I lived for 20 years in an old cottage but there was rather a large front garden; and the big back garden was steep with many steps.

There were 2 potting sheds, a big storage shed, a summer house, a green house I built from perspex sheets, a garage, an enclosed walled area, 3 patios, 4 rockeries, aswell as the ‘real’ garden.
In the end it became too much for me to look after, so I decided to move.

Here is part of the garden where I had a lawn. The houses in the background are not mine.

I had a little seat on a small patio in front of the perspex greenhouse. My cacti enjoyed it in there during the summer months.

It was nice to sit there for a while to have a rest.

You can see how steep the place was from these photos.

I have brought the sun dial up here with me.
The rose is American Pillar.

I had a covered patio in front of a potting shed. I put trellises around it and I had plants climbing up them, and hanging baskets etc. It was a real suntrap there

Dorothy Perkin

Clematis Gipsy Queen

Japanese Anemone – they have been well behaved in all my gardens.

On this post you can see a Robin. There were lots of different birds in the garden. – unlike here.

Here is a baby one. I watched as his mother taught him to fly up and down the garden several times before he flew away.

My best friend was Fluffy. She came here with me when I moved. She was 22 yrs old.

She enjoyed playing on the lawn. I remember how she used to chase the string I had to tie things up with; and she would hide in the shrubs, and jump out at me :o)

She also liked to creep around and sit in the rockeries.

This is part of the front garden with me and Fluffy.

Across the road were woods with lovely walks. You can see part of it here, and a few flakes of snow :o(

Here is a watercolour painting I made of the old cottage.

It is now 4 years since I moved from there.

I still miss the crooked little house and the lovely garden. I created it from nothing, and I often wish I was still living there. They were happy years :o))

However I do believe we must move on when the time is right.

That garden looked so WARM and welcoming! I know exactly what you mean Hywel, I was 20 years in my last place too and still think back very fondly. I also agree that it's right to move on when the time comes. The bird issue is similar for me too! In my last garden i had many different ones, but here, being a new estate, we seem to have not so many. We do get a lot of greenfinches and they are lovely but boy do they make a mess...I'm going to be pulling thistle seedlings all summer! The watercolour is lovely...a lovely memory. Thanks for the blog!

lovely blog Hywel and a lovely garden......what a great age Fluffy was..... lovely painting of the cottage...

17 Feb, 2010

I hadn't seen this before, Hywel, so it was very interesting. It was a lovely garden and you obviously worked very hard to create it. Did you have to start your new garden from scratch too? It was good to see Fluffy too, what a great age she lived to. How lovely to have a talent for painting so that you could bring the cottage with you, it's lovely.

17 Feb, 2010

Thanks for all your comments :o))
Gee yes I started my present garden from scratch. There was nothing here at all. I will be puting a blog about it in the summer when I've done a bit more to it (hopefully lol)

What a lovely cottage garden you created Hywel your hard work shines through to reward you on every picture, cherish all your lovely memories of your time spent there with Fluffy and yes it happens to us all at some stage of our lives we know when its time to move on and a new book opens, thanks for sharing this special time with us.

While it must have been a heart-breaking wrench for you to leave that beautiful garden it would have been even worse for you to watch it deteriorate when you could no longer cope with it. You have lovely memories, lovely photographs and a lovely new garden - and some lovely views too! Nearly forgot the lovely Blodyn there, LOL.

17 Feb, 2010

That must have been very hard for you to leave such a lovely place. Love your watercolour of the cottage.

What a lovely garden you've created, Hywel! And Fluffy was very beautiful...nice memories...now you have one more garden (I don't want to say 'another') and Blodyn is so pretty and she is beside you!

Lovely blog Hywel,
I can sympathise cos I was a little sorry to leave our last house and garden to set up with my mother as well. Lovely memories of Fluffy too.

But hey we always do this when we move on dont we? Its nice to leave a good garden behind you. I guess you must have missed all those buildings/ outhouses etc!

I look forward to a blog from you in due course re the new garden! I hope you had some decent soil in the new garden!

Thanks to everyone for reading my blog and all the coments.

I must say I was really glad to leave the cottage because the garden was too big and steep for me to manage.
It was also on a busy main road with lots of lorries. It was a relief to get away from there.

However I'm glad I have heppy memories of it and sometimes I get a bit nostalgic lol (but only until I remember why I came from there )
:o)

I like to paint and draw as often as I can Neellan but I never seem to finish anytrhing lol

18 Feb, 2010

You had the perfect cottage garden Hywel, you must have worked so hard to get it as lovely as that, you must have the fondest memories of the garden despite the busy road. Your watercolour is lovely, I wish I could paint like that. :o)

18 Feb, 2010

Oh yes, Fluffy was a really beautiful cat, such a gorgeous colour. :o)

18 Feb, 2010

14 May, 2010

I had to leave - it was too big and too steep, and also on a busy road with lots of lorries. It had become rather unpleasant to live there so I moved.

I don't have more photos. I didn't have a camera in those days, only an old one I borrowed off my dad sometimes.

Fantastic blog Hywel and excellent pics. You had a stunning home & garden and always a shame to leave. Your Fluffy is like my Molly apart from Fluffy had a slightly darker face and lighter coat. Lovely looking cat!! RIP Fluffy

14 May, 2010

Thank you.
Yes Fluffy had a black face, and in the sun her coat looked quite ginger. She was 22 yrs old and very playful right up to the end. She's buried here in this garden.

14 May, 2010

Awww bless her. Become big part of family don't they!!

14 May, 2010

They certainly do :o)
