The shady spot

The shady spot

Im hoping the addition of the 'green slate' will keep a few slugs and snails away from my hostas! I think i shall add more slate ~ all around the plants!

Thank you Stevie, I'm pleased with the colours. Do you think it will be better to extend the slate into the flower bed?

13 Jul, 2012

What a lovely corner Sticki - I just love all those greens! The hostas are beautiful.

13 Jul, 2012

Looks lovely,Sticki...but don't be too complacent about slugs and snails and your slate..mine manage my gravel garden ,no problem..always find some under the rims of pots standing on it ! b......y little Commando's !

I think it looks wonderful - I wish my garden looked this good - everything in such lovely condition.

That is just lovely Stickie. Is it keeping them , what we won't mention..away!

16 Jul, 2012

Voldemorts, all of them!

16 Jul, 2012

thank you everyone, sorry for the delay in replying i have been visiting my mum in devon.

i love the hostas melchi but the snails love them too

i couldnt get the snail out pixi but he went of his own accord ~ eventually

i wouldnt dream of being complacent ever bloomer, im thinking of getting tweezers and a bucket of salt!!!!!!

gattina, its deliberately not a close up picture!!! they are lovely and green but they are quite holey!!

you are far too near the truth sheila

thanks linda, im trying!!!

rose, i have only just got back and its a bit wet to go and find out; maybe tomorrow, but i did sprinkle some very pretty little blue decorations around, especially for them!!!

good name melchi!!!

lovely area Sticki...

17 Jul, 2012

thank you SL, apparently its difficult for the mower [or the person ~ OH ~ who is pushing the mower] to go up the last bit of grass so i will have to extend the slate a little more.

17 Jul, 2012

Just as well you don't have snails like the ones in Hywels photos - even cactus spines don't deter the little blighters!

19 Jul, 2012

I think I get those too Julie!

20 Jul, 2012

How lovely! Reminded me immediately of Highgrove. No idea why...I know he has a lot of ferns and hostas there too though! Love it!

21 Jul, 2012

highgrove??? i dont think its very posh here karen, but thank you!!

21 Jul, 2012

:)

21 Jul, 2012

I think it is pretty enough, Sticki. Do not worry. Just put it all around the plant, not just from one side.

21 Jul, 2012

there is a bit more there now [than the photo is showing] but i have two more bags to put on yet!

thanks katarina

21 Jul, 2012

This area looks really good Sticki.

21 Jul, 2012

thanks linda, i have been out in the garden today [i expect most people have] but there is always more to do!!

21 Jul, 2012

Sticki...this is gorgeous. Very similar planting to what I am trying to achieve around my pond. I do hope it turns out like this. Smashing!
B&Q sell a greeny/blue alping grit similar colour to the slate chips. I've used it for around/under the hostas etc at the pond side. Blends in quite nice with the slate.
Reading your comments re tweezers and a bucket of salt. I use old kitchen tongs and a bucket of very salty water - it's great just dropping them in :))))))

21 Jul, 2012

oh, thank you scottish!! you are kind. some of this is by accident and some is just how it developed ~ no great plan!!!

the local GC sold the green slate, the others didnt have that colour

i was thinking some sort of tongs/tweezers, think it might be the only way, sunny today so less of the little swines!!!! but i did sprinkle some very tasty little blue treats around!

21 Jul, 2012

I've been using the blue stuff too (not viagra) :))) Now the flooding has subsided I can get some down on that side of the garden tomorrow night. There were lots of 'drowned' slugs lying around too!

21 Jul, 2012

there are empty snail shells here now! sad really but they had very nearly taken over!!!

[didnt know viagra was blue ~ definitely not giving that to slugs and snails!!!!!!!!!]

21 Jul, 2012

At the rate they are multiplying Sticki...who knows what they have had :))))))))

21 Jul, 2012

i dread to think

21 Jul, 2012

Very nice!

24 Jul, 2012

Oh, thank you Migra, the slate is now a bit further down the path and I have two more bags of it yet to put down, now that it's finally stopped raining there seems to be a lot to do!!

24 Jul, 2012

some of mine look like green lace HB!!
thank you, lots of green in this garden ~ including the moss!!!

16 Aug, 2012

At Highgrove I remember them telling me they feed the snails weetabix. Apparently they fill up on it and leave your Hostas alone!!
I also gave the birds the lefover (and slightly burnt corncob) One blew down and I found it covered in slugs!! They also love rose petals. So My idea was....to leave these things lying around for them to gorge on.
Your shady area looks lovely and tranquil Stickie.

This is very nice Sticki ,it looks so cool .......

17 Aug, 2012

oh its definitely cool ~ thanks amy! very little sun, luckily i am quite happy with green and leaves!!

17 Aug, 2012

Love your garden. It's finished for today, tomorrow will bring something new to fix. Did someone suggest a jam cap, or other cap that can hold some beer. The slugs love beer and fall into the caps. It does help. Place a couple all around your plants. They are so mean, eating our Hostas. The Deer and bugs eat mine. My Hosta shade "garden" is not nearly finished like yours!

18 Aug, 2012

i am not sure i will ever finish my garden, thanks wells

i shall try the beer traps

18 Aug, 2012

That's the nice things about gardens - there's always something to do - improvements, changes, developments, and if you don't like them, you can always try something else........

19 Aug, 2012

i agree gattina, i like it very much that its not permanent!! mistakes are hidden more easily that way!!!

19 Aug, 2012

A lovely shady area..

30 Aug, 2012

Thank you! Plenty of shade here, luckily I like green plants!!
