in the morning :o)

Lovely blog Janey. It was - 6.5 here at 8.30am & I would think even colder through the night - no doubt we'll have lost a few things as cannot possibly cover everything in such a large garden. You must be very sheltered to have a lot of these plants still flowering?

Still lots of colour there Janey....that variegated ivy is lovely....If you put it in your pics I can add it to Variegated Plants Shrubs and Trees.......and if you "nominate" it I can pick it up from there..:))

Gorgeous blog!! :~))

Ladybirds don't mind being frozen they have a special antifreeze type liquid in their cell structure that stops damage occurring when they freeze basically it makes the water freeze in very very tiny droplets instead of making an ice cube, so when they thaw they dont burst their cells. This is a fact!

Lovely, lovely! Thanks. :-)))))
My C. 'Wisley Cream' blooms later - I get 'Freckles' first, then 'Lansdowne Gem', then Wisley Cream. Don't ask me why - no idea!
Thanks, Indy - glad to know about ladybirds. :-)

They do prefer not to be popsicles though, and will hibernate in suitable places.

yes roll on the springtime....... i love looking round the garden to see all the bulbs coming up.........
3 Dec, 2009
Aw that's a shame H..Witch.....what type of climate have you there?
Me too Holly!....:o)
3 Dec, 2009
Janey...surprisingly we have a fairly moderate climate being in the Gulf Stream! But this year the rains have been killers and striped most plants bare early! =^..^=
4 Dec, 2009
Just found you on the map Healerwitch.....I wasn't quite sure whereabouts Delaware was...ooh quite near the Atlantic..and like us you have had heavy rains. I'm lucky in that we're on the North East side of the U.K....it can be cold but dry. On the West side...this last few weeks have been dreadful rains and the worst floods in living memory. The area which is the Lake District has lost many of it's historical stone bridges, cutting people off from work and shops etc., a lot of history washed away......supposed to be climate change again....:o(
4 Dec, 2009
Yes Janey, it does seem like climate change!! but there are new reports that dispute that theory...some scientists believe now that it is just part of the climate cycles the earth goes through every so often! Are we to be the next dinasours?
=^..^=
4 Dec, 2009
Yes....we have heard this too HW...and it seems a more likely explanation.... I hope not HW....we'll just have to keep adapting....:o)

Its strange isn't it don't you think , that the rubbishing of the climate change dilema knowledge so hard come by to date should occur just before the major climate talks/convention in a few weeks time, strange also that america is becoming more isolationist again, strange also that the cost of doing the right thing will be sooo prohibitive in this time of recession and that we all need the impetus of free energy use to climb out of the hole the bankers have dug for the world and finally SOOOO strange that the largest growing economy an d the worlds largest buyer of oil second only to the usa (china) has no hope of conforming to limitations or indeed intent to do so and SOOOOOOOOstrange that the worlds major economies (usa, UK etc are now so seriously in hock to the chinese that if they withdrew their financial support our system would collapse literally overnight!!!
Don't buy the hype, we ARE the cause but WE (the western world) can now never be the cure, that is in the hands of the chinese and sorry folks but they DO NOT LIKE US! unable to beat us in an all out war they have controlled us now by undermining all our industries and means of production to control the world through financial means , our one true achilles heal !!

Thanks Balcony...like your new pic...:o)

I suppose its we reap what we sow Inde.....and during the industrial revolution when we pumped so much into the atmosphere, then taught so many other countries how to do it, it is coming back now triple-fold. I remember reading David Bellamys thoughts on this topic a few years ago now though and he really believed it was the earths natural cycle.....every few thousand years and the time was ripe again. It does stand to reason though...all the waste that we produce cannot carry on at the rate it has been doing.....advertising and packaging are king for the fat cats....this has to change.
5 Dec, 2009
Well,I could be your first customer!!!!
6 Dec, 2009
I'll go and tell them to get a move on Judz.......the lady is waiting...Lol!
6 Dec, 2009
Thanks Janey, sorry for my little info rant, I'm a little too serious at the min..
Good luck with the restaurant by the way
6 Dec, 2009
Thank you Inde for the info...it was really interesting and we need to be informed
the poor old Earth certainly takes some hammering from us. Did you see the program about the frozen baby Mammoth? She was 37,000 years old and yet lived less than a month, the scientists think that in Siberia it had more vegetation and was far more greener than now, climate change again......

A very well made & informative programme, Janey. I was watching it Saturday, on the BBC iPlayer.
